Chapter 1

Today was the day my mother-in-law, Fiona Lopez, was discharged from the hospital.

To take care of her, I'd bitten the bullet and turned down a major contract—one that could have saved my struggling company. For ten full days, I'd personally waited on her hand and foot at the hospital.

Emptying bedpans, bathing her, giving her massages—I'd done it all, and I could honestly say I'd cared for her better than most sons would care for their own mothers.

Once the discharge paperwork was done, I helped Fiona out of her room, and a crowd of relatives immediately gathered around us.

"Oh, look at him!" one of them gushed. "Howard really is the model son-in-law of the Lawson family!"

"You can say that again," another chimed in. "These days, you can't even count on your own son to do half as much."

Their genuine praise brought me some comfort, making those ten grueling days feel completely worthwhile.

However, what Fiona said next felt like a bucket of ice water dumped over my head, chilling me to the bone.

Right in front of everyone, she shook off my hand, her face darkening. "Model son-in-law? Please! It's all an act. He's just putting on a show for everyone!"

In an instant, the whole place went dead silent.

My smile froze.

Yet Fiona wasn't about to stop there. She dragged over her own son, Kyle Lawson, who had been standing off to the side, glued to his phone the whole time.

Beaming with pride, she paraded him in front of the relatives. "When it comes to devotion, nobody beats my son, Kyle. He's busy with work and can't visit every day, but he calls me daily and sends me a GIF to check in. That's what it means to be a devoted son, always keeping his mom in his heart."

Her words left the relatives looking painfully awkward. One of them forced a laugh and tried to smooth things over. "Come on, Fiona, that's not fair. Howard spent the last ten days—"

"So what if it was ten days?" Fiona cut him off sharply. "He's just got too much time on his hands—running some two-bit company and being bored out of his mind. Not like my son.

"Kyle has a million things to deal with every day. Now that's a man who's actually doing something with his life. Besides, Howard only came to the hospital to look good for Jenna!"

I stared at her spiteful face, a sudden wave of anger flaring inside me.

My wife, Jenna Lawson, was flustered and furious. She yanked on Fiona's arm. "Mom! How could you say that about Howard? He turned down his company's most important contract just to take care of you!"

"Shut your mouth!" Fiona barked as she backhanded Jenna. "You little traitor! You're actually taking his side over your own mother? What did he do, put a spell on you? You've completely lost your mind!"

Jenna's eyes instantly reddened, welling up with tears of frustration.

As I watched my wife get humiliated like that, the last trace of warmth inside me died out.

For years, I'd groveled like a dog to win Fiona over, only to be met with escalating contempt and humiliation. What had I even been trying to achieve?

I took a deep breath, forcing the rage back down. Instead of exploding, I offered a calm smile.

With everyone watching, I slowly set down everything I was carrying, one item at a time—the bags, the thermos, the health supplements.

Fiona gaped at me in shock before snapping, "Howard Sherman! What do you think you're doing? You're just going to drop everything and walk away?"

I straightened up and looked her in the eye. My voice was softer than it had ever been. "Fiona, what you said was a real eye-opener. You're right. I've been going about this all wrong. Everything I did was just empty gestures."

I paused, my gaze sweeping past Kyle's smug expression, and continued. "Starting today, I'm going to follow Kyle's lead. I'll keep all my devotion in my heart."

With that, I turned and walked away without sparing anyone there another glance.

Behind me, Fiona shrieked and cursed in a frenzy of rage, but I tuned her out completely.

She wanted me to learn from Kyle?

Fine. I'd grant her wish and do it well enough to beat him at his own game.

In the end, my heart softened. When I looked into Jenna's eyes, full of hope and remorse, I couldn't bring myself to be completely heartless. I'd fought back to teach them a lesson and save myself, not to destroy anyone.I'd accomplished what I set out to do.Right in front of Jenna, I pulled up the crowdfunding link and shut down the campaign. Then, I called the used-car dealer and canceled the sale of my car.As Jenna stared at me in shock, I said calmly, "We don't need to sell the house or the car. I'll find the money."Without a moment's hesitation, I drew from my company's reserve funds and paid for Fiona's lifesaving surgery. The operation was a success.…A week later, Fiona was moved out of the ICU and into a regular room. When I went to visit her, Jenna was sitting by the bedside, feeding her oatmeal one spoonful at a time. Fiona's hair had turned noticeably grayer, and she looked completely drained of life, as if she'd aged a decade overnight.Kyle and Megan hadn't

As the alarm blared, doctors and nurses swarmed into the ICU, and the room instantly erupted into chaos.Meanwhile, out in the hallway, Kyle and Megan's fight was coming to an end."I'm done! I can't live like this anymore! I want a divorce!" Megan screamed at the top of her lungs one last time. With bloodshot eyes, she shoved a relative out of her way and stormed off toward the elevators without looking back.Kyle slumped on the floor like a marionette with its strings cut. Five distinct finger marks stood out clearly on his face, and his eyes were completely blank. Not a shred of his usual swagger remained. The truth had come to light, and everyone had turned their backs on him.The relatives he'd once used as pawns to guilt-trip me now looked at him like a pile of trash they couldn't get away from fast enough. They practically tripped over themselves trying to leave, mumbling lame excuses like "I left the stove on" and "I have to pick up my grandson from school."In the blink

A nurse taped the staggering bill for Fiona's surgery to the ICU window with icy indifference. It might as well have been a death sentence.300 thousand dollars. The number was printed in bright red, so glaring it hurt to look at.Outside the ICU, the air felt as stifling as a tomb. The relatives had stopped whispering among themselves. Instead, they kept sizing Kyle up with looks that mixed pity, scrutiny, and glee at his misfortune. Their stares pierced him like countless invisible needles, riddling him with holes.Arms crossed, I leaned quietly against a wall some distance away and, like an artist admiring his own masterpiece. I watched coldly as the farce reached its climax. The seconds ticked by. Each one that passed in silence was another brutal hammer blow to Kyle's pride, which was already buckling under the strain. Finally, a stone-faced doctor came out, clipboard in hand. "Fiona Lopez's family? Have you gotten the money together for the surgery yet? I need to remind you

Kyle was drowning in his relatives' accusations, reduced to a whipped dog with no fight left in him.Still, selling my car would take time, and the shortfall for the surgery fee remained. Outside the ICU, the angry accusations slowly died down, and a deathly, despairing silence fell over everyone once again.Just then, I noticed Fiona in a corner of the hallway. With nowhere left to turn, she dialed a number with trembling hands. She pressed the phone tight against her ear. Her usual pride was completely gone, and her voice was so weak it was barely above a whisper."Hello? Is this Tina?"The woman on the other end had to be Jenna's aunt, Tina Lopez—someone I'd only heard about but never met.A shrill, crystal-clear voice blasted through the phone, dripping with open mockery. "Well, well, if it isn't my high-and-mighty big sister! What a rare treat. What made you think of calling me? Did hell freeze over?""Tina, I-I can't hold out much longer," Fiona pleaded. "I urgently need mo

At the hospital, the 300 thousand dollars needed for Fiona's surgery weighed heavily on everyone in the stark white hallway. The staggering cost left them feeling suffocated. On the crowdfunding page, the total sat at a pitiful ten thousand two hundred dollars—a cruel mockery of Kyle's so-called status as the Lawson family's "rock".The seconds ticked by. Inside the ICU, Fiona lay surrounded by monitoring equipment, her expression tight with anxiety and fear. The line on her heart monitor spiked wildly as if possessed. Watching it was enough to make anyone's pulse race. Finally, Jenna started calling me nonstop, in tears."Honey… I'm begging you… Please stop fighting with Kyle," she pleaded, her voice hoarse and desperate. "Mom… my mom really might not make it… The doctor said if we can't come up with the money, all we can do is… start planning her funeral…""Okay. I'll be right there," I agreed without a moment's hesitation, lacing my voice with just the right balance of panic an

After I tagged Kyle in the family group chat, I figured he was ready to skin me alive.I'd put him on trial and tied him firmly to the stake. Every pair of eyes in the "One Big Happy Family" chat was another log thrown onto the fire, piling up until the flames were roaring and he was practically roasting in his own juices. If he donated too little, he'd never be able to show his face around the family again. His mom was critically ill, so if he—the dutiful son and big-shot boss his mom was always bragging about—refused to part with a dime, his name would be dragged through the mud forever once word got out.And if he donated a lot…Who was he kidding? He was all show, keeping up appearances by dipping into his clients' advance payments and wringing money out of me. Did he even have that kind of cash?I wanted him ruined.I wanted him to get a taste of what it felt like to be publicly humiliated.Time ticked by, minute by minute. In the chat, the relatives who had only tagged hi
