Chapter 3

Penulis: Lirael Seraph
Henry's POV

"Dream on!" Queenie bellowed. "Nathan is the rightful heir of the Zeller family! If you hadn't been switched with him at birth, you wouldn't have lived such a privileged life, Henry!"

I was enraged by what Queenie said. Tears brimmed in my eyes, and I yelled, "I wish I weren't your brother either! If we hadn't been switched at birth, I wouldn't be the one stuck in this wheelchair! I would've been cherished by my parents, someone who could run freely and live like everyone else!"

Queenie's slap instantly silenced me. I was still glaring at her, even as blood trickled from the corner of my mouth, the fury in my gaze not diminishing the slightest.

Queenie's hands trembled as a trace of regret flashed in her eyes. She then lowered her voice and said, "It's impossible to reason with an ungrateful brat like you. Just stay here and wait for the chauffeur to pick you up, Henry."

With that, she bolted as if her life depended on it.

Those in the hospital stared right at me. There was even a kid walking by who took one look at my face and started bawling.

"That man looks like a monster, Mommy! He's so scary!"

"How can someone look so hideous? Let's get out of here! I don't want to catch whatever's wrong with him!"

"Holy shit! I thought a ghost from a horror movie had shown up! I'm never coming back to this hospital again!"

I sat alone in the hospital lobby. I had no phone, and people avoided me completely. I stayed there from day until night. I cried until I fainted, but nobody came to pick me up. In the end, the nurse on duty felt sorry for me and called Mom.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the chauffeur scowled and grumbled under his breath. "Why hasn't this parasite left the Zeller family yet? He refuses to leave, and now I have to pick him up in the middle of the night."

If I weren't waiting for Mom and Dad to come back, I honestly would've preferred to just die and end it all. After all, everyone treated me like a useless burden who shouldn't exist.

I woke up in the middle of the night feeling something hot dripping on my face. I didn't wake up immediately since the burn had destroyed most of my facial nerves, so by the time I woke up, the candle wax had already cooled and hardened on my face.

A drunk Nathan stood over me, holding up the candle with a crazy look in his eyes. "You must be thrilled, aren't you, Henry? Do you think you can take back everything now that we're not a match?"

He suddenly thrust the candle toward my face, and I shrieked.

"Get that fire away from me! Get it away!"

Nathan laughed hysterically. "Queenie made it clear that I'm the only rightful heir of the Zeller family! You're nothing but a hideous monster! You'll never get your life back, Henry!"

He stumbled out of the room, not noticing that the candle wick had set the curtains on fire. Within seconds, the fire began to spread rapidly.

I was thrown right back to that night over ten years ago, screaming out into the dark with no one coming to my rescue.

I knew the pain of severe burns better than anyone. It felt as though millions of ants were biting me all over, and before long, my skin became a swollen, rotting mess covered in foul, purulent sores. I could still feel the phantom pain even after the wounds had healed.

I had considered ten thousand ways to die, and any of them was better than being burned alive.

Through the thick smoke, I saw someone running toward me. It was Queenie.

When I woke up, the air reeked of disinfectant. I was in a hospital room.

Queenie was pacing nervously in the room. She looked disheveled, her arm wrapped in a bandage.

I couldn't understand why it was Queenie again and why she kept doing this to me. She made it impossible to love her, impossible to hate her with all my heart, and impossible to ever escape her.

Queenie noticed that I was awake, and the genuine concern on her face made the whole thing feel completely surreal.

"Queenie…" I croaked

"When Mom and Dad show up," she began, "you'll say that you carelessly knocked the candle over yourself."

I clearly felt my breath choke in my throat when I heard what Queenie said. I was living through the exact same nightmare for the second time. I looked down at the ugly, scarred skin from my old burns, now burned raw and bleeding again by the fire.

I felt completely numb all over. After all, my pain receptors had already been killed off the last time around.

Third-Person POV"If I hadn't forced you to confess…" Queenie trailed off.It was too late for any of that, since the dead couldn't be brought back to life.Iris' attitude toward Queenie gradually changed after her return. Queenie finally received the parental affection and attention she had always longed for.Iris said, "Have some chicken noodle soup, Queenie. Your brother will be getting out of school soon, so go pick him up later."Queenie accepted the bowl, touched yet startled by the warmth, before a look of confusion swept over her. "Did you get it mixed up, Mom? Nathan is already in college. He doesn't need me to give him a lift anymore."Iris shot Queenie an annoyed look. "I'm talking about Henry. He's a senior in high school now, so all the studying has been hard on him. He needs some chicken noodle soup to nourish his body."Queenie's expression faltered slightly, unable to react for a long while. She finally replied softly, "Got it, Mom…"She absentmindedly took a si

Third-Person POVChristian merely said, "You can take the 300,000 dollars in this card and leave. You're not part of the Zeller family, so don't call me 'Dad.' Henry was my only son. You can consider this money as compensation for Henry knocking over the candle and causing the fire."Nathan exchanged a quick look with Queenie before noticing Henry's black-and-white portrait hanging on the wall. He broke down in tears as he instantly understood what was happening."Why are you doing this to me?" he asked. "I'm a victim in all this too. Henry is gone, but you still have me as your son. Do you really think only someone related by blood can be your child? "Henry is gone now, so I should stay by your side to repay you for raising me all these years. I don't want the money. I just want to stay with you, Mom, and Queenie."Nathan wept uncontrollably after saying that. He was smart enough to know that 280,000 dollars was nothing compared to an inheritance worth hundreds of times that amo

Third-Person POVIris just kept repeating herself like a broken record. "He's already dead.""I'll go check on Henry," Queenie said, only to be completely caught off guard when Iris frantically shoved her, sending her stumbling backward."Henry is dead! Did you not hear me? He ripped off his ventilator! H-He told me that he was in unbearable pain, begging me to let him go! He's dead! Henry is gone!" Iris collapsed to the floor, sobbing hysterically.Queenie's knees buckled, and she nearly collapsed. She turned to Christian and said, "Mom must have lost her mind, Dad. Can you tell me what actually happened? I can only trust what you say now."Christian remained silent for a long time before finally speaking up. "You were the one who brought home the paternity test when you were 17 and told us that Henry was switched at birth, right, Queenie?"Queenie froze for a while before answering, her voice trailing off with guilt. "I was the one who brought it. You took Nathan for a paternit

Henry's POVI was fighting through excruciating pain to reach up and pull off my ventilator by the time Mom and Dad rushed into my hospital room. I simply couldn't take it anymore. Life had become an unbearable burden, and dragging out my last breaths was worse than dying.Just as I managed to grab the ventilator tube, someone slapped my hand away.I raised my head and looked at Mom, tears streaming down both of our faces."How on earth did you end up like this, Henry? How bad does it hurt? What were you trying to do just now?" Mom stared in disbelief, her hands shaking violently. If she had arrived a moment later, she would have witnessed the precious child she went through premature labor and endless hardship to give birth to turn into a lifeless body.I looked toward Dad, who was standing behind Mom. Every single word he had said to me earlier hurt way worse than trying to breathe through the agony."It's going to be alright, Henry. I'll be right by your side. If you pulled t

Henry's POVI struggled to raise my head, desperate for Queenie to look at me. I wanted her to see what I had become—nothing more than a heap of mangled, rotten flesh.Queenie snapped, "You have no right to look at me like that, Henry! Nathan got crushed by a collapsing pillar because I saved you instead! Isn't that enough for you? Why is it always you? Why does everyone always end up drowning in guilt because of you?"I won't let Nathan end up like me, carrying the guilt of being the reason you were burned! I'm well aware that dying would've been far more merciful than that! Nathan has already paid the price for what he did! Mom and Dad are getting him a transfusion now. You'd better watch what you say later!"Before she could say anything more, the attending physician rushed in. "Nathan is in critical condition from blood loss, and our hospital blood bank is running empty! Please come with me right away for a blood transfusion!"Queenie followed the doctor and hurried away.Mom
