Chapter 3

Autor: To The North
When I got home from the hospital, the first thing I did was set my phone to Do Not Disturb so none of my relatives could get through.

Then, I brewed a cup of coffee, booted up my computer, and started digging into the mountain of work that had piled up over the past ten days. I also had to figure out how to win back the ten-million-dollar contract I'd turned down.

Jenna came home around dusk.

The moment she walked in, she hurled her bag onto the couch and yelled at me. Her face was flushed with rage. "Howard! What the hell were you thinking? How could you leave my mom all alone at the hospital? Her arm's still in a cast!"

I didn't bother to look up. My fingers kept flying across the keyboard as I replied flatly, "She isn't alone. She's got that wonderful son of hers."

"This isn't about Kyle! You're my husband!" Jenna barked, her voice shooting up an octave. "Can't you just humor her a little? She's getting old. She doesn't always watch what she says, but her heart's in the right place!"

"Her heart's in the right place?" I repeated, finally pausing my typing and swiveling my chair around to meet her gaze.

It was the first time I'd ever looked at her so coldly.

"Jenna, let me ask you something. At her birthday last year, Kyle pulled a stunt, and I ended up footing the 50-thousand-dollar bill. Have you forgotten that?

"When Kyle bought his new car, your mom took 100 thousand dollars from you, and in the blink of an eye, it turned into a generous gift from her devoted son. Have you forgotten that too?

"And that's not all…"

One by one, I laid out every grievance I'd swallowed and every injustice I'd endured over the past ten years, dumping them all out without holding back.

"All these years, has your mom ever treated you like her daughter, or me like her son-in-law?"

I stood up and stepped toward her, my voice ice-cold. "No. To her, we're nothing but Kyle's ATM—one that hands over whatever she wants and never gets to complain!"

Jenna stepped backward as I confronted her until her back was against the wall, and she had nothing left to say. Her face was deathly pale.

Tears began streaming down her face, but I didn't comfort her like I used to. I just felt utterly exhausted.

In the end, our argument simply fizzled out.

Jenna locked herself in the bedroom, and I spent the night in the study.

…

The next day, I found out I'd been added to a new family group chat called "One Big Happy Family (New)".

It was Fiona's handiwork, of course.

Sure enough, her first message was a close-up photo of her arm in a cast, accompanied by a crying emoji.

Right after that came a long, rambling sob story.

She hit all the usual notes: she'd sacrificed so much to raise her children, yet now that she was old with a broken arm, not a single person was there to care for her.

Worse still, her son-in-law had not only walked out on her but had enraged her so much that her chest hurt and she couldn't sleep. On and on her story went.

Every word dripped with emotion, as though written in tears. She'd cast herself as a lonely, pitiful mother-in-law bullied by a cruel son-in-law.

One after another, relatives in the chat chimed in. Some tried to smooth things over, others took her side, and a few tagged me directly to demand to know what was going on.

The collective pressure from the whole family settled over me like an invisible net.

The old me would have panicked. I'd have called immediately to apologize, then driven straight over to beg for forgiveness on my knees.

Instead, I just stared coldly at the screen, taking in their hypocritical drama without feeling a thing.

I stayed silent in the group chat, watching their performance.

At 8:00 pm on the dot, I dropped a glittering gold animated GIF into the chat that said, "Get well soon, Fiona!"

Then, I tagged Kyle. "Kyle, how's Fiona holding up today? Help me tell her that I'm just too busy with work. It's the thought that counts."

My devotion, like Kyle's, was worth a single GIF and nothing more.

In the end, my heart softened. When I looked into Jenna's eyes, full of hope and remorse, I couldn't bring myself to be completely heartless. I'd fought back to teach them a lesson and save myself, not to destroy anyone.I'd accomplished what I set out to do.Right in front of Jenna, I pulled up the crowdfunding link and shut down the campaign. Then, I called the used-car dealer and canceled the sale of my car.As Jenna stared at me in shock, I said calmly, "We don't need to sell the house or the car. I'll find the money."Without a moment's hesitation, I drew from my company's reserve funds and paid for Fiona's lifesaving surgery. The operation was a success.…A week later, Fiona was moved out of the ICU and into a regular room. When I went to visit her, Jenna was sitting by the bedside, feeding her oatmeal one spoonful at a time. Fiona's hair had turned noticeably grayer, and she looked completely drained of life, as if she'd aged a decade overnight.Kyle and Megan hadn't

As the alarm blared, doctors and nurses swarmed into the ICU, and the room instantly erupted into chaos.Meanwhile, out in the hallway, Kyle and Megan's fight was coming to an end."I'm done! I can't live like this anymore! I want a divorce!" Megan screamed at the top of her lungs one last time. With bloodshot eyes, she shoved a relative out of her way and stormed off toward the elevators without looking back.Kyle slumped on the floor like a marionette with its strings cut. Five distinct finger marks stood out clearly on his face, and his eyes were completely blank. Not a shred of his usual swagger remained. The truth had come to light, and everyone had turned their backs on him.The relatives he'd once used as pawns to guilt-trip me now looked at him like a pile of trash they couldn't get away from fast enough. They practically tripped over themselves trying to leave, mumbling lame excuses like "I left the stove on" and "I have to pick up my grandson from school."In the blink

A nurse taped the staggering bill for Fiona's surgery to the ICU window with icy indifference. It might as well have been a death sentence.300 thousand dollars. The number was printed in bright red, so glaring it hurt to look at.Outside the ICU, the air felt as stifling as a tomb. The relatives had stopped whispering among themselves. Instead, they kept sizing Kyle up with looks that mixed pity, scrutiny, and glee at his misfortune. Their stares pierced him like countless invisible needles, riddling him with holes.Arms crossed, I leaned quietly against a wall some distance away and, like an artist admiring his own masterpiece. I watched coldly as the farce reached its climax. The seconds ticked by. Each one that passed in silence was another brutal hammer blow to Kyle's pride, which was already buckling under the strain. Finally, a stone-faced doctor came out, clipboard in hand. "Fiona Lopez's family? Have you gotten the money together for the surgery yet? I need to remind you

Kyle was drowning in his relatives' accusations, reduced to a whipped dog with no fight left in him.Still, selling my car would take time, and the shortfall for the surgery fee remained. Outside the ICU, the angry accusations slowly died down, and a deathly, despairing silence fell over everyone once again.Just then, I noticed Fiona in a corner of the hallway. With nowhere left to turn, she dialed a number with trembling hands. She pressed the phone tight against her ear. Her usual pride was completely gone, and her voice was so weak it was barely above a whisper."Hello? Is this Tina?"The woman on the other end had to be Jenna's aunt, Tina Lopez—someone I'd only heard about but never met.A shrill, crystal-clear voice blasted through the phone, dripping with open mockery. "Well, well, if it isn't my high-and-mighty big sister! What a rare treat. What made you think of calling me? Did hell freeze over?""Tina, I-I can't hold out much longer," Fiona pleaded. "I urgently need mo

At the hospital, the 300 thousand dollars needed for Fiona's surgery weighed heavily on everyone in the stark white hallway. The staggering cost left them feeling suffocated. On the crowdfunding page, the total sat at a pitiful ten thousand two hundred dollars—a cruel mockery of Kyle's so-called status as the Lawson family's "rock".The seconds ticked by. Inside the ICU, Fiona lay surrounded by monitoring equipment, her expression tight with anxiety and fear. The line on her heart monitor spiked wildly as if possessed. Watching it was enough to make anyone's pulse race. Finally, Jenna started calling me nonstop, in tears."Honey… I'm begging you… Please stop fighting with Kyle," she pleaded, her voice hoarse and desperate. "Mom… my mom really might not make it… The doctor said if we can't come up with the money, all we can do is… start planning her funeral…""Okay. I'll be right there," I agreed without a moment's hesitation, lacing my voice with just the right balance of panic an

After I tagged Kyle in the family group chat, I figured he was ready to skin me alive.I'd put him on trial and tied him firmly to the stake. Every pair of eyes in the "One Big Happy Family" chat was another log thrown onto the fire, piling up until the flames were roaring and he was practically roasting in his own juices. If he donated too little, he'd never be able to show his face around the family again. His mom was critically ill, so if he—the dutiful son and big-shot boss his mom was always bragging about—refused to part with a dime, his name would be dragged through the mud forever once word got out.And if he donated a lot…Who was he kidding? He was all show, keeping up appearances by dipping into his clients' advance payments and wringing money out of me. Did he even have that kind of cash?I wanted him ruined.I wanted him to get a taste of what it felt like to be publicly humiliated.Time ticked by, minute by minute. In the chat, the relatives who had only tagged hi
