Chapter 4

Penulis: Lirael Seraph
Henry's POV

I struggled to raise my head, desperate for Queenie to look at me. I wanted her to see what I had become—nothing more than a heap of mangled, rotten flesh.

Queenie snapped, "You have no right to look at me like that, Henry! Nathan got crushed by a collapsing pillar because I saved you instead! Isn't that enough for you? Why is it always you? Why does everyone always end up drowning in guilt because of you?

"I won't let Nathan end up like me, carrying the guilt of being the reason you were burned! I'm well aware that dying would've been far more merciful than that! Nathan has already paid the price for what he did! Mom and Dad are getting him a transfusion now. You'd better watch what you say later!"

Before she could say anything more, the attending physician rushed in. "Nathan is in critical condition from blood loss, and our hospital blood bank is running empty! Please come with me right away for a blood transfusion!"

Queenie followed the doctor and hurried away.

Mom and Dad were waiting anxiously outside the OR. "What on earth happened, Queenie? How did Nathan end up so terribly injured?"

Mom collapsed into Dad's arms, overwhelmed with anxiety. "Why does this keep happening? Why is it always my kids getting caught in fires? Why is it always my kids who have to suffer?"

Queenie looked conflicted. She hesitated before finally saying, "Henry accidentally knocked over the candle while he was asleep, causing the fire to spread through the entire house. I went to rescue Henry first, and Nathan was injured when a burning pillar collapsed on him."

Mom and Dad fell silent, a sudden wave of regret washing over them.

"If we had just sent Henry away back then, Nathan wouldn't be suffering like this right now!" Mom exclaimed.

Dad chimed in, saying, "I told you back then that Henry shouldn't be living under our roof anymore, but you refused to listen. Who's to say he didn't do this out of spite to hurt Nathan?

Queenie told me straight out that Henry had it in for him and begged me to send him away. I was an idiot for being so soft-hearted!"

Queenie hesitated and couldn't bring herself to defend me. She just let Dad run wild with his assumptions, leaving him to jump to conclusions with the seeds of doubt she'd planted earlier.

A doctor rushed over, saying, "Mr. Zeller's blood type doesn't match the patient's. Mrs. Zeller, Ms. Zeller, please come with me so we can check your blood compatibility."

As Queenie and Mom hurried off after the doctor, Dad went over to my hospital room alone.

I looked up from the bed and saw him. After suffering from so many grievances, I had so many things I wanted to tell him, but I ended up bursting out in tears. "Dad—"

I was just about to express my grievances when Dad interrupted me coldly. "You have no right to call me Dad! I know Queenie treated you badly before, but she's lived with that guilt every single day and only ever dared to sneak into your room late at night just to check on you!

"You suffered through burns yourself, so you know how horrific that pain is. Why would you force Nathan to go through the same nightmare? If anything happens to Nathan, I swear I'll make you pay! You are to leave the Zeller family once this is over! We won't keep a bringer of bad luck under this roof!"

I watched Dad's figure slowly disappear from focus. I struggled to breathe even as the oxygen from the ventilator filled my lungs. I had lost most of my ability to sense pain, but I still trembled from the agony.

Dad returned to the OR waiting area. Queenie was still being tested for a match, while Mom stood there staring at a report.

"What's going on, Iris?" he asked. "Did something happen to Nathan?"

Mom turned around stiffly, tears streaming down her face before her mind could even process what was happening. "How could it be Type A? Why..."

She was baffled as to how both parents with type B blood could possibly have a child with type A blood.

Queenie finally received the parental affection and attention she had always longed for.Iris said, "Have some chicken noodle soup, Queenie. Your brother will be getting out of school soon, so go pick him up later."Queenie accepted the bowl, touched yet startled by the warmth, before a look of confusion swept over her. "Did you get it mixed up, Mom? Nathan is already in college. He doesn't need me to give him a lift anymore."Iris shot Queenie an annoyed look. "I'm talking about Henry. He's a senior in high school now, so all the studying has been hard on him. He needs some chicken noodle soup to nourish his body."Queenie's expression faltered slightly, unable to react for a long while. She finally replied softly, "Got it, Mom…"She absentmindedly took a si

Third-Person POVChristian merely said, "You can take the 300,000 dollars in this card and leave. You're not part of the Zeller family, so don't call me 'Dad.' Henry was my only son. You can consider this money as compensation for Henry knocking over the candle and causing the fire."Nathan exchanged a quick look with Queenie before noticing Henry's black-and-white portrait hanging on the wall. He broke down in tears as he instantly understood what was happening."Why are you doing this to me?" he asked. "I'm a victim in all this too. Henry is gone, but you still have me as your son. Do you really think only someone related by blood can be your child? "Henry is gone now, so I should stay by your side to repay you for raising me all these years. I don't want the money. I just want to stay with you, Mom, and Queenie."Nathan wept uncontrollably after saying that. He was smart enough to know that 280,000 dollars was nothing compared to an inheritance worth hundreds of times that amo

Third-Person POVIris just kept repeating herself like a broken record. "He's already dead.""I'll go check on Henry," Queenie said, only to be completely caught off guard when Iris frantically shoved her, sending her stumbling backward."Henry is dead! Did you not hear me? He ripped off his ventilator! H-He told me that he was in unbearable pain, begging me to let him go! He's dead! Henry is gone!" Iris collapsed to the floor, sobbing hysterically.Queenie's knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed. She turned to Christian and said, "Mom must have lost her mind, Dad. Can you tell me what actually happened? I can only trust what you say now."Christian remained silent for a long time before finally speaking up. "You were the one who brought home the paternity test when you were 17 and told us that Henry was switched at birth, right, Queenie?"Queenie froze for a while before answering, her voice trailing off with guilt. "I was the one who brought it. You took Nathan for a paternit

Henry's POVI was fighting through excruciating pain to reach up and pull off my ventilator by the time Mom and Dad rushed into my hospital room. I simply couldn't take it anymore. Life had become an unbearable burden, and dragging out my last breaths was worse than dying.Just as I managed to grab the ventilator tube, someone slapped my hand away.I raised my head and looked at Mom, tears streaming down both of our faces."How on earth did you end up like this, Henry? How bad does it hurt? What were you trying to do just now?" Mom stared in disbelief, her hands shaking violently. If she had arrived a moment later, she would have witnessed the precious child she went through premature labor and endless hardship to give birth to turn into a lifeless body.I looked toward Dad, who was standing behind Mom. Every single word he had said to me earlier hurt way worse than trying to breathe through the agony."It's going to be alright, Henry. I'll be right by your side. If you pulled t

Henry's POV"Dream on!" Queenie bellowed. "Nathan is the rightful heir of the Zeller family! If you hadn't been switched with him at birth, you wouldn't have lived such a privileged life, Henry!"I was enraged by what Queenie said. Tears brimmed in my eyes, and I yelled, "I wish I weren't your brother either! If we hadn't been switched at birth, I wouldn't be the one stuck in this wheelchair! I would've been cherished by my parents, someone who could run freely and live like everyone else!"Queenie's slap instantly silenced me. I was still glaring at her, even as blood trickled from the corner of my mouth, the fury in my gaze not diminishing the slightest.Queenie's hands trembled as a trace of regret flashed in her eyes. She then lowered her voice and said, "It's impossible to reason with an ungrateful brat like you. Just stay here and wait for the chauffeur to pick you up, Henry."With that, she bolted as if her life depended on it.Those in the hospital stared right at me. Th
