“You useless human! Can’t you do anything right?” Lila’s shrill voice sliced right through me but what hurt even more was the SLAP that swept across my cheek.
I flinched hard as the stack of books and supplies I was carrying for her crashed to the marble floor. Papers flew everywhere. Students stopped in the hallway, already smirking and whispering.
“I’m sorry, Lila,” I whispered, dropping to my knees to gather everything. My palms stung from the fall. “I didn’t see the step…”
“Didn’t see the step?” Lila laughed, loud and mean. She didn’t even pretend to help. She just crossed her arms, her perfect blonde hair shining, her carriage pompous and arrogant, like she owned the whole academy.
“You never see anything, do you? That’s what happens when you’re just a pathetic human charity case. Father only brought you here because he felt sorry for the orphan he adopted. And this is how you repay him? By embarrassing me in front of everyone?”
Mara, one of her friends, kicked a loose notebook toward me. “Pick it up faster, maid. Or are you too weak even for that?”
My cheeks burned as I scrambled to collect the mess. My knees hurt against the cold floor. I kept my head down, biting my lip so hard I tasted blood. Don’t cry. Don’t let them see your tears. This was not going to be the first time I was in this situation. All they needed was a show of weakness and I will become the talk of the entire academy.
Every single day was like this—Lila’s constant jabs, the reminders that I was nothing but a servant wearing the fake title of “adopted sister.”
“Honestly, Lila, why do you even keep her around?” Mara asked, laughing. “She’s not even a real wolf. Just a human pretending to belong here.”
Lila tossed her hair. “Because Father says I have to. But trust me, the moment she slips up badly enough, she’s gone. Right, Elara? You know your place.”
“Yes,” I muttered, finally stacking the books again. My arms shook under the weight. “I know my place.”
Lila smirked, satisfied for now. “Good. Now hurry up. I have combat theory in ten minutes, and I need my notes perfect.”
I followed her down the hall like a shadow, one step behind. The weight on my shoulders was nothing compared to the heaviness in my chest. Twenty years old, and this was my life—endless service, endless humiliation from my eighteen-year-old adopted sister and if only they knew that…
The screams from the girls coming from ahead broke me out of my trail of thoughts. We hurried forward as the screams got louder; Lila and her friends already giggling as they ran while I struggled to keep up.
That was when I already knew what this was.
It was them.
As we cut through the central courtyard, my breath caught. I had only heard about them. Hell, they hardly ever turned up together in school. They were too up there… too respected… too powerful… they were the seven and all the wolves in the academy called them The God Alphas.
I was just as curious as I peeked through the crowd, struggling to get a view of them. The Seven Alphas were crossing the open space and everyone moved out of their way like they were gods indeed. My heart pounded as I took them in, starting from the edges and moving to the center.
Finnian Crowe at the back; wilderness-hardened and silent, like he could disappear into the trees and hunt you down without a sound.
Then there was Cassian Reed beside him; always calculating, the strategic one who seemed to know everyone’s secrets before they did. At least, so I heard.
Lorcan Vale, with that resentful glare; stealthy and vicious, ready to strike from the shadows, especially against those who challenged his rival. He was a favorite among the women.
Rafe Blackwood flashing his dangerous smile… charming on the surface but a true hunter who toyed with people like prey. He was one they all feared.
Silas Thorne walking with calm grace—sharp eyes missing nothing, always three steps ahead with hidden agendas. Again, based on the chatters from the girls while I wiped Lila’s feet.
Draven Kane coiled like a spring of violence—brutal and quick to break bones over the smallest insult.
That made six. Where was he? The Seventh? The one that most sent shivers down my…
I spotted him just then. For the first time. Before now, I only ever heard of him in gossips but now, he was really here.
At the very center, leading them all… Kairos Vale.
He moved like a storm about to unleash—dark eyes scanning everything with absolute, ruthless authority. The undisputed leader. Terrifying. Untouchable. The one whose presence made the air itself feel heavier.
I quickly looked down, but it was too late. The group slowed slightly as they passed.
Lila straightened instantly, flashing her brightest smile. “Good morning, Kairos. Draven.” Of course, she was a big fan.
Kairos barely glanced at her. His eyes shifted to me for a split second. A strange, electric spark shot through my chest… warm and completely wrong. Suddenly, his expression twisted into pure contempt, like I was dirt on his shoe. Just a pathetic human maid. Nothing more. He turned away.
Draven snorted. “Still dragging your little pet around, Lila?”
Lila laughed nervously. “She’s useful. Sometimes.”
I kept my head down, cheeks on fire. The spark still tingled unpleasantly under my skin even as shame flooded me. Why did looking at him do that?
The Alphas moved on without another word. The second they were far enough away, Lila spun on me.
“Did you see how they looked at you? Like trash. That’s what you are. Don’t ever think you’re anything else.”
I said nothing. I just followed her to class, the books feeling heavier than ever.
Later that evening, after running more errands and enduring more sneering comments from Lila’s friends, I slipped into the small storage room I sometimes used for a moment of peace. I had barely caught my breath when an envelope dropped to my side, nudged from the shelf as I sat behind it. I slowly reached out and opened it up.
Inside was a note in Harlan’s handwriting: Payments received for the girl. Delivered as agreed.
My stomach dropped. Payments? For the girl?
A cold wave of dread washed over me. Before I could even begin to process it, the door to the storage room creaked open.
I gasped.
It was him.
Kairos Vale.
Elara’s POVHis grip was firm enough to stop her completely, and the sudden intervention left Lila staring at him in astonishment. He did not raise his voice or offer an explanation. He simply held her hand away from me, his golden eyes fixed on her with a displeasure that made even Mara take a cautious step backward.“Have you lost your mind?” Kairos asked, releasing Lila only after she stopped struggling. “You have instructors, healers, and half the academy standing here. If you believe Elara committed an offence, let the Elders investigate it. You will not settle the matter by attacking her in front of everyone.” His words were not gentle, and he offered me no reassuring glance afterward.Nevertheless, I could not ignore the fact that he had intervened. The same man who had struck me earlier that day for being the supposed human he did not want had just prevented Lila from doing exactly the same thing.Lila looked from Kairos to me, and her expression changed. The tears remained on
POV: ElaraI barely heard anyone around me. I was still trying to understand what had happened to me.A moment ago, I had been carrying Lila’s belongings, wishing I could disappear before anyone noticed me. Now I stood in the middle of the training ground with silver light fading from my skin, surrounded by hundreds of werewolves who looked at me as though I was something that shouldn’t exist. My arms trembled when I tried to move them, and the strange strength that had filled my body was already slipping away, leaving me weak and confused. I wanted someone to explain what I had done, but the one person who might have understood was glaring at me with an expression I could not read.Lila broke the silence before anyone else could speak. She stumbled backward, clutching her chest, and let out a scream that drew everyone's attention away from the shattered orb.“She tried to kill me! Did you all see that? Elara attacked me!” Her voice cracked as she pointed at me, and within seconds, te
With all teachers and students now present at the Academy, a final event was held, the grandest of them all. The Academy grounds had transformed into a spectacle.Banners came undone in the wind as nearly every student and faculty member gathered for the Grand Training Demonstration which was a grand welcome to mark the full resumption of classes. It was literally everyone. The Academy was more crowded than ever. Everything was just getting started. The Seven God Alphas sat in the raised viewing box like gods among mortals, their presence alone enough to command silence. Lila and her clique occupied prime seats near the front, having all the fun. Lecturers, including Professors Thorne and Elowen, took another block around the arena. As for me, I always knew where I belonged. I lingered in the background as Lila’s attendant, arms loaded with her supplies—water skins, extra weapons wraps, and towels. Invisible. A ghost in plain sight. The President of the Academy, an imposing Elder name
Did I truly have my mind on the training I was spearheading or was my mind truly on the human girl?I stood on the elevated platform overlooking the elite training grounds, arms crossed as the morning sun beat down on the wolves below. Drills were in full swing and my wolf, Klyrax, stirred restlessly beneath my skin, always hungry for the fight.“Again!” I barked. “You call that a formation? The Devourer would tear through that without hesitation.”Of course, the entire point of the Academy and the insistent training of all werewolves by the Elders was to ensure we were ready for the coming of the Devourer. No one knew what shape it will take or when it would come to be. It was just a prophesy for now but when he did come, we were going to be ready.Draven, one of the Seven, lunged forward in the spar, his aggressive posturing on full display as he overpowered a younger elite.“This is how it’s done, Kairos. Real strength. Not whatever games the others are playing.” His eyes flicked t
With each day, the pressure of Lila’s unrelenting show of viciousness grew tighter around my neck. But I was grateful activities had finally begun in the Alpha Academy. The teachers and lecturers had come around, dressed in their old-fashioned wears, men and women carrying themselves with pride. All species of werewolves while of course, I remained the only human.I kept my head down, clutching my worn notebook like a shield, as I navigated the crowded corridors, rushing towards class knowing I could be late in tendering to Lila or punished for being too far when the entirety of me being here was to watch after her.Professor Thorne, a grizzled werewolf with scars crisscrossing his arms, stood at the front of the Combat Theory lecture hall, his voice booming.“In battle, strength isn’t just in your claws—it’s in your mind. Anticipate your enemy’s move before they strike.”Beside him, Professor Elowen, elegant and sharp-tongued, taught the finer points of pack strategy, her eyes scanni
Kairos Vale stood in the doorway, his tall frame filling the space, dark eyes narrowing on me, dark, void of any feeling or expression. He remained quiet and that was what made it scarier. The storage room suddenly felt too small, too intimate. My safe space. The one place I had been sneaking into for weeks because no one ever used it.But it wasn’t mine. It was his.My heart slammed against my ribs as the realization dawned on me. Since we had resumed at the Academy, the only reason I had thought the storage room was empty and desolate was because Kairos was yet to resume alongside the rest of the seven as well. The electric spark from earlier flared again, hotter this time, mixing with pure terror. I could feel it in my chest, something I could not explain. I backed up instinctively, clutching the note to my chest.I heard Kairos groan weakly, a slight deep moan as he steadied himself, his hand to his chest.“W-what are you doing here?” I stammered, voice barely above a whisper.Kai
