MasukChapter Four
Taydyn POV I step back out of the bathroom, every nerve ending on fire. I know she’s still here. Not because I can see her — she’s gone from the front desk — but because the scent doesn’t lie. Sea salt, amber, vanilla. Calm, warm, hers. Zey is already pacing in my mind like a caged wolf. “Where is she? Where is she?” I know, I know, I hiss back internally, trying to force my own heartbeat to behave. Trying to appear… normal. Impossible. Every sense is screaming in opposite directions. Sight says she’s gone. Smell says she’s right here. Sound says the hum of empty treadmills is safe. Zey says she’s mine. I head toward the free weights. A large mirror runs the length of the wall, reflecting the deserted gym. I can see the front desk in it. Empty. Of course. I spot a small call bell, the kind you press to summon someone if the desk is unattended. Too obvious, I think. What would I even ask? Would she know I’m… No, no, I can’t think about that. I just need to act human. I glance down at my hand and nearly freeze. Blood. Not fresh, mostly healed from the mirror punch, but enough to make it look far worse than it is. Panic claws at my chest. Then — idea. First aid kit. Ask for a first aid kit. Innocuous. Normal. Before my brain fully catches up, my feet are moving. I press the bell with a deliberate ding. My pulse is hammering in my ears, adrenaline making me shake. Seconds tick by. Then the short guy from earlier — the one I now know as Nate — appears, casual as if he hadn’t just watched a human-sized man implode in the bathroom five minutes ago. “Hey muscles!” he says, grinning. “My mirror still okay?” I feel Zey groan internally, disappointed that the wolf’s ‘mate recognition moment’ got interrupted. I roll my eyes at the mental commentary but decide to commit. I hold out my hand like a normal human and say, “Uh… do you guys happen to have a first aid kit?” Nate tilts his head, amused, and gestures toward the supply closet. “Yep, come with me. Got everything you need.” I follow, still scanning the room, scanning the gym, scanning everything for her. As he rummages through the cabinet, I try — poorly — to make small talk. “Uh… I’m Taydyn,” I say, keeping my tone casual. Inside my head, Zey immediately pipes up. “SHUT UP! Say it like a wolf! Introduce yourself properly! She needs to—” Zey, no. Not now. Nate finally pulls out a small box. “Here you go. Bandages, antiseptic… all the fun stuff.” I nod, fumbling slightly. “Thanks… uh… Nate?” He shrugs. “Yeah. That’s me. Local protein dealer and gym janitorial hero.” We end up in a goofy little back-and-forth about free weights, gym weirdos, protein powder habits, and who actually uses the elliptical. I laugh quietly, keeping it light. Trying to be normal. All the while, my senses are on high alert, still hunting for her. “So… you work night shift alone?” I ask casually, hoping it doesn’t sound too intense. Nate smirks. “Nah. My little gremlin sidekick’s here more than I am. She’s on lunch right now. Bit odd, but alright. Mostly. A walking accident, though — you might want to give her a wide berth.” Zey growls low in my mind. Another male near my mate? I exhale slowly. Relax. She’s safe. Nate seems solid. Protective. Good. Logic says it’s fine. The conversation naturally peters out as we finish cleaning up my hand. Careful not to ever show him it’s already healed at this point. I nod my thanks and step back toward the free weights, careful not to glance back at the front desk. I can still smell her. And I will wait. Forever if I have to.Chapter — Seanna pov Sunday morning arrived far too quickly. I barely slept. I hadn’t had full blown nightmares but they had danced in the corners of my conscience. Always threatening if I slept to deeply… to soundly- to take over. Between the dinner, the porch conversation, and everything that had been swirling through my mind lately, my brain refused to shut off. Still, church mornings happened whether you were tired or not. By the time we arrived, the parking lot was already filling with cars and the familiar buzz of conversation drifted through the open doors. James came with us. Which felt… strange. Not bad. Just different. Now that we had agreed to be friends, the tension between us had softened. He walked beside me easily as we entered the church, occasionally making quiet observations about t
Taydyn’s Pov ———————— The drive back to the Crescent pack clinic felt longer than the hour it had taken to get here. Terrence sat in the back with me, slumped against the seat. He looked terrible. Pale. Sweating. But somehow still conscious. “You know,” he muttered weakly, “this is not how I pictured my day going.” I snorted despite myself. “Oh yeah?” “Yeah. I figured if I ever got poisoned it’d be by bad takeout. That Chinese/Texmex place you always made us go on Game nights?” I smiled at him remembering “Juan-Tons” “That’s it! The one with the dumplings of death!” I could feel how much he was trying to stay calm- but him reminiscing on the past suddenly made my skin crawl. Bella glanced back nervously from the passenger seat. “Terrence… maybe save the jokes.” “Nah,” he said hoarsely. “If I stop joking that’s when you should panic.” We pulled into the Crescent clinic minutes later. Karissa was already out of the Hummer before it fully stopped.
Chapter — Taydyn’s POV The sound echoed through the metal tower like a gunshot. A sickening thud followed by the unmistakable crack of bone. For half a heartbeat I froze. Then my stomach dropped. “Terrence?” I shouted, already lunging for the door. No answer. Only a groan. My hand ripped the turbine door open and the wolfsbane scent slammed into me again like a wall. Even with the mask it burned my lungs. Bella rushed in behind me. “What happened?!” she demanded. I didn’t answer. My eyes were already searching the interior. Karissa was halfway down the ladder, clinging to the rungs with white knuckles. Her braid had come loose, strands of dark hair stuck to her sweat damp face. But my eyes went straight to the floor. Terrence. He was crumpled at the base of the ladder. One leg twisted wrong. Very wrong. Zey surged forward in my mind with a low snarl. Bone break. Bad one. “Shit,” I breathed. Karissa slid the rest of the way down the ladder, d
Seanna POV Dinner began the way all uncomfortable dinners do. With too much food. Too many expectations. And entirely too many people pretending everything was perfectly normal. The table was packed with dishes my mother had clearly been preparing for half the day—roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls, a giant bowl of salad, and three different desserts waiting patiently on the counter. James sat across from me while my parents flanked the ends of the table like silent overseers of the entire event. Autumn sat beside me. Eli across from her. Everyone smiled. Everyone waited. And my mother immediately took control. “Seanna,” she said sharply, “ask James what he would like to drink.” I blinked at her. “He can tell me himself,” I said calmly. “Water is fine,” James said politely.
Taydyn’s POV She walked down the stairs toward us. Well. There it was. The real her. Not the flirty, polished mask she usually wore. She had a backbone after all. “You’re right,” I admitted. “Most people don’t. Because you don’t show your teeth. I’d rather see your teeth than those fake smiles.” She huffed. Then shrugged. “You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.” I snorted. “You’re a fucking werewolf. Not a frog.” For the first time, Karissa laughed. A real laugh. She shook her head, clearly deciding to let the past go. Thank goodness. I didn’t have the energy for drama. I shifted the conversation. “We could smell wolfsbane in the air about a mile out.” Her expression turned serious immediately. She nodded. “It comes and goes. Sometimes it’s so strong I fe
Chapter — Seanna The road stretched out in front of me in long, quiet miles. I drove on autopilot. My hands rested on the steering wheel, my eyes on the road, but my mind was somewhere else entirely. It kept replaying the moment. Taydyn’s face. The way his eyes widened when I grabbed his shirt. The way his body had gone completely still when I kissed him. My stomach twisted. “I didn’t mean to do that…” I murmured to myself. But that wasn’t exactly true. It had just… happened. The memory of his lips still lingered against mine, warm and steady and impossible to forget. I pressed my lips together as if that might erase the feeling. It didn’t. If anything, it made it worse. I groaned softly and leaned my head back against the seat for a moment before forcing myself to focus on the road again.
Chapter NineSeannaI slipped into the bathroom at the 7-11 and peeled off my black dress, folding it carefully and tucking it into my backpack like contraband.Black jeans.Uniform shirt. Normal enough. My fingers stilled when I caught sight of my reflection.
Taydyn’s POVI had run for what felt like hours. The world blurred past in streaks of green and gold, the early morning sun filtering through the trees in fractured beams that flashed across my vision with every powerful stride. The earth was cool beneath my paws, damp with dew,
