CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE

LOGAN'S POV

My phone buzzed while I was standing in the kitchen with Carol Bennett's card in my hand.

It was Cole, or at least the number Gabriel's men used. No words this time. Just an address and one line under it.

St. Anne's Hospital. She was found on the pier.

I read it twice. Then I grabbed my keys and ran.

I don't remember the drive. I remember the red lights I went through and the parking garage I left the truck in with the door open. I remember the ER doors sliding

CHAPTER ONE HUNDREDRILEY'S POVBrandt had talked all the way down the corridor. I had listened to every word."Is Dr. Morrow new?" I had asked in the lost voice."Oh, no. She's been with the clinic from the beginning.""The beginning of what?""Of the clinic, dear."Now the cold was the first thing. Then the lamp, and the smell of lilies so thick it coated my tongue. The room was small and spotless. A steel table, a screen on a stand, a counter along the far wall with a white cooler on it. A woman stood at the counter with her back to the door, laying out instruments in a row. She wore lavender gloves and a surgical cap, and she was humming.Three notes. Then the same three notes. My hands went cold on the blue blanket. I did not move them."Dr. Morrow," Brandt said, "this is Miss Kane."The woman turned. She was about fifty-five, with gray eyes above her mask and a face that had never needed to rai

CHAPTER NINETY-NINERILEY'S POVI counted before I opened my eyes. Two cameras, one in each top corner. A monitor beeping on my left. A window.A real window. I opened my eyes and looked at it. Pale green walls, a ceiling without stains, and past the glass a service road with a concrete wall rising behind it. The curve of the arena roof showed above the wall. I knew that roof. I had skated under it twice. So this was Eastbridge ground. Of course it was."Good, you're awake," a voice said. "I'm Nurse Brandt. Don't try to sit up fast."She was small and gray-haired, with a clipboard held flat against her chest. She wrapped the cuff around my arm."One fifteen over seventy-two. Very nice. Dr. Hale has already looked at your labs.""Where am I?""A private clinic. You were moved for the babies' sake."I opened my mouth to say the lost thing. Where's Logan, who are you, what day is it. Then I stopped. Tasha's eyes had

CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHTJAX'S POVThe two men in medical jackets did not touch me. They did not have to. One stood on each side of the doorway with his arms crossed, and every time I shifted my weight, they shifted theirs.I listened to the gurney wheels go down the hall. The first door beeped. The second door beeped. Then nothing.Tasha appeared in the corridor with her hand over her mouth. "Mr. Harlan, I'm so sorry. Where did they take her?""I don't know yet.""You can go now, sir," the taller one said."Now?""The ambulance has left the bay."They stepped aside. I stood there with my hands open at my sides, because if I closed them I would hit somebody, and Riley had told me to find Carol first.Dr. Whitfield was holding the folder with both hands. His face was gray."Mr. Harlan, I want you to know I did not sign this willingly.""I know.""The form lists the receiving facility. Eastbridge Wo

CHAPTER NINETY-SEVENRILEY'S POVI woke before dawn with my hand on my stomach and the word "two" in my head. Three days to the final. The hallway light made its yellow line under the door. Someone had pulled the blue blanket up to my chin while I slept. I had not done it. I lay still and checked everything. The blanket, my pillow, my fingers. Under my right hand there was a dent in the sheet where paper had been.Paper. I sat up and looked under the pillow and under the mattress. Nothing. At seven Tasha came in with the blood pressure cuff."One ten over seventy. You talked in your sleep again.""What did I say?""Names. Mostly 'Jax.'" She smiled. "Your friend is on the list for eight. He asked me twice last night if he could stay. I told him rules are rules.""He stayed late?""Until we locked the log. He was in that chair most of the evening."I did not remember it. I had slept hard. That alone bothered

CHAPTER NINETY-SIXLOGAN'S POVBishop gave directions one turn at a time. "Left." "Right at the light." "Stay in this lane." He said nothing else, and the gun never moved from my ribs.I kept my hands at ten and two and counted the turns. Eleven so far. We were heading toward the river."Where are we going?" I asked."You'll know when we get there.""Is Gabriel there?""Eyes on the road, Kane.""You're going to shoot me in my own truck?""If I wanted to shoot you, I'd have done it in the garage. Drive."Riley's rule was still in my head. Wait for them to say the word twins. Don't say it first. They had said it. Gabriel knew before I did, and Whitfield only told me this afternoon. Someone in St. Anne's had picked up a phone before the ink on that printout was dry. And I could not tell Riley or Jax about this ride. I knew that before anyone said it."Right," Bishop said.I turned into the shipping yard at Pier 9. Same gravel, same orange light over the fence. Last week I ran in here hol

CHAPTER NINETY-FIVELOGAN'S POV"Kane! Eyes up!"The puck hit my shin guard and slid away. I had not seen it coming. Coach blew his whistle and pointed at me."Where is your head today?""Here, Coach.""Then bring it onto the ice."I skated back to the line. Four days to the final. At the far end Jax was running the power play with Derek and two others, and he had not looked at me once since warm-ups. He didn't need to. Every pass he made had an edge on it.Derek glided up beside me. "You good, man?""I'm fine.""You've been fine for a week. It's scary.""Run your drill, Derek."He left. A rink staffer in a gray vest was waving at the boards near our bench."Logan Kane? The front desk got a call for you. A doctor's office. They said it's about your sister and you need to come in person.""They called the rink?""Your phone went straight to voicemail, they said."Of course it did. My phone was locked in my truck, in the glove box, the same as Jax's. That was the rule now. It was the onl
