Chapter 2

Auteur: Lirael Seraph
Henry's POV

I couldn't help but want to shrink back when I recalled the conversation I had overheard earlier.

Queenie noticed my reaction, her expression instantly hardening. "Are you still holding a grudge against me, Henry? Why do you always look at me like that? You always ruin the mood whenever I try to patch things up with you!"

I didn't dare go against Queenie, so I merely lowered my head and asked, "Where's Mom?"

"Mom is away on a business trip and won't be back for another week. She told me to look after you. Do you want to go outside for a bit? You must be bored out of your mind after being stuck at home for months.

"It's been quite some time since the two of us went out together as well. I know I was the one at fault back then. So why don't you give me a chance to make it up to you, Henry?"

Queenie gently placed the robot action figure in my arms. Her eyes were filled with a sincerity that seemed almost overwhelming.

I was born premature, and Mom used to tell me how Queenie would come to the NICU every day after school to stay with me. In kindergarten, when I refused to eat, she was the only one who patiently fed me one spoonful at a time and carried me outside to play.

But after the fire, all of Queenie's affection was transferred to Nathan. I had watched her gently stroke his hair, spend hours playing ball with him in the yard, and drive him across town to watch the sunset. I saw it all from behind the curtains, spying at a happiness that didn't belong to me.

Seeing that I was wavering, Queenie pulled me into a gentle embrace. It was something I hadn't felt in over a decade.

"You're my only brother, Henry," she said. "Please grant me this request, alright?"

When she felt the infection under my bandages, she became furious. She immediately lashed out at my caregiver. "Is this how you take care of Henry? Get down on your knees and apologize to him! You're not leaving the Zeller residence until he forgives you!"

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I watched Queenie stand up for me. I ended up agreeing to her request, nodding almost instinctively.

Because of my extensive burns, I couldn't be in direct sunlight. Queenie wrapped me up in a blanket and carefully lifted me into the car.

Even though she had caused me so much pain and taken so much from me over the years, I still didn't hate her.

I even felt a strange sense of expectation. After all, it was the first time anyone had ever brought me out of the tiny room I'd been stuck in for over a decade.

That feeling lasted until the car pulled up to the hospital.

"Didn't you say you were taking me out to have fun, Queenie?" I asked hoarsely. My vocal cords had been damaged in the fire, so every time I spoke, I would feel a stabbing pain in my throat.

Queenie's voice took on an impatient edge as she replied, "We are going out, but Nathan is sick, so we're getting you tested for a donor match first.

"Don't be so selfish, Henry. You must have suffered a lot because of your burns, but Nathan is the true heir of the Zeller family. If you do this for him, the Zeller family will appreciate you even more. Do you understand?"

I widened my eyes in surprise. I couldn't help but wonder what could be considered not being selfish. I was obviously Mom and Dad's biological son, and the burns I suffered weren't my fault to begin with, yet I was the one being reprimanded here.

For the first time in my life, I told a lie and stood up against her. "Mom said I wasn't allowed to do it, Queenie…"

She snapped and bellowed, "Mom is just acting out of guilt toward you! She doesn't know better, but you should! It's really not that big of a deal! If you still hate me, come at me. Don't take it out on Nathan!"

I was held down and forced through the matching process. The results came out soon after, but Queenie was disappointed.

I wasn't a match.

I was aware that the odds of a match between people who weren't related by blood were slim to begin with. I couldn't help but ask, "Is Nathan really related to the Zellers? It seems like no one in the family is a match for him, Queenie."

Queenie slapped me hard across the face, nearly knocking me out of my wheelchair. She stared at me with bloodshot eyes, looking utterly incensed.

"How can you be so despicable, Henry? Do you actually enjoy this? Do you secretly hope that Nathan isn't really a Zeller so that you can keep exploiting everyone's guilt?"

Queenie finally received the parental affection and attention she had always longed for.Iris said, "Have some chicken noodle soup, Queenie. Your brother will be getting out of school soon, so go pick him up later."Queenie accepted the bowl, touched yet startled by the warmth, before a look of confusion swept over her. "Did you get it mixed up, Mom? Nathan is already in college. He doesn't need me to give him a lift anymore."Iris shot Queenie an annoyed look. "I'm talking about Henry. He's a senior in high school now, so all the studying has been hard on him. He needs some chicken noodle soup to nourish his body."Queenie's expression faltered slightly, unable to react for a long while. She finally replied softly, "Got it, Mom…"She absentmindedly took a si

Third-Person POVChristian merely said, "You can take the 300,000 dollars in this card and leave. You're not part of the Zeller family, so don't call me 'Dad.' Henry was my only son. You can consider this money as compensation for Henry knocking over the candle and causing the fire."Nathan exchanged a quick look with Queenie before noticing Henry's black-and-white portrait hanging on the wall. He broke down in tears as he instantly understood what was happening."Why are you doing this to me?" he asked. "I'm a victim in all this too. Henry is gone, but you still have me as your son. Do you really think only someone related by blood can be your child? "Henry is gone now, so I should stay by your side to repay you for raising me all these years. I don't want the money. I just want to stay with you, Mom, and Queenie."Nathan wept uncontrollably after saying that. He was smart enough to know that 280,000 dollars was nothing compared to an inheritance worth hundreds of times that amo

Third-Person POVIris just kept repeating herself like a broken record. "He's already dead.""I'll go check on Henry," Queenie said, only to be completely caught off guard when Iris frantically shoved her, sending her stumbling backward."Henry is dead! Did you not hear me? He ripped off his ventilator! H-He told me that he was in unbearable pain, begging me to let him go! He's dead! Henry is gone!" Iris collapsed to the floor, sobbing hysterically.Queenie's knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed. She turned to Christian and said, "Mom must have lost her mind, Dad. Can you tell me what actually happened? I can only trust what you say now."Christian remained silent for a long time before finally speaking up. "You were the one who brought home the paternity test when you were 17 and told us that Henry was switched at birth, right, Queenie?"Queenie froze for a while before answering, her voice trailing off with guilt. "I was the one who brought it. You took Nathan for a paternit

Henry's POVI was fighting through excruciating pain to reach up and pull off my ventilator by the time Mom and Dad rushed into my hospital room. I simply couldn't take it anymore. Life had become an unbearable burden, and dragging out my last breaths was worse than dying.Just as I managed to grab the ventilator tube, someone slapped my hand away.I raised my head and looked at Mom, tears streaming down both of our faces."How on earth did you end up like this, Henry? How bad does it hurt? What were you trying to do just now?" Mom stared in disbelief, her hands shaking violently. If she had arrived a moment later, she would have witnessed the precious child she went through premature labor and endless hardship to give birth to turn into a lifeless body.I looked toward Dad, who was standing behind Mom. Every single word he had said to me earlier hurt way worse than trying to breathe through the agony."It's going to be alright, Henry. I'll be right by your side. If you pulled t

Henry's POVI struggled to raise my head, desperate for Queenie to look at me. I wanted her to see what I had become—nothing more than a heap of mangled, rotten flesh.Queenie snapped, "You have no right to look at me like that, Henry! Nathan got crushed by a collapsing pillar because I saved you instead! Isn't that enough for you? Why is it always you? Why does everyone always end up drowning in guilt because of you?"I won't let Nathan end up like me, carrying the guilt of being the reason you were burned! I'm well aware that dying would've been far more merciful than that! Nathan has already paid the price for what he did! Mom and Dad are getting him a transfusion now. You'd better watch what you say later!"Before she could say anything more, the attending physician rushed in. "Nathan is in critical condition from blood loss, and our hospital blood bank is running empty! Please come with me right away for a blood transfusion!"Queenie followed the doctor and hurried away.Mom

Henry's POV"Dream on!" Queenie bellowed. "Nathan is the rightful heir of the Zeller family! If you hadn't been switched with him at birth, you wouldn't have lived such a privileged life, Henry!"I was enraged by what Queenie said. Tears brimmed in my eyes, and I yelled, "I wish I weren't your brother either! If we hadn't been switched at birth, I wouldn't be the one stuck in this wheelchair! I would've been cherished by my parents, someone who could run freely and live like everyone else!"Queenie's slap instantly silenced me. I was still glaring at her, even as blood trickled from the corner of my mouth, the fury in my gaze not diminishing the slightest.Queenie's hands trembled as a trace of regret flashed in her eyes. She then lowered her voice and said, "It's impossible to reason with an ungrateful brat like you. Just stay here and wait for the chauffeur to pick you up, Henry."With that, she bolted as if her life depended on it.Those in the hospital stared right at me. Th
