CHAPTER 1

Melinda’s POV

I have always been a coward. So, when I found out that I had three mates, I ran. Instead of facing the tough situation head on, I closed my eyes like a cat and pretend that the problem didn’t exist.

‘I still don’t think we are doing the right thing, Melinda.’ My wolf grumbled in a small voice. She was still upset with my decision. Her instincts were stronger than mine and being away from our mates was way more difficult for her.

I held my head and sighed in frustration. ‘What do you expect me to do then, Corel? You tell me. Which of the triplets should I choose? Which two of the three do you want to see dead?’

‘Stop it, Melinda!’ Corel whimpered. ‘Please… I can’t even think about it.’

‘I can’t either.’ Tears rolled down my cheeks as the dread of losing my mates gripped my heart. I turned to the window and shielded my face in an attempt to hide my tears from the other passengers. ‘Why did the moon goddess punish us like this, Corel? Why couldn’t she bless us with a single mate like others?’

‘I don’t know yet, Melinda, but I think Goddess has a plan. You never know, you might be the reason this curse is broken.’

Corel’s optimism did nothing to dispel the darkness of desperation engulfing me. Soul mates are supposed to bring and join families together but I… what was I going to do? Break a beautiful family; kill two out of the three brothers, live with the burden of guilt?

My gaze swept over the economy section of the airplane. Most of the passengers had dozed off. Even the air hostess had retired.

‘We should get some sleep too.’ Corel said, before blocking her thoughts. It felt strangely empty and silent, but I didn’t nudge her. With a soft sigh, I closed my eyes.

My mind veered to day I turned eighteen. I couldn’t sleep that day either, but it wasn’t caused by worry or anxiety. I was just too excited to stay still.

Pacing restlessly, I waited for my mom to arrive; my gaze drifting to my phone every few seconds. Mom had promised that she would return before midnight and stay with me during my first shift.

After what felt like an eternity, the familiar ringtone pierced through the silence. With a wide grin, I picked the phone and spoke in a cheerful voice, “Mom! I can’t believe you have already landed. I knew you would never break your promise.”

“I am sorry, hun. But I am still at the Madrid Airport.”

My heart sank, and the phone almost slipped through my fingers. “What do you mean, you are still in Madrid?”

“I am really sorry, Love. The flights got delayed.”

“But, mom….” I groaned. “Today is my eighteenth birthday. You should be here with me for the first shift.” Tears brimmed in my eyes. “What am I going to do now?”

“Don’t worry, Melie. I have told your aunt….”

Without listening to what mom had said, I disconnected the call. I didn’t want it to be anyone else. It had to be my mom. Why couldn’t she understand such a simple thing?

With a frustrated growl, I grabbed my bag and threw in some necessities. I wasn’t going to wait here for my so-called aunt to come here out of pity.

Locking the door behind me, I drove to the densest part of the reserve. If mom couldn’t make it, fine. I was just going to do this alone.

I found an open spot in the clearing and concealed my car behind an overgrowth.

“Why are you always so busy, mom? Why do you never have time for me?” I grumbled as I spread the blue picnic mat and settled down. “You were supposed to be here for me. You were supposed to walk me through the process of shifting.” I sniffled. “But no! You had to go for that dumb conference.”

I pouted as I looked around. I had made so many plans but…. Mom only cared about money and those stupid deals.

Pressing my palms against the hard ground, I arched my back. My lips spread into a rueful smile. If dad was still alive, we could watch the stars until it was time to shift.

“Dad… Are you still out there?” I cocked my head to one side, and my lips pressed together. “Do you still miss me, Dada?’

‘Do you always talk to yourself?’ A soothing voice sounded in my head. Though I was hearing it for the first time, it felt strangely familiar.

“I don’t but today….” My voice choked up as my heart clenched with the sudden surge of emotions. “I…”

‘You miss your dad a lot, right?’

“I do….”

‘You know you don’t have to say it aloud, right? As your wolf, I share all your thoughts and memories.’

“I know Corel. It just feels a little less lonely to talk out aloud like this.”

‘Corel, I like the name…. I think it will match the color of my fur….’ A searing pain coursed through me and an agonised scream left me. I gasped, ‘Corel, I think it is time…. What am I supposed to do?’

‘Take deep breaths and crouch low. Everything will happen automatically. All you need to do is to endure for a little while and embrace the pain.’

Corel kept talking to me as my bones broke and restructured themselves; one at a time. My body got drenched in sweat as wave after wave of convulsions hit me. At some point, the pain crossed the threshold of my endurance and all I felt was a weird sense of numbness.

When the last convulsion hit me, a loud, primal howl ripped through me. Rubbing the pads of my paws on the ground, I broke into a run.

I bounded faster and faster, howling every once in a while. The sense of liberation I felt while running through the woods was totally worth the pain.

My steps faltered as I drew closer to The Crystal Lake. I leaned over to find the reflection of my wolf’s form staring at me; shiny brown fur, pitch black eyes, and an elegant gait. I don’t mean to gloat, but my wolf form looked quite attractive.

‘You are very pretty as a human too, Melinda. We will enchant our mate at the first glance.’

It was nice being able to share my thoughts in this manner. Corel’s presence dispersed the sense of loneliness that always shrouded me.

‘Corel, I am so glad that I have you.’

With a happy grunt, I broke into a run again; weaving my way through the brambles and pine trees. I noted with delight that my physique allowed me to run for miles without getting tired.

I had just crossed the river when I staggered. My feet came to an abrupt halt and I couldn’t get it to move them the way I wanted. It was like my body didn’t belong to me anymore. Corel was the one in control.

‘Our mate!’ Her excited voice echoed in my head as she took off in a different direction. A faint scent of lemon and mint assaulted my nose as we ran along the weather worn path.

My heartbeat accelerated and all my restraint vanished, making Corel run faster. We had run for about a mile when two more distinct scents assaulted my nose; musk and woody pine.

A strange sense of dread gripped my heart. ‘Corel, I don’t have a good feeling about this. We need to stop.’

She didn’t respond. Driven by the instinct to meet our mate, she continued to run faster than before. It was only when we spotted three large wolves that she finally stopped. Her eyes widened in confusion as she studied the wolves.

The one in the centre was the largest, with pitch black fur. Two wolves flanked him; a dark brown one to his left and a greyish brown one to his right. They looked similar in built but their eyes were different.

The black wolf had piercing grey eyes; the dark brown one had honeyed brown eyes while the grey one had clear blue ones.

‘This is not happening, right?’ Corel’s panicked voice rang in my head. ‘They are not triplets. We are not cursed with three mates., right?’

‘I… I don’t know that, Corel, but I know one thing: we need to run. We can’t act rashly before thinking this through….’

‘I can’t Melinda…. I am too weak to resist the bond.’

‘Let me control this, then….’

With a whimper, she scuttled to the deepest recess of my mind. I could sense her struggle as she fought to suppress the pull of the bond.

Drawing in a deep breath, I spun around and bounded in the opposite direction….

‘Passengers, please fasten your seatbelts. We will be landing in Los Angeles any time.’

The announcement jolted me back to my senses. With a defeated sigh, I stretched my arms and fastened my seatbelt. This was the fourth location I had changed after leaving home.

If things went well, I could settle down here and stay here for a longer time…

KEITH’S POV “Do you think our mate hates us?” Kain said in a disheartened voice as he slumped onto the couch. “Why did she run away like that?”Kramen reached over and patted his back. “It is impossible for any girl to hate my cute, Kain.” His intense shifted to me. “Our mighty, ferocious brother must have scared her off.”“Brother, Keith; you should have listened to us and stayed behind. We would have brought her over after she was com….”My temper flared, filling me with the urge to destroy something. A ferocious growl rumbled through my gritted teeth. “Who do you think you are?” I grabbed Kain by his throat, “How dare you tell me to stay away from our mate!”“This is the very reason we didn’t want you to….” Before Kramen could finish his sentence, I shot out my free arm and grabbed him by the collar of his neck. The muscles of my arms bulged with strain as I held both of my brothers in a death grip.“Keith…. What are you doing?” Kramen stuttered, struggling to free himself. This p

CHAPTER 3
Melinda’s POV My phone beeped with several messages the moment I turned it on. They were all from Ariadna; sent at different times. She was my childhood friend who had shifted to L.A. five years ago.At first we stayed in constant contact but eventually had drifted apart. It was sheer luck that I managed to contact her through a common friend. My lips curved into a weak smile reading her messages. She had rented an apartment for me near the university and had also arranged for a part-time job at a café.‘Adriana is a real sweetheart. I can’t wait to meet her,’ Corel’s voice sounded in my head. ‘If only she were a werewolf….’“She is just a human, and you have to remember that. If you try to take over control and do anything funny, I won’t forgive you.” I accidentally spoke out aloud; earning me a few discerning and awkward looks.Flustered, I grabbed my luggage and made my way out of the airport in a hurry. Aish! I was warning Corel, and what did I do? I had to be careful of my actio

CHAPTER 4
KEITH’S POV “Will this charm really work?” Kain asked, twisting the band of small, black crystals around his wrist. “I have heard that the bond between mates is very strong. She might recognise us despite wearing this stupid string.”“It should work; It has to.” Kramen shrugged, patting Kain’s back. “That is the only way we can ensure that she doesn’t run away…”  His gaze drifted towards me. “Especially if Keith is the one to find her.”My jaws clenched as the irritation bubbling within me intensified. It had been over ten days since we met our mate. Handing the boarding pass to Kain, I instructed, “Once you land in Canada, get in touch with Alpha Asher. He will help you with the search. Don’t try to do anything on your own.”“Got it, brother.” Kain’s lips curved in a goofy grin. “I won’t go wand

CHAPTER 5
KEITH’S POV My feet came to a staggering halt a few yards away from what looked like an old warehouse. My nose twitched as I analysed the distinct scents that hung thick in the air. The strongest was the musty, moist scent that was usually found around ancient structures.Closing my eyes in concentration, I tried to focus on the other milder ones. There were about twenty completely different werewolf scents. This could mean only one thing. The warehouse was a lair for rogues. But why did Melinda come here? Did she seek their help to stay hidden from us?That thought flared my temper. Stupid girl! She should have known better than to trust rogues.A fresh gust of wind brought with it the scent of freesias making my heart skip a beat. She was still here, but the scent was too mild to figure out the exactly where. My gaze swept around the building. The structure seemed pretty elaborate, for it to be a mere warehouse. It

CHAPTER 6
MELINDA’S POV Grunt, groan, gasp, I sucked in greedily with my mouth wide open, yet the air didn’t seem to reach my lungs. The silver chains dug into my wrist as I squirmed and struggled against them.“Please… I… I can’t breathe.” I rasped in a muffled voice before breaking into a bout of dry cough. The congestion in my chest grew, squeezing my lungs.Sweat trickled down my forehead as I struggled to hold on. My body started burning as if someone had poured smoldering lava into my veins. Soon, my clothes were soaking wet with perspiration. For a while, I felt like I was being burned alive in a furnace. Once that feeling subsided, my body started trembling as if I had caught a chill. My teeth chattered as my body’s temperature dropped drastically.Shuddering with equal parts of cold and agony, I tried to open my eyes. My eyelids fluttered, but I couldn’t open them. Too drained

CHAPTER 7.1
KEITH’S POV “Melinda regained her consciousness. She still seems a bit disturbed, but she did talk to me.” I said to Kain over the call, as I moved along the road in my car.“What about the bruises?”My grip on the steering wheel increased, and I gulped. Biting the inside of my cheek to keep my temper under control, I lied, “They seem to have faded too.”  Kain was the most sensitive amongst us. If he knew Melinda’s actual condition, he wouldn’t be able to think straight and get into trouble.“That is an immense relief. There are no flights for L.A. today, but I will take the first flight tomorrow morning. Clara has given me some effective painkillers and ointments. I am sure they will help.”My jaws clenched as I pursed my lips. Was I some sort of idiot? Consumed by the need for revenge, I didn’t even think about getting medicine for Melinda. My b

CHAPTER 7.2
Carrying Melinda to the bed, I tucked her under the comforter, holding her for a moment to give her some warmth. “Do you feel better now?”My question was met with silence again. Sitting beside her on the bed, I pressed my palm against her forehead; gasping as the heat seeped into my skin. She was burning with fever, but what bothered me even more was her absolute silence despite being conscious.Swallowing the lump that had formed in my throat, I stuttered, “Melinda… will you please say something? My voice became shaky as I continued. “Melinda… please… I can’t see you like this.”My eyes burned with unshed tears as she continued to gape into the space. Helping her to a sitting position, I wrapped my arms around her in a tight embrace. This worked. Slowly, her trembling body relaxed in my arms and she mumbled, “Why did you save me? It would have been nice if I had died….”

My lips spread into a smile as I stretched my arms; gasping as my fingers came into contact with something soft.My jaws hung open and my eyes widened in horror when I saw the man who had saved me lying next to me. Massaging my forehead, I tried to recall what had happened. I had gone to the bathroom to take a shower and those memories…I shook my head, stopping my mind from going down that dark hole again. Chewing my lower lip, I looked at the man’s face. He must have carried me to the bed and taken care of me.My heart fluttered as my gaze drifted over his sharp features, landing on his kissable lips. The moment that thought crossed my mind, I jumped to my feet with a mortified gasp. How could I even think like this?He was hot, good looking and had saved my life, but that didn’t change the fact tha

What in the world do you think you are doing?’ Jake’s voice tore through the haze of anger, frustration, and guilt that consumed me. ‘How can you abandon our mate in the middle of nowhere?’My foot landed on the brakes, and my car came to a screeching halt. A frustrated scream left my lips as I smacked my head on the steering wheel.‘You are my human counter-part. Aren’t you supposed to be calm and sensible?’ Jake chided in an annoyed voice. ‘You know Melinda is emotionally unstable, yet you lost control.’I swallowed hard as my chest congested with a fresh wave of guilt. It was so wrong of me to direct my anger at Melinda.‘Yes, absolutely wrong. Now, go back and apologise before I start mincing your brain. You need to get a hold on yourself, Keith.”With an agonised sigh, I grabbed my phone and checked her location. The
