AIDEN BLACK

“Why isn’t he waking up?” I barked, slamming my hand against the bedside table.

The doctor flinched. “Sir… we’ve tried everything. His vitals are stable, but…”

I didn’t let him finish. I walked to the window, fists clenched. The city lights blurred into streaks as I stared out. I should have been used to this by now. I wasn’t. Not after the first time. Not after losing my sister three years ago.

“Three years, and still nothing,” I muttered to myself, teeth grinding. My brother’s cough echoed in my memory, faint but unmistakable. Every moment of helplessness burned me again.

“Sir, please…” another voice interrupted. One of my men, Marcus, I think. He’s been with me for a long time. “You need to rest. If you don’t…”

“I don’t need to rest,” I snapped, turning on him. “I need a cure. A solution. I need someone who can save him before it’s too late.”

He didn’t answer. He never did. Not when I was like this or when I was planning my next move.

The problem wasn’t the illness itself, it was the disease. No doctor, no specialist, no miracle, had managed to halt it and no one would. Not unless I found the right person.

I paced the room, voice low, muttering to myself. “Three years ago, I lost her. I won’t lose him, either. Not him.”

The room fell quiet. The only sound was the soft beep of machines and the faint shuffle of someone outside the door.

“Sir?” Marcus asked again, hesitant. “We’ve… we’ve been monitoring a few leads on experimental treatments. Maybe..”

I cut him off with a wave. “No. I don’t want any experiments. I want proof. I want a cure.”

A knock at the door. “Sir, your assistant says there’s a broadcast you need to see. National network..about a cure.”

I froze. “What?”

He gestured at the screen across the room. I flicked it on.

And there she was.

Isabel Mays.

My brows knitted together as I watched. Her voice was calm, composed, but there was fire behind it.

“Epilepsy is a condition that affects millions. For years, treatments have only managed symptoms. But what we’ve developed is…”

I didn’t need to hear more.

I knew her. Not personally. But I knew that face, that voice, that confidence. Whoever she was, she was the key.

Marcus cleared his throat. “Sir…”

“I don’t care who tries to stop me,” I said, pacing again. “I will find her. No matter the cost. No matter who’s in the way.”

Marcus looked worried. “There are… complications. The people trying to block access to her research…”

I snapped. “I don’t care. I will cut through anyone. Anyone who tries to stop me. She’s going to save my brother.”

I slammed my fist against the wall, the metal frame of the monitor shaking slightly. “And I will find her. Now.”

Later that night, I sat in my office, the city sprawling below, cold and indifferent. My phone buzzed constantly, messages, updates, threats. Everything a CEO, a man with influence and power, is used to. But this… this was personal. This was my brother. And if I failed, I would lose everything that mattered.

“Sir, you need to slow down,” Marcus said again, leaning against the doorframe. “They’re watching. The ones trying to block you, they know you’re onto them now.”

I didn’t look at him. “Let them watch. Let them try. No one stops me from saving him. Not this time. Not ever.”

Marcus sighed. “And the broadcast?”

I leaned back in the chair, staring at the ceiling. “Isabel Mays. That’s the name. She’s the only one who’s done what no one else could.”

“You mean she’s a… researcher?”

“Yes. Neuroscientist. Experimental treatment. She has what we need. And I will find her.”

I remembered the first day of the accident. Three years ago. I had lost someone I trusted more than anyone. My sister was gone in a blink, and I couldn’t stop it. I swore then I’d never be powerless again.

And now? Now my brother, my only family left, was lying in that bed, fragile, his life hanging by a thread. And Daniel Carrington, was trying to stop me. Always trying. Always waiting to see me fail. He wanted control, power, influence. And my brother? He didn’t care. He just wanted me to fail.

But I wouldn’t. I couldn’t.

I picked up the phone. My fingers trembled slightly, but my voice was steady. “Get me everything on Isabel Mays. Where she lives. Where she works. Who she’s met with. Now.”

Marcus swallowed, hesitation clear. “Sir… It’s going to be difficult. She’s… not easy to track.”

“I don’t care,” I said, cutting him off. “Nothing is difficult when lives are at stake. Find her. And don’t let anyone know we’re coming. Carrington will try to interfere.”

He nodded. “Yes, sir. I’ll… I’ll start immediately.”

I hung up.

I stared at the screen again, watching her speak about neurons, synapses, and the cure. Calm. Focused. Determined.

The problem wasn’t just finding her. It was keeping her safe from those who wanted to stop her. From Carrington. From anyone with ambition or greed. And yet… I couldn’t wait. My brother’s life was at stake.

I walked toward the balcony, the night air cold against my skin. I thought about what I had lost three years ago. The helplessness. The rage. The grief that never left. I swore I wouldn’t feel that again. Not when I had the chance to stop it.

And now I had a lead. A brilliant one. And I would take it.

I clenched my jaw. “Isabel Mays,” I said softly, almost to myself. “You don’t know it yet… but you’re about to change my life. And my brother’s. And nothing… no one… will stop me from finding you.”

Below, the city continued, unaware of the storm about to descend. I didn’t care. I never did.

I had one goal. One mission. And I would see it through.

ISABEL MAYSAiden was saying something. I heard his voice, low, controlled, answering the question I had asked but I wasn’t really listening anymore. My eyes were on the monitor steadily. The rhythm didn’t change. Not even slightly. No fluctuation. No reaction. Nothing. That wasn’t normal. Not for someone in his condition or someone who had been like this for the past three years.“…and after that, the seizures stopped,” Aiden finished.I barely nodded.“What triggered it?”A pause.“We don’t know.”I glanced at him briefly. “You don’t know, or no one told you?”His jaw tightened. “We don’t know.”I looked back at the screen.“First symptoms?”“Seizures. Then weakness. Then he collapsed.”“How long between the seizures and the collapse?”“A few weeks.”“And the doctors?”“They tried everything.”I exhaled slowly. “Clearly not everything.”His gaze snapped to me. “What is that supposed to mean?”I didn’t answer.Because something wasn’t right. And the more I looked… the clearer it beca

ISABEL MAYSThe silence stretched, it lingered after Aiden’s answer and stayed there longer than it should have, thick and uncomfortable, pressing against my skin. The woman’s eyes were still on me. Like I had stepped into a place I wasn’t meant to be. She was in a luxury mini gown with a shining red lipgloss which made her look like someone who was possessed. Aiden didn’t say anything else. He just turned and walked inside as if that would settle everything. I hesitated just for a second. But it was enough to feel her gaze burn into me. Then I followed. The moment I stepped in, something felt off. Not the luxury, I already expected that.It was so quiet. Everything was too controlled. Too still. Like even the air had rules. Aiden didn’t slow down. Didn’t check if I was behind him. He just walked, long strides and straight ahead. I had to increase my steps to keep up with him. “Are you going to tell me anything?” I asked, slightly out of breath.“No.”I blinked. “No?”“You’ll s

ISABEL MAYSThe car felt too quiet, not a peaceful one but a heavy kind. The kind that sat on your chest and made it hard to breathe.I stared out the window, watching the city lights blur past. My hands were folded tightly on my lap, but I could still feel the tension crawling through me.“You could at least say something,” I muttered.Aiden didn’t look at me. His hands stayed firm on the steering wheel. “I don’t see the need.”I scoffed. “Of course you don’t. You never see the need to explain anything, do you?”Still nothing.I turned to him, irritation rising. “You dragged me out of my workplace like I didn’t have a choice. The least you can do is tell me where we’re going.”“My house,” he said simply.“That’s not an explanation.”“It’s enough.”I let out a short laugh, shaking my head. “You’re unbelievable.”“And you talk too much.”I froze for a second, then turned fully toward him. “Excuse me?”“You heard me,” he said calmly. “If you spent less time arguing and more time focusi

ISABEL MAYSI didn’t notice the time passing. The lab was quiet, machines humming softly, monitors blinking in rhythm with my heartbeat. I adjusted the sample under the microscope, careful not to disturb anything. Three years of work had led me here, to the point where I finally felt I could make a difference.“Isabel, you’ve got a visitor,” one of the lab assistants said, peeking in. “Someone… important. He says it’s urgent.”I frowned. “Important how? Is it a donor? A collaborator? What kind of visitor would come by at 2am?”The assistant hesitated. “He…he didn’t give a name. Just said it’s about your research. He seemed..very serious.” Serious was an understatement. I had learned over the years that “serious” usually meant trouble. But I shrugged it off. “Fine. Send him in.” The door opened and he stepped in. He was tall, dark, broad shouldered. Everything about him screamed power. His eyes, a sharp gray, scanned the room, landing on me with the weight of someone used to gettin

  • Cruel By Design    Where I am Seen

ISABEL MAYSThe house was so noisy and full of music from the loudspeakers. I sat on my bed, legs crossed, staring at the ceiling. The music from downstairs pulsed through the floorboards, but it felt distant, like it belonged to another world. My trousers lay folded beside me. I didn’t care anymore.I thought about work…my real world. The hospital, the lab, the countless nights spent figuring out something no one else thought possible. I had found a cure for Epilepsy. I had been called into meetings, conferences, and interviews… all up and down the city. People congratulated me, sent messages of gratitude, and praised my name. There, I mattered. I could make a difference, but not in this house or with my family. The door creaked. I peeked through, expecting the party to be in full swing. Guests were arriving. Polite greetings. Handshakes. Laughs. Some smiles, some whispers. I caught snippets as I passed the hall, ragged, poor, unworthy…their voices like ice crawling across my ski
