LOGINCHAPTER FIVE
RILEY’S POV
“Coming!” I called out, my voice sounded shaky even to my own ears.
I quickly dropped the pregnancy test on the bathroom sink like it had burned me. The two pink lines stared back at me accusingly.
My heart was hammering so hard I felt like I might throw up again. I couldn’t deal with this right now. Not with Logan waiting downstairs.
I splashed cold water on my face, took a deep breath, and forced myself to look normal in the mirror. My cheeks were pale and my eyes looked scared, but there was nothing I could do about it. I locked the bathroom door behind me and headed downstairs.
Logan was already sitting at the kitchen island when I walked in. He had made my favorite meal—grilled chicken Alfredo with garlic bread. The smell that usually made my mouth water but now, it turned my stomach violently.
He looked up at me with that familiar smile, but his eyes were intense. Again.
“There you are,” he said, pushing a plate toward me. “Sit down. I made extra just for you.”
I forced a smile and slid onto the high chair across from him. “Thanks, Lo. This looks really good.”
For the first few minutes, things felt almost normal. We talked about his practice, how the team was preparing for the next game, and how Coach was riding everyone hard.
I pushed the pasta around my plate, trying to take small bites even though the creamy smell was making me dizzy.
Then the questions started. “So…” Logan said casually, twirling pasta around his fork. “You’ve been spending a lot of time around the rink lately. Even after practice.”
I shrugged, keeping my eyes on my plate. “I like watching you guys play. You know that. Besides you also know I learn better balance from watching your stance on the ice.”
“Mhm.” He took a slow sip of his water, never taking his eyes off me. “And it has nothing to do with Jax?”
My fork froze halfway to my mouth. The nausea was already creeping up my throat, but I fought it down.
“Jax?” I laughed, but it sounded weak. “Why would you think that?”
Logan leaned forward slightly and lowered his voice. His tone sounded darker, almost deadly.
“Because I’ve seen the way he looks at you, Riley. And I’ve seen the way you look at him.” His eyes narrowed. “Don’t lie to me, little sister. Has something been going on between you two?”
My stomach twisted painfully. But I swallowed hard, trying to keep my voice steady.
“No, Logan. Nothing’s going on. He’s your best friend. He wouldn’t…I wouldn’t.”
He stared at me for a long moment, like he was trying to see straight through my lies. The air in the kitchen suddenly felt suffocating.
“I hope not,” he said quietly, his voice now carried a deadly edge. “Because if I find out that motherfucker touched you… I’ll kill him. And it’ll be a slow and painful death.”
He stood up and turned his back to me, walking over to the counter to fix his own plate. “You know I only want what’s best for you, right, Ri? I’ve always protected you. Always.”
I tried to respond, but another wave of nausea hit me hard. The room started to blur around the corner of my eyes. My fork slipped from my fingers, clattering against the plate. The smell of the Alfredo was suddenly unbearable.
“Logan…” I whispered weakly.
He kept talking, his back was still turned. “I mean it, Riley. Stay away from Jax. He’s not good for you. He’s got too much darkness in him. You deserve better than—”
“Logan…” I tried again, louder this time, but my voice came out slurred.
The kitchen lights were spinning. My body felt heavy, like I was sinking underwater. I gripped the edge of the island, trying to stay upright, but the world tilted violently.
“Logan…” I called out one last time.
I heard the sound of his plate dropping, then his footsteps rushing toward me.
“Riley? Riley!”
My vision went black as I felt myself falling from the high chair. Strong arms caught me right before I hit the floor, but it was too late. Everything faded away as Logan’s panicked voice shouted my name.
“Riley! Fuck— Riley, wake up!”
Then there was nothing.
CHAPTER SIXTY-THREELOGAN'S POVRenny had the cash waiting when I walked in, a duffel bag sitting on the workbench next to a half-disassembled engine."Fifty thousand dollars," he said, sliding it toward me. "That's all I could pull together this fast. The rest will take longer, if you still want it after tonight.""Fifty's not two hundred.""I know what fifty is, Logan. I also know what three days is. Take it or don't.""I need it.""Then take it." He crossed his arms. "You gonna tell me what this is actually about, or are we still doing the whole tight-lipped thing?""Still doing that.""Figured." He shook his head. "You look like hell, man. Whoever's got their hook in you, it's bad.""I'll manage.""Yeah, well. Managing and surviving aren't always the same thing." He gestured at the bag. "Count it if you want. It's all there.""I trust you.""You shouldn't trust anybody right now, from the sound of it." He said it half-joking, but part of the expression on his face stayed serious.
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWOSCARLETT'S POVPriya's studio smelled like latex and hairspray, tucked into the back of a warehouse space she rented cheaply because most of her neighbors didn't ask questions about the hours she kept."Sit," she said, gesturing to a chair angled under a ring light. "This is going to take a few hours, so get comfortable."I sat and she circled me once, studying my face like she was already breaking it down into pieces."Okay, talk me through the look again. You said you wanted someone older, rougher, and with brown eyes.""Yeah right. Mid-forties, maybe. Someone who's clearly done things she's not proud of.""I love that description, it’s very specific." She grabbed a bin of pre-molded pieces off a shelf. "I've got a few base shapes that'll work for the bone structure shift. We'll build the jawline out here and widen the nose bridge slightly, because that alone changes recognition more than people think.""Whatever gets the job done fastest.""The fastest and the mos
CHAPTER SIXTY-ONERILEY'S POVFour days. That's how long I had let his voicemail sit unanswered, I hovered my thumb over his name every time I opened my phone and never once pressing the call button.Last night, whileI was lying awake at three in the morning, I finally admitted the truth to myself. I wasn't waiting for him to explain anymore. I was tired of waiting, period. If he wasn't going to tell me the truth, I would go and find it myself.I opened my laptop at Maya's kitchen table and typed "Eli Ford marriage record" into a public records search site. I reached a few dead ends at first. But later on I found a filing reference number and a county name two states over. It didn’t have enough detail online to confirm anything solid so I needed to go in person. The county records office was smaller than I expected when I arrived. It had fluorescent lighting, a line of exactly two people ahead of me, and a clerk behind the counter who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else on ear
CHAPTER SIXTYSCARLETT'S POVLogan: I'm not wiring anything to a number I can't verify. If you want the money, we can meet in person. You name the place.I read it three times before it fully registered in my mind.In person? He wanted to actually see me, or whoever he thought was on the other end of this line, face to face.My stomach dropped straight through the floor of my apartment.I typed a response quickly. That’s not how this works. But I deleted it. I started typing again. I’ll take a wire transfer only.I ended up deleting that too. It sounded too weak and obviously dodging the request. If I refused outright, he'd start questioning whether the threat was even real, whether the whole thing had been a bluff he could just ignore. And I couldn't afford that. Not after everything I'd built with him, the trust, the dependency, all of it collapsing the second he decided I was disposable to him too.I needed to stay in control of this. I needed to not react to his terms and set my
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINELOGAN'S POVI called the bank first thing, sitting at the kitchen table with a legal pad in front of me, trying to do math I didn't have the stomach for."First National, this is Miranda, how can I help you today?""Hi, Miranda. I need to liquidate some investment accounts. Very quickly, if possible.""Sure, I can help with that. Can I get your account number?"I read it off, and she typed for a moment. "Okay, I've got you pulled up. It looks like you've got two mutual fund accounts and a brokerage account here. What's the timeline you're looking at?""As fast as humanly possible. Like, say within three days.""Three days." She paused. "Sheesh, that's going to be tight. The mutual funds have a standard settlement period, it’s usually two to three business days after we initiate the sale, and then another two to three days for the funds to actually clear into your checking account.""So that's more than three days total.""Realistically, yes. It’s even closer to five
CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHTJAX'S POVI woke up on my own couch the next morning, my neck had gone stiff, and I was still fully dressed from the night before.Mara was gone. A note sat folded on the coffee table where she must have left it before letting herself out.I didn't want to wake you. We'll talk soon about Elias, I mean the arrangements and all of it. Take care of yourself. -MI sat there staring at it for longer than I probably should have, the aching in my ribs was nothing compared to the ache sitting deeper in my chest.I was still trying to process that I had a son, that he existed, and that he had been asking about me for years while I had no idea any of it was happening. “Elias.” I said the name out loud once, quietly, just to hear how it sounded coming from me.I didn't have too much time to sit with it properly. Practice was meant to start in two hours, and the assistant coach's cover story only bought me so much runway. The rink was already rowdy with the usual pre-practice
