Kiss The Lycan King

(Gwen’s POV)

I didn't make it past the front door before my legs gave out, and my mother found me crumpled against the frame, soaked to the skin and shaking so hard that my teeth clicked together.

"Gwen?" She dropped the cloth she was holding and knelt beside me, her hands moving over my wet hair and my cold cheeks. "Goddess above, what happened? Why are you drenched?"

"Mama." My voice broke on the word. "It's Liam."

"What about him? Did he hurt you?"

"He's gay." The words tumbled out between sobs, ugly and humiliating. "I walked in on him with another man, and he kissed him like he'd never kissed me, Mama, not once in two years. Then he broke up with me, as if I wasn't the one who should have said it first."

She said nothing, and I felt her arms tighten around me, warm in a way that made me cry even harder. She smelled of lavender and bread, the smell of every childhood sickness and every scraped knee I'd ever had.

"Oh, my sweet girl," she whispered into my hair. "Oh, my brave, foolish girl."

"I'm not brave. I'm humiliated. Everyone thought we would be married by spring. Father already told half the council."

"Your father will get over his embarrassment, and so will you." She pulled back, cupping my face, and her thumbs wiped away the tears that kept coming. "You loved him honestly. That's nothing to be ashamed of."

My voice broke even more. "He lied to me."

"He lied to himself first, which is a kind of cruelty all its own." She kissed my forehead. "Now come upstairs and change before you catch your death."

I flinched at that word, but she didn't notice. She drew me a bath, tucked me into bed, and sat beside me stroking my hair until I fell into an exhausted, dreamless sleep with my left hand curled tight against my chest.

The scream woke me the next morning.

It was high and raw and utterly unlike my mother, and I was out of bed and halfway across the room before I was fully awake, my heart hammering.

Sunlight streamed through the window, and my mother stood at the foot of my bed with both hands pressed over her mouth.

"Mama? What's wrong?"

"Your hand." She could barely get the words out. "Gwen, your hand."

I looked down. A dark, intricate mark curled across the back of my left hand, black as ink and spreading in thin, branching lines toward my wrist like the veins of a leaf, and it pulsed faintly when I stared at it, as if it were alive.

"No," I whispered. "No, no, no."

My father burst into the room a moment later, still in his nightshirt, his hair wild. "What is it? Who screamed?" Then he saw the mark, and the color fled from his face. "That's a witch's curse!"

"Gwen." My mother grabbed my shoulders. "Tell us everything. Did you meet a witch last night?"

I swallowed hard. "She was sitting by the fountain in the old market, an old woman in a mossy shawl. She poured a pitcher of water over my head for no reason, and I slapped her. I was so angry, Mama, I wasn't thinking."

"You slapped a witch??" My father sank onto the edge of my bed like his knees had failed him. "Gods help us."

"She said that two years from last night, my heart would stop." My voice cracked. "And she knew my name, though I never told her."

My parents exchanged a long look and my stomach dropped, because it wasn't surprise.

"You know her?" I said slowly. "Both of you know her."

"Her name is Morwen," my mother said quietly. "She lives at the edge of the forest. We've known her since, before you were born."

"Then you have to take me to her. Now."

"Get dressed," my father said, rising. "We leave at once."

The path to Morwen's house was through the forest where the trees grew so thick that daylight came down in thin, cold threads, and the air smelled like wet earth and burned herbs.

The house was at the end of it, small and crooked, with a roof sagging under heavy moss and crooked windows that seemed to watch us as we approached.

Bundles of dried roots and bones hung from the eaves, and they clicked softly together.

"I hate this place," I whispered.

"Stay close," my mother murmured, gripping my uninjured hand.

The door opened before we even reached it.

Morwen stood in the doorway, no longer hunched, her silver eyes was bright with amusement, and the red mark of my slap still faintly visible on her cheek. She leaned against the frame and looked me over slowly.

"Little one," she said, smiling, "did your parents never teach you not to slap your elders?"

My face burned. "You poured water on me."

"And you struck me. We each have our crimes." Her gaze moved to my parents, and her expression softened. "Alaric. Seren. It has been a really long time."

"Morwen." My father bowed his head, and I stared at him, because I had never once seen him bow to anyone. "We have come to beg forgiveness for our daughter. She is young and was grieving, and she acted in anger."

"Please." My mother stepped forward, her voice trembling. "She doesn't understand what she did. Remove the curse, and we'll give you whatever you ask."

Morwen tilted her head, studying us. "Come inside. I don't discuss such things on the doorstep."

The room inside was cramped and dim, lit by a single guttering candle, and shelves crowded with jars lined every wall.

A black cat watched us from the hearth with intelligence. Morwen settled into a worn chair and gestured for us to sit, but none of us moved.

"Well?" my father said hoarsely.

"A curse of this kind cannot be broken, Alaric." Her tone was almost gentle. "It can only be reversed."

"Then reverse it." My voice came out sharper than I intended. "Tell me how."

Morwen's silver gaze settled on me, and her smile disappeared. "You must kiss the Lycan King, child. Xaden himself. Three times, before two years have passed, or your heart will stop as I said."

The room went utterly silent, and I heard the cat meow.

"The king?" I whispered. "The ruthless king? The one who has never looked twice at a woman?"

"That one," Morwen said softly, and her smile returned, slowly. "I suggest you start practicing your manners, Gwen."

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    What Was I Thinking?

(Gwen's POV)The door to our room was barely closed when Sera shoved me.It wasn't a gentle push. Both her palms hit my shoulders and I staggered backward until my hip struck the bedpost, and the pain shot straight up my side."What was that?" she hissed."Sera, I—""Don't 'Sera' me." Her voice was low and shaking with fury. "In front of the entire court, you threw yourself at the king like a kitchen maid at a stable boy. Did you think nobody would see?""I wasn't thinking.""No, you were planning." She stalked toward me, "Let me guess. You saw his chest yesterday, and you thought a little hug, a little dirt, a little trembling, and he would take pity on you. You think you can seduce Xaden?"My face burned so hot. I opened my mouth to tell her I'd only been relieved, that I'd thought I was going to die, that my arms had moved before my brain caught up. But every word sounded like an excuse, and the truth was worse than any excuse, because she was right about one thing. I hadn't thoug

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    Why Did I Feel Her?

(Xaden's POV)I expected a bow or perhaps tears from the girl. I did not expect her to let out a breathless sound halfway between a laugh and a sob and run straight at me.She crashed into my chest with both arms flung around my ribs, dirt and dried blood and all, and the whole hall went silent. Two guards took a step forward. I lifted one finger, and they stopped. "I'm alive," she said into my coat, in a trembling voice that was clearly meant for no one but herself. "It wasn't tiger. It was deer, and I'm alive."She smelled of sweat, crushed apples and wet forest earth. Her braid had come half undone and was scratching my chin, and in her excitement her right hand slid down my forearm and closed over the back of my hand.I stopped.I felt a chill, a sudden cold that rolled up my arm and across my shoulders, like the first rush of blood into a limb that had been numb for years. I felt her fingers. Small, warm, trembling, rough with the blisters a bowstring leaves. I felt the pulse i

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    That’s How I Die

(Gwen’s POV)The noon bell had stopped ringing by the time I stumbled out of the trees, and my arms felt like they'd been torn off and sewn back on crooked. The palace gates were open. Rhea stood at the foot of the steps with her hands clasped behind her back, and the other nine girls were lined up beside her, each with an animal at her feet. Every head turned toward me at once.I didn't have the strength to be embarrassed. I just kept pulling, one boot after another, the deer's white head bumping along the gravel behind me, until I reached Rhea and let go of its leg with a groan."Here," I wheezed, bent double with my hands on my knees. "I'm back. Before the bell. I think."Rhea didn't answer. She was staring at the deer. "You caught this?""Yes.”"Alone?""Who else would have helped me?" I straightened, tugging my sagging sleeve back over my wrist. "It took all the twelve arrows just to get one shot."A low murmur went through the girls. The redhead's eyes were huge. "It's white," s

(Gwen’s POV)I caught up with Rhea at the foot of the palace steps, tugging my sleeves back up. "Rhea, may I speak with you for a moment?"She didn't stop walking. "You may speak while we walk.""Could I change my clothes? This tunic is far too big, and I think there's been a mistake." I held out my arms so she could see the sleeves hanging past my fingers. "If I could just get a smaller size, I promise I'll be quick.""No.""No?""There are no smaller clothes left." She finally glanced down at me, I thought I saw sympathy in her eyes before it was swallowed up by that flat, professional calm. "The seamstress prepared ten uniforms by the king's measurements for the girls he was expected to choose. Yours was the last one cut, and the last one left.""But I can't hunt in this. I'll trip.""Then you will trip carefully." She turned and started walking again. "After the hunt, I will see what can be done about your clothes. Until then, you will make do."I stared at her back, my chest tigh

(Gwen’s POV)The bell rang through my sleep. I shot upright with my heart hammering and the quilt tangled around my legs. "Finally," a voice said. "I was starting to think you'd died."Sera stood in the middle of the room, fully dressed in a fitted dark riding outfit that hugged every curve, her hair twisted into a neat knot with the gold threads catching the light. She looked rested, while I felt like something dragged out of a river."What's happening?" I rasped. "Is it morning already?""Is it by sleeping that you'll get a chance to see the king, nymph?" She smoothed her sleeve without looking at me. "The commander announced that we have three minutes to be out."My eyes widened. "Three minutes?""Two and a half now."I flew out of bed so fast that I tripped over the quilt and nearly landed on my face. Sera snorted behind me, and I ignored her and ran for the screen at the back of the room, where a basin of water was already kept for me. I plunged my hands in and gasped, because

  • Cursed To Kiss The Ruthless Lycan King    Behave like Sisters

(Gwen’s POV)The warrior woman didn't say a word until the iron door had closed and the courtyard had emptied of everyone who hadn't been picked. Those girls left in silence, some of them in tears, and I tried not to look at the one who'd stepped out of line before me. She walked past with her chin high and her eyes wet, and I felt a small, ugly twist of guilt."Ten of you," the warrior woman said at last, looking us over like a general counting soldiers. "Follow me, and keep your voices down. You will rest properly tonight, because tomorrow will not be kind."We followed her through the palace in a nervous line. The corridors were so tall that our footsteps echoed up into the dark.I kept my gloved hand pressed to my skirt and my eyes on the floor, partly because the girl with the gold in her hair walked three places ahead of me and I didn't want her turning around."Rooms are shared," the woman said over her shoulder. "Two to a room. You will not fight, you will not argue, and you
