Chapter 2

Author: To The North
I'd barely walked out on Fiona and stepped outside the inpatient building when a doctor in a white coat caught up to me and tapped me on the shoulder.

"Mr. Sherman, hold on a second! Fiona's hospital bill hasn't been settled yet. There's still an unpaid balance of over ten thousand dollars—"

I stopped, turned around, and flashed him a picture-perfect smile. "Don't worry about it, Doc."

I pointed back up at the building and said breezily, "Her son, Kyle, will be down to settle it."

The doctor just stared at me, completely lost. I gave him a courteous nod, turned on my heel, and walked away.

…

The sun overhead was blinding, yet I felt cold all over.

Memories I'd deliberately buried came surging back, flooding my mind like water bursting from a dam.

Last year, Kyle went all out for Fiona's 60th birthday by booking a banquet at the city's most expensive five-star hotel. All through dinner, he laid the sweet talk on thick. It took him only a few flattering words to put Fiona over the moon, and she praised him to the skies in front of every relative present.

However, when the bill arrived, Kyle slapped his forehead and made a big show of blaming himself. "Aw, man! My wife keeps all my cards, and I left in such a rush today that I forgot to grab them!"

At that, Fiona didn't hesitate for a second. She turned straight to me and said, "Howard, go cover it for now. It's only 50 thousand dollars. Don't put Kyle on the spot."

It didn't sit right with me at the time, but Jenna gave me a pleading look, so I swiped my card anyway.

At that dinner, Kyle and his family basked in the glory and soaked up every compliment.

And me? I was just the sucker who picked up the tab.

Then, there was the time Kyle bought a new car and bragged about it nonstop in the family group chat. Just a few days later, Fiona rushed to Jenna in a total panic, claiming there was a family emergency and that she needed 100 thousand dollars to tide them over.

Jenna had always been a soft touch. Without even asking me, she transferred Fiona the money we had set aside for investments.

And guess what?

I happened to be scrolling through Kyle's social media feed when I spotted a screenshot of a 50-thousand-dollar transfer, with Fiona listed as the recipient. The caption read, "Here's a little something for you, Mom! Spend it on whatever you want!"

The very next post was a photo of Kyle's wife, Megan Lowe, smiling sweetly with a brand-new designer purse worth 50 thousand dollars slung over her shoulder.

So, that was the "family emergency." They had used our money to buy Kyle a reputation as the dutiful son and his wife a designer handbag.

As I thought back on everything, I felt my heart turn cold and hard, like a stone submerged in ice water.

Right at the worst possible moment, my phone rang. "Kyle" was flashing across the screen.

I swiped to answer. Kyle's voice came through immediately, annoyed and demanding, as if he had every right to call me to account. "Howard, where the hell did you run off to? My mother's getting discharged, and you're not even here?"

On the other end of the line, his voice mingled with Megan's, while Fiona grumbled in the background.

I pulled the phone away from my ear and said flatly, "Something urgent came up at work. I just left."

"Something urgent? What could possibly be more important than my mom getting out of the hospital?" Kyle said, his tone thick with smug self-righteousness. "Whatever. Just hurry back and drive her home."

I let out a mocking laugh and asked, "Kyle, if your mom getting discharged is such a huge deal, shouldn't you, her devoted son, be the one who's there?"

My words silenced him for a second.

Without waiting for him to react, I added, "I really can't get away right now, so you and Megan go ahead and take her home. Oh, and cover the hospital bill while you're at it. I'll pay you back later."

Before he could say another word, I hung up.

He wanted me to come back and be their workhorse?

Dream on!

From now on, I was going to learn how to be a dutiful son from Kyle.

In the end, my heart softened. When I looked into Jenna's eyes, full of hope and remorse, I couldn't bring myself to be completely heartless. I'd fought back to teach them a lesson and save myself, not to destroy anyone.I'd accomplished what I set out to do.Right in front of Jenna, I pulled up the crowdfunding link and shut down the campaign. Then, I called the used-car dealer and canceled the sale of my car.As Jenna stared at me in shock, I said calmly, "We don't need to sell the house or the car. I'll find the money."Without a moment's hesitation, I drew from my company's reserve funds and paid for Fiona's lifesaving surgery. The operation was a success.…A week later, Fiona was moved out of the ICU and into a regular room. When I went to visit her, Jenna was sitting by the bedside, feeding her oatmeal one spoonful at a time. Fiona's hair had turned noticeably grayer, and she looked completely drained of life, as if she'd aged a decade overnight.Kyle and Megan hadn't

As the alarm blared, doctors and nurses swarmed into the ICU, and the room instantly erupted into chaos.Meanwhile, out in the hallway, Kyle and Megan's fight was coming to an end."I'm done! I can't live like this anymore! I want a divorce!" Megan screamed at the top of her lungs one last time. With bloodshot eyes, she shoved a relative out of her way and stormed off toward the elevators without looking back.Kyle slumped on the floor like a marionette with its strings cut. Five distinct finger marks stood out clearly on his face, and his eyes were completely blank. Not a shred of his usual swagger remained. The truth had come to light, and everyone had turned their backs on him.The relatives he'd once used as pawns to guilt-trip me now looked at him like a pile of trash they couldn't get away from fast enough. They practically tripped over themselves trying to leave, mumbling lame excuses like "I left the stove on" and "I have to pick up my grandson from school."In the blink

A nurse taped the staggering bill for Fiona's surgery to the ICU window with icy indifference. It might as well have been a death sentence.300 thousand dollars. The number was printed in bright red, so glaring it hurt to look at.Outside the ICU, the air felt as stifling as a tomb. The relatives had stopped whispering among themselves. Instead, they kept sizing Kyle up with looks that mixed pity, scrutiny, and glee at his misfortune. Their stares pierced him like countless invisible needles, riddling him with holes.Arms crossed, I leaned quietly against a wall some distance away and, like an artist admiring his own masterpiece. I watched coldly as the farce reached its climax. The seconds ticked by. Each one that passed in silence was another brutal hammer blow to Kyle's pride, which was already buckling under the strain. Finally, a stone-faced doctor came out, clipboard in hand. "Fiona Lopez's family? Have you gotten the money together for the surgery yet? I need to remind you

Kyle was drowning in his relatives' accusations, reduced to a whipped dog with no fight left in him.Still, selling my car would take time, and the shortfall for the surgery fee remained. Outside the ICU, the angry accusations slowly died down, and a deathly, despairing silence fell over everyone once again.Just then, I noticed Fiona in a corner of the hallway. With nowhere left to turn, she dialed a number with trembling hands. She pressed the phone tight against her ear. Her usual pride was completely gone, and her voice was so weak it was barely above a whisper."Hello? Is this Tina?"The woman on the other end had to be Jenna's aunt, Tina Lopez—someone I'd only heard about but never met.A shrill, crystal-clear voice blasted through the phone, dripping with open mockery. "Well, well, if it isn't my high-and-mighty big sister! What a rare treat. What made you think of calling me? Did hell freeze over?""Tina, I-I can't hold out much longer," Fiona pleaded. "I urgently need mo

At the hospital, the 300 thousand dollars needed for Fiona's surgery weighed heavily on everyone in the stark white hallway. The staggering cost left them feeling suffocated. On the crowdfunding page, the total sat at a pitiful ten thousand two hundred dollars—a cruel mockery of Kyle's so-called status as the Lawson family's "rock".The seconds ticked by. Inside the ICU, Fiona lay surrounded by monitoring equipment, her expression tight with anxiety and fear. The line on her heart monitor spiked wildly as if possessed. Watching it was enough to make anyone's pulse race. Finally, Jenna started calling me nonstop, in tears."Honey… I'm begging you… Please stop fighting with Kyle," she pleaded, her voice hoarse and desperate. "Mom… my mom really might not make it… The doctor said if we can't come up with the money, all we can do is… start planning her funeral…""Okay. I'll be right there," I agreed without a moment's hesitation, lacing my voice with just the right balance of panic an

After I tagged Kyle in the family group chat, I figured he was ready to skin me alive.I'd put him on trial and tied him firmly to the stake. Every pair of eyes in the "One Big Happy Family" chat was another log thrown onto the fire, piling up until the flames were roaring and he was practically roasting in his own juices. If he donated too little, he'd never be able to show his face around the family again. His mom was critically ill, so if he—the dutiful son and big-shot boss his mom was always bragging about—refused to part with a dime, his name would be dragged through the mud forever once word got out.And if he donated a lot…Who was he kidding? He was all show, keeping up appearances by dipping into his clients' advance payments and wringing money out of me. Did he even have that kind of cash?I wanted him ruined.I wanted him to get a taste of what it felt like to be publicly humiliated.Time ticked by, minute by minute. In the chat, the relatives who had only tagged hi
