Chapter Five

Seanna POV

Lunch over, back to the grind.

We stepped out of the break room and walked back toward the front desk.

Something about the gym felt… different.

I glance up from the basket that had held the towels I was folding and notice him.

Still there.

Okay I need to take this back to the laundry room.

Autumn walked with me.

The tall, broad-shouldered guy from earlier — the one who spun like a puppy and ran for the bathroom — standing by the free weights, looking… normal-ish, I guess. But my chest insists on skipping beats for some reason I can’t explain.

Autumn notices too. As we step out of the break room, her head snaps toward him.

she says dryly, grinning. “So was that’s the one auditioning for most dramatic gym entrance ever.”

I almost laugh, but my eyes are glued to him. He doesn’t look threatening. He doesn’t even look… aware I’m watching. And yet. Something about his presence makes the room feel heavier, warmer, like the air itself shifted.

“Yeah that’s him. Although of all the weird things I deal with I’d say he feels the least threatening tonight.”

My gesture with my eyes toward the treadmill that Ezekiel was now using.

And autumn make a face that looks like she just smelled something bad.

“I can hit him with my car… on… accidentally Oppsies…”

I laughed and put the basket down.

“Nahh… I’d prefer you not in prison. Besides… orange does you no favors.”

Autumn nudges my shoulder lightly. “ It do not. Anyway. Lunch is over. I’m off. Don’t die on me.”

I smile, waving her off. “Bye, Autumn.”

And just like that, she’s gone.

The moment her footsteps fade, my stomach flips. Something instinctual tugs at me, and I suddenly realize — I can still smell him.

I didn’t realize it at first, the gym is full of guys cologne and body spray 24/7. Truthfully they abuse it. I would be able taste “Midnight Apollo temptation” but unfortunately some of the guy that came in were obviously trying to compensate for a multitude of sins.

But he didn’t smell like that.

It was different… hard to describe. Peppery. And sweet. Not like candy sweet but the way the perfect cup of espresso with two shots of mocha was.

And maybe like mahogany wood… but none of it was especially overwhelming. Just there. Teasing my nose like nostalgia I couldn’t quite place.

Why am I focusing so heavily on this?!

Before I can think too hard, Ezekiel — is heading toward the front desk.

My pulse spikes.

Nope. Not today. Not letting that weird, staring creep near me.

I bolt past Nate without a word, leaving him to deal with Ezekiel, and retreat back to the machines and cleaning. My hands shake a little as I wipe down benches, stack mats, and check inventory.

I pull my phone out to distract myself, fingers trembling slightly. I had never thought

*ding*

James.

James: Coming up to stay with your parents in a weekMy heart jumps into my throat.

It’s really happening.

They’re finally going to meet. The man my father has known for years, the one he suggested to me.

I glance around the quiet gym. I’m twenty-five now. In my world, that’s practically ancient. Most girls were married, had children, and already carried the weight of church expectations by eighteen. I’ve been engaged twice — both abusive. Both escapes with scars to prove it. And now… finally, finally, someone I might actually trust is coming into my life on my terms.

Before I can spiral too far into panic and excitement, my phone dings again.

James: So… I guess I’ll get to ask you all the questions I’ve been wanting to now.

I swallow hard.

And just like that, the gym feels impossibly quiet.

My hands still smell faintly of disinfectant and laundry. My chest feels tight. My heart is racing.

I tuck my phone away, straighten my back, and force myself to keep cleaning.

Because for once, I need to survive the night.

And maybe… just maybe… the world isn’t entirely impossible.

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Land Far away

Chapter — Seanna pov Sunday morning arrived far too quickly. I barely slept. I hadn’t had full blown nightmares but they had danced in the corners of my conscience. Always threatening if I slept to deeply… to soundly- to take over. Between the dinner, the porch conversation, and everything that had been swirling through my mind lately, my brain refused to shut off. Still, church mornings happened whether you were tired or not. By the time we arrived, the parking lot was already filling with cars and the familiar buzz of conversation drifted through the open doors. James came with us. Which felt… strange. Not bad. Just different. Now that we had agreed to be friends, the tension between us had softened. He walked beside me easily as we entered the church, occasionally making quiet observations about t

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Death Dumplings

Taydyn’s Pov ———————— The drive back to the Crescent pack clinic felt longer than the hour it had taken to get here. Terrence sat in the back with me, slumped against the seat. He looked terrible. Pale. Sweating. But somehow still conscious. “You know,” he muttered weakly, “this is not how I pictured my day going.” I snorted despite myself. “Oh yeah?” “Yeah. I figured if I ever got poisoned it’d be by bad takeout. That Chinese/Texmex place you always made us go on Game nights?” I smiled at him remembering “Juan-Tons” “That’s it! The one with the dumplings of death!” I could feel how much he was trying to stay calm- but him reminiscing on the past suddenly made my skin crawl. Bella glanced back nervously from the passenger seat. “Terrence… maybe save the jokes.” “Nah,” he said hoarsely. “If I stop joking that’s when you should panic.” We pulled into the Crescent clinic minutes later. Karissa was already out of the Hummer before it fully stopped.

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   That could have gone better

Chapter — Taydyn’s POV The sound echoed through the metal tower like a gunshot. A sickening thud followed by the unmistakable crack of bone. For half a heartbeat I froze. Then my stomach dropped. “Terrence?” I shouted, already lunging for the door. No answer. Only a groan. My hand ripped the turbine door open and the wolfsbane scent slammed into me again like a wall. Even with the mask it burned my lungs. Bella rushed in behind me. “What happened?!” she demanded. I didn’t answer. My eyes were already searching the interior. Karissa was halfway down the ladder, clinging to the rungs with white knuckles. Her braid had come loose, strands of dark hair stuck to her sweat damp face. But my eyes went straight to the floor. Terrence. He was crumpled at the base of the ladder. One leg twisted wrong. Very wrong. Zey surged forward in my mind with a low snarl. Bone break. Bad one. “Shit,” I breathed. Karissa slid the rest of the way down the ladder, d

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Friends

Seanna POV Dinner began the way all uncomfortable dinners do. With too much food. Too many expectations. And entirely too many people pretending everything was perfectly normal. The table was packed with dishes my mother had clearly been preparing for half the day—roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, a giant bowl of salad, and three different desserts waiting patiently on the counter. James sat across from me while my parents flanked the ends of the table like silent overseers of the entire event. Autumn sat beside me. Eli across from her. Everyone smiled. Everyone waited. And my mother immediately took control. “Seanna,” she said sharply, “ask James what he would like to drink.” I blinked at her. “He can tell me himself,” I said calmly. “Water is fine,” James said politely.

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   *THUD*

Taydyn’s POV She walked down the stairs toward us. Well. There it was. The real her. Not the flirty, polished mask she usually wore. She had a backbone after all. “You’re right,” I admitted. “Most people don’t. Because you don’t show your teeth. I’d rather see your teeth than those fake smiles.” She huffed. Then shrugged. “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” I snorted. “You’re a fucking werewolf. Not a frog.” For the first time, Karissa laughed. A real laugh. She shook her head, clearly deciding to let the past go. Thank goodness. I didn’t have the energy for drama. I shifted the conversation. “We could smell wolfsbane in the air about a mile out.” Her expression turned serious immediately. She nodded. “It comes and goes. Sometimes it’s so strong I fe

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Show Time

Chapter — Seanna The road stretched out in front of me in long, quiet miles. I drove on autopilot. My hands rested on the steering wheel, my eyes on the road, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. It kept replaying the moment. Taydyn’s face. The way his eyes widened when I grabbed his shirt. The way his body had gone completely still when I kissed him. My stomach twisted. “I didn’t mean to do that…” I murmured to myself. But that wasn’t exactly true. It had just… happened. The memory of his lips still lingered against mine, warm and steady and impossible to forget. I pressed my lips together as if that might erase the feeling. It didn’t. If anything, it made it worse. I groaned softly and leaned my head back against the seat for a moment before forcing myself to focus on the road again.

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   She’s Gone

Chapter — Taydyn Her lips were warm. Soft. Real. For half a heartbeat my brain stopped working entirely. Then she pulled away. And before I could even process what had just happened—before I could say a sing

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Made of Glass

Seanna’s POV I don’t know why. Maybe because in the back of my mind there was this small voice saying this would be the only chance I ever had to hold his hand. Maybe because the second our fingers full

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   No Plan B

Seanna’s POV I stood there staring at him for what felt like forever and then... He nodded… yes. Relief and guilt twisted together in my chest. He pushed off my jeep and headed for his car. I

  • Cult of the Crescent Curse   Before Goodbye

Chapter — Seanna I felt sick. Not metaphorically. Not dramatically. Physically, genuinely sick. Like if I moved too fast—or breathed too deep—I might actually throw up right there in the middle of my own gym. God.
