Isabella Monroe

“My parents died in that fire. Sometimes I think a part of me died with them.”

Smoke burned my lungs before I even opened my eyes.

Firefighters barely pulled me out while flames swallowed my room whole.

Even now, every time I close my eyes, I still see my parents disappearing through the fire.

I haven’t been the same since that night.

Professor Johnson’s sharp voice cut through the lecture hall.

"Miss Monroe, are you with us or somewhere else?"

My eyes lifted to her. "Sorry, ma’am. Wasn’t listening."

Her lips twisted instantly. "Fourth time I’ve warned you. Keep acting like this and you’ll fail."

A vein pulsed in her neck while her glasses shifted slightly on her nose.

"Get out."

Fear?

Yeah. Didn’t exist.

"No need to get so angry, Professor Johnson. I’ll leave before your glasses crack."

A few whispers spread around the room while I grabbed my bag.

Right before I reached the door, her voice stopped me again.

"Having someone like you in this university is embarrassing. You respect nobody."

A smile pulled at my lips.

"And your existence won’t be much of a loss either."

Gasps followed me outside.

God.

People here act like scared little robots.

The smell of coffee filled the café while lecture notes sat spread across the table. My black coffee stayed untouched beside them.

Sophia’s hand landed on my shoulder.

"That bitch kicked you out again?"

A small smile escaped me.

No matter what happened, Sophia stayed beside me.

We met years ago when she used to visit the orphanage with her father, Mr. Sebastian. Somewhere between stupid conversations and childish games, she became family.

After my parents died, my relatives threw me away like extra baggage nobody wanted. Mr. Sebastian handled everything after that. School. Food. Tuition.

Everything.

Still, after I turned seventeen, he stopped visiting.

Now I’m twenty-two, studying psychiatry at the National Medical College.

The coffee cup spun slowly between my fingers.

"That old woman lives to embarrass me."

Across from me, Sophia fixed her collar with an annoyed look.

"I’ll tell Dad about her. Seriously, this isn’t the first time she’s thrown you out."

A quick shake of my head stopped her.

"No. Your dad’s already done enough for me."

Her expression changed immediately.

"Oh, by the way, Dad’s traveling today to inspect the new hospital construction."

Yeah.

That tone meant trouble.

"And what exactly are you planning?"

A grin spread across her face.

"We’re going back to our holy place."

God.

A groan left me. "Sophia, I don’t wanna smoke again."

"You won’t. Promise. Just say yes."

Silence stretched for a second.

Then the defeat was won.

"Fine. I can never refuse you."

Excitement practically threw her out of the chair.

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

"Relax. We’re gonna get kicked out too."

She pushed her short hair behind her ear dramatically.

"Nobody would dare because I’m…"

Eyes closed for effect.

"The daughter of Doctor Sebastian."

That sent both of us into laughter.

Not long later, we were driving toward my apartment.

"I’m still underage," Sophia complained. "My mother acts like breathing should be illegal."

"Mrs. Cassandra is strict, yeah, but she wants what’s best for you. And smoking sucks. Tried it. Hated it."

An annoyed sound came from her.

"You don’t get it, Isabella. Her controlling behavior ruined everything. That’s why Dad left her."

For a second, my mind drifted.

Five years ago.

Sophia was crying so hard over the phone that I could barely understand her while she told me her parents were divorcing.

She was seventeen back then.

"Doesn’t matter anymore," her voice pulled me back. "I’m leaving that house soon anyway."

Apartment keys clicked softly in my hand.

"Nine months left."

A grin spread across her face instantly.

"And then I’m finally free. I swear, I’m entering every nightclub I see."

By evening, we headed to our usual place.

Every Thursday night, that hidden club became our escape.

Teenagers. College students. Loud music. Alcohol everywhere.

Sophia still had a few months before turning twenty-two.

Unlike me.

Mine passed two months ago.

The tight dress hugging my body looked nothing like the cold quiet image people had of me.

Funny, honestly.

People only see what you let them see.

Pink lipstick finished the look while Sophia pulled on her long leather boots.

"Damn… how are you this hot?"

Laughter mixed with perfume while I helped button her dress.

"If I were a guy, you’d be in trouble."

The back of her head earned a quick smack.

"God, you’re disgusting."

Her car stopped outside the nightclub later that night.

From outside, the place looked harmless. Just another small café in a rich neighborhood.

Inside?

Different world.

Music blasted through the walls. Smoke filled the air. Drunk people stumbled everywhere.

The craving hit immediately.

God.

"Sophia… do you have my lighter?"

Shock crossed her face.

"Seriously? This morning you said you were quitting."

Frustration tightened my jaw.

"Fine. I won’t smoke."

Wine poured into her glass while sarcasm filled her voice.

"If my mother saw us now, we’d both die."

That familiar sentence echoed in my head instantly.

"Didn’t I warn you about that girl?"

Sophia laughed loudly.

"You’re my favorite kind of trouble."

Less than an hour later, she could barely stand.

One arm wrapped around my shoulders while I dragged her outside.

Cold air hit my face hard enough to clear my head a little.

"Are we going back to your apartment?"

Her head shook violently.

"No. Home. Mom and Dad are coming back tomorrow, and if they don’t find me there, I’m dead."

A tired sigh stayed trapped in my chest while I changed direction toward the Sebastian mansion.

Almost two years.

That’s how long it had been since my last visit.

Tonight, maybe I’d finally see Mr. Sebastian again.

The only man who ever treated me like I mattered.

Isabella MonroeI smiled, moving my eyes away from Sebastian, before getting up and heading to the kitchen that opened onto the sitting area where he was. I started preparing what I had told him about, when a question I had never asked him before crossed my mind..."Can you answer a question that has been confusing me these days, Mr. Sebastian?" I asked. He ran his index finger along the bridge of his nose. "Depends on the question."I took what I needed from the refrigerator and faced his relaxed expression."What was the nature of your relationship with my father? Honestly, saying he was your friend didn't satisfy my curiosity."His black pupil shifted toward me before returning to the television."He was a friend of mine. Isn't that a clear answer?"While cutting chicken slices attentively, I nearly cut my finger with the sharp knife. I noticed at the last second."But we're middle class and you're from a wealthy family. How did the two of you even meet? Isn't that strange?"He cal

Isabella Monroe"And what did that liar say?" Sebastian said it with interest clear on his lips as he tried to read my thoughts.I closed my study bag and began weaving my words, telling him everything I carried inside me, the worries that had been added to my shoulders on top of my own problems."That you're a sadistic man, and that the two of you sleep together twice a week."He chuckled softly while touching the place of his wound."And like a little girl, you believed what she told you! That manipulative woman is good at acting, Isabella."I picked up one cage in my hands and walked toward the other, but he stopped me and carried it instead."Good grief! How can a psychiatrist be sadistic! Leaving aside the sleeping together part, I'm a man. I need space to release my urges and desires, willingly!"I stared into his pupils, which remained fixed on my eyes as proof of his honesty."You're telling the truth! It wasn't enough that she's a whore, she added lying to her list of filth t

I noticed it from the displeased look on his face and the way he moved his neck with difficulty.A secret smile spread across my lips, but I did not show it. I maintained my calm and composure in front of them.He sat beside me, leaning heavily against the couch, rubbing his forehead in exhaustion."As soon as I arrived at the apartment, I heard a loud scream from her, so I knew something was happening inside. Fortunately, that idiot left the door partly open. When I pushed it open, I found him raising a knife. He was about to attack her with it."The officer's expression hardened further."When he heard my voice, he couldn't take another step. I took advantage of his shock to pull him away from her. I hit him, and he deserved far more than that."His fist tightened over his thigh."If it weren't for the law, I would have killed hi

Isabella MonroeThe door was torn off its hinges. My eyes stayed fixed in a steady focus. I could see countless birds chirping around my head and endless hallucinations. I saw things others could not see—bugs, animals, events passing like the reel of my life at the moment of death, and no one knew except me... The echo of multiplying voices inside my mind and soul never ceased."Touch her and you'll die."Samuel turned toward the doorway to see Mr. Sebastian standing there with one arm folded across his chest. He did not hesitate to punch him in the face, sending him collapsing onto the floor, drifting into unconsciousness from the blow I had given him with the vase and the force of the professor's punch. All of it happened before my cold eyes and wide smile that twitched from time to time in response to the conflicts raging inside me."You think she's alone and no one can protect her! Fate failed you this time, didn't it? You dared to target the wrong person."Kicks rained down on hi

I knew it was that despicable criminal. He removed his mask, laughing like a devil king ruling over a tribe of demons."Your nightmare, you whore."I planted my hands on the floor to stand and face him, but he shoved me with his foot, sending me crashing down again."You think you'll get away with what you did? Did you forget what you and that bastard did to me that day? You thought I'd forget too."My body was slowly falling apart, fear flowing through my veins like blood, but I wasn't in a position where I could show weakness. Isabella Monroe After a thirty-minute drive, I arrived at the neighborhood where I lived. It was somewhat far from Mr. Sebastian's residence. I stopped in front of Aunt Helen's shop. She had just stepped outside, her brows drawn together as she wondered who owned such a luxurious car. Her expression quickly relaxed when she saw me getting out of it."Isabella, my little girl!"I opened my arms and hugged her with a smile."Aunt Helen, I'm back."She glanced at the car parked behind me."Where did you get such an expensive car? Don't tell me you're in the mafia."I burst out laughing at her strange conclusion."Auntie, this car isn't mine. It belongs to my friend's father."She sighed in relief with a smile, took my hand, and pulled me inside. The first thing that caught my attention was my two birds, Sam and Susan."It seems the little ones have gotten used to living with you here."She walked over to them, picked up the cage, and brought it back to me."I took good care of them so y
