Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
"Do whatever you want!" Rachel Jackman snapped, anger and impatience clear in her voice. "Just don't regret it and come crying back to beg me!"

The call was abruptly cut off the next second.

Would I regret it? Never.

The only thing I regretted was being so foolish back then. I hated that I had let myself, once a decisive force in the business world, put up with years of humiliation.

-

I was packing my things when Charlie Stewart walked in.

He was Rachel's current assistant, and he was also the man she had once loved most.

"Zander, I'm sorry. I went to your house that day to deliver some documents to Ms. Jackman," he said. "She noticed the stubble on my chin and borrowed one of your razor blades for me.

"I never thought it would make you misunderstand. Please don't divorce her. Otherwise, I'll never clear my name."

I listened to his half-hearted apology, and my lips curled up into a mocking smile.

"If I don't divorce her, how would I make room for you?" I asked.

Charlie's tone turned anxious. "Zander, how could you say that? I never wanted to come between you and Ms. Jackman. I–"

I cut him off. "You never wanted to, or you can't?"

Back then, the Jackmans chose a husband for Rachel from the sons of Belmont's elite families. Charlie, the Stewarts' illegitimate son, was the first one they ruled out.

Seven years later, the Stewart family had long gone bankrupt. When Charlie came back from overseas, the only way he could get close to Rachel was as her assistant.

Charlie sounded even more anxious. "If you don't believe me, then I'll just quit. That should be enough, right?"

"Do whatever you want!" I threw Rachel's words back at him, then turned away and ignored him.

In the two years since Charlie joined the company, I had asked Rachel for a divorce as many times as he had threatened to quit.

Now that Rachel and I were really getting a divorce, he was still using the same trick to win sympathy.

Rachel had long grown tired of my jealousy, yet she still fell for every one of his innocent acts.

"Zander, I'm begging you. Please don't leave. Don't divorce Ms. Jackman." He looked ready to cry as he grabbed my arm and shook it, acting like the heartbroken hero of some melodrama.

"Zander, hit me if it will make you feel better." As he spoke, he grabbed my hand and pulled it toward his face.

I frowned at his pathetic act and silently counted down. "Ten, nine, eight…"

Before I reached seven, Rachel rushed over. "Stop!"

She shouted angrily at me, "Zander, you've gone too far! Charlie was our classmate. How could you hit him?"

Just like every other time, Rachel showed up at the perfect moment and blamed me without asking what had happened.

I shook my head and smiled bitterly. She had perfected her act of rushing to Charlie's defense.

I set my luggage down and slowly got to my feet.

I turned to Rachel first and said, "If you can't see what's right in front of you, maybe you should get your eyes checked.

"Hit him? I wouldn't want to dirty my hands."

"You…" My words left her speechless.

Then I turned to Charlie. "If I remember right, I never heard a knock, and I never got up to open the door."

I looked him straight in the eye. "So tell me. How did you get in?"

His face turned pale, and he almost lost his balance. A slender arm caught him around the waist.

I looked up at Teresa and Rachel. I said, "I don't collect trash. Don't expect me to take her back."Let me make myself clear one last time. I, Zander Jepsen, will never forgive anyone who betrays me."Teresa finally understood how Rachel felt. She never expected me to be this stubborn or so unwilling to compromise. So she stopped pretending and looked at me arrogantly. "Zander, you're still young. You act too much on emotion. I won't waste my breath on you. I'll talk to your mother." With that, she turned and headed toward the room.Just as I was about to call for the bodyguards, the door opened. My mom came out in her wheelchair.Rachel's and Teresa's eyes lit up at the sight of her. Just as they were about to speak, my mom stopped them."Don't bother. I don't want to hear it," my mom said. "I came out to tell you that Zander has full control over the Jepsen family now. Whatever decision he makes, his father and I will support him."After saying that, my mom left in her whe

"If you ask me, you should go beg your husband for forgiveness while the company can still be saved. Otherwise, we'll all go down with you," one of Rachel's relatives chimed in."Exactly. I really don't see what's so special about that assistant. He's nothing compared to Mr. Jepsen, yet you're completely taken in by him."Rachel's face turned bright red. She clenched her fists but didn't dare argue back.Teresa couldn't take it anymore. She raised her hand and slapped Rachel. "You ungrateful brat. Look at the mess you've made!"You're coming with me right now to apologize to the Jepsens. And call HR. Get rid of that assistant of yours right now!"Without giving Rachel a chance to refuse, Teresa forced her to fire Charlie and dragged her out by the wrist.-Meanwhile, at the hospital, Charlie sat on the edge of the bed with his head wrapped in bandages. He looked furious. He never expected that the old woman who had fainted at the photo studio yesterday was actually the CEO of J

Rachel frowned even harder. She couldn't believe I was going after an assistant like Charlie, and she blamed herself for dragging him into this mess. She steadied herself and said gently, "Charlie, don't worry. I'm on my way."Halfway there, her phone rang again."Get back to the family estate right now!"Teresa Jackman, Rachel's mother, sounded furious. Startled, Rachel turned the car around and headed for Jackman Estate.-Almost everyone in the Jackman family was there. They all glared at her, especially the younger members of Rachel's generation.Rachel had never stood out among the other heirs. On top of being born out of wedlock, she never had any real chance of inheriting Jackman Group. It was only because I agreed to marry her that she became the company's CEO. And with my family's support, she was able to keep that position for so long.Rachel grew even more uneasy and was about to speak."You ungrateful brat! What have you done?" Teresa barked, dragging her in front

Charlie wrote in another post: [I messed up a deal today. Good thing my boss didn't blame me. She even took me on a trip to cheer me up. #blessed]-There were countless posts like that. And every one of Charlie's happy moments happened on either my wedding anniversary or my birthday. Before long, they filled almost every day of my marriage.Rachel finally snapped. She lifted her chin and said, "Charlie and I are innocent. You're the one with the dirty mind. That's why you see everything that way!"The moment I heard her say they were innocent, I laughed."You knew he wanted you, yet you never kept your distance. You even let him provoke me time and again, even though I was your husband," I said."Just because you haven't ended up in bed with him yet, you think you can shamelessly claim you never cheated?"Rachel, I never thought I would see someone be this shameless!"Rachel's expression visibly fell, and she snapped in anger. "If you don't believe me, then there's nothing mo

Rachel ignored my pain and pressed the hairpin into my hand even harder. She warned me, "Zander, release him! Otherwise, there's no fixing this between you two."I couldn't help but laugh coldly again. Even now, she still thought I would regret all of this and come crawling back.I had wanted us to part on good terms for the sake of everything we had shared. Now, there was only one way this would end.Behind me, Mom suddenly opened her eyes and looked toward me. Without warning, she coughed up a mouthful of blood."Mom!" I shouted. A chill ran through my body."Rachel, you've crossed the line!" I yelled. "I won't rest until I make you and that scum pay!"Gritting my teeth, I grabbed Charlie by the hair and yanked with all my strength. There was a sickening tear.He stared at the clump of hair with the scalp still attached in my hand. He let out a scream before passing out, and Rachel was thrown to the floor as well. Then I caught up to my mother's gurney and ran alongside i

"Seriously. You must really love money to kiss someone like her," Charlie said. From his words alone, my mom had already figured out who he was. She knew he was the third wheel who had come between Rachel and me.She struggled to her feet to defend me, but the movement made the pain flare up, and she fell back onto the couch.Seeing the pain in my mother's face, I rushed over and slapped him.A sharp crack filled the room. "Watch your mouth!" I shouted. "She's my mother!"Shocked flashed across Charlie's face before it turned into a sneer."If you really had such an impressive background, how could I have bullied you that badly back then? All I had to do was apologize, and that was the end of it," he said."Zander, just admit it. Without Rachel, you're nothing!" he added.Rachel never told him the truth about how she had helped him back then. She also kept my family background a secret. She had no idea that her attempt to protect her first love's pride would be the very reas
