Mark’s POV

Mark stood in front of the mirror in his room, trying to fix his tie for the third time. He hated mornings like this. His head still felt heavy from the night before, and his body carried that dull ache that came from stress, anger and useless sex. He could not stop thinking about Iris, and that alone was enough to ruin the start of his day.

He buttoned his shirt and reached for the suit jacket hanging on the chair. He slipped it on and checked himself again. He looked like a man with a plan. A man with power ahead of him. But deep down, he felt like a mess that refused to stay hidden.

He was about to grab his watch when the door opened. No knock. No warning. Veronica walked in like she owned the place, which technically she did. The house was under both their names. She stood at the door dressed for work, hair in soft waves, her perfume reaching him before her voice.

He turned his head slowly and let out a dry chuckle.

“You know,” he said, “normal people knock before enter

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 31 – The Wrong Answer

Dante’s POV By the time Dante got back to one of his safe houses, the pain in his shoulder had settled into something dull and manageable. It wasn’t the pain that bothered him. It was the unanswered question sitting in his head, refusing to stay quiet. Someone had tried to kill him. Not carelessly or even emotionally. But cleanly. That meant planning. Money. Information. He stepped inside the house and locked the door behind him, dropping his jacket on the chair by the wall. The room was a bit dark due to the window blinds that hasn’t been adjusted. It was also quiet, and felt familiar. One of the few places where he could think without interruption but ever since he married Iris, he had maintained staying at the penthouse because of her. His phone buzzed, and he answered it. “Where are you?” Luca asked. “Safe,” Dante replied. “Where are you?” “On my way. Ten minutes.” “Good,” Dante said. “Bring Marco.” There was a pause. “That bad?” “Yes.” He ended the call and moved to t

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 30– Open Season

Dante’s POVDante left the building without looking back. He actually didn’t need to.Whatever he had gone there to say had died the moment Iris walked past him and told him not to speak. He stepped into his car with his face locked in its usual calm, the kind that fooled people into thinking nothing ever touched him.The door shut, and he started the engine. He had come alone, thus he didn’t hesitate to drive off.Iris’s face kept pushing its way back into his thoughts, the way her mouth had trembled when she told him not to cross the line, the way she had walked away before he could explain himself. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel and forced his focus back to the road. Feelings had no place here. He reminded himself of that as he always did. Feelings were weaknesses, and weaknesses got men like him killed. That was when his instincts flared. The car ahead of him slowed, not abruptly, but just enough to feel wrong. At the same time, another vehicle slipped into his side m

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 29 – Misplaced Territory

Dante’s POVDante hadn’t planned to come to the firm like this.If he was being honest with himself, he hadn’t planned to come at all.For days, he had been deliberate about staying away from Iris. Not because he didn’t want her. That was the problem. Wanting her had started to feel like a weakness, and Dante Moretti did not survive by entertaining weaknesses. He had been distant on purpose. Cold on purpose. Avoidant because he needed control over something before it controlled him.Feelings made men stupid. Men like him didn’t get the luxury of stupidity.Still, when he heard Mark was there, inside Iris’s office, something ugly stirred in his chest. He didn’t panic. Neither did he want to die of jealousy. But then it was something darker. Something territorial. That was his wife. On paper or not.He pushed the door open without knocking.Mark was standing too close to Iris’s desk.Too comfortable.Too familiar.Dante’s eyes went to Iris first. She was standing, tense, her jaw set, her

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 28 – Uncrossed Lines

Iris’ POVPreviously Iris had been staring at her screen for almost ten minutes without reading a single word. The document in front of her was open, the cursor blinking patiently, but her mind was somewhere else entirely. It had been there since morning. Since the image refused to leave her head. The shirt.Dark blue. Faded around the collar. Slight tear at the sleeve seam. She knew that shirt and she knew it too well.Eleven years ago, her father had owned one just like it. Not similar. Not close. The exact same one. She remembered because she used to tease him about it, telling him he wore it too often. She remembered how it smelled faintly of cologne. She remembered folding it after laundry when she was still young enough to think her family was unbreakable. And now, one of Dante’s men had barged into her room wearing it.When he rushed in earlier to check on her with a heavy breath and two eyes at alert, she noticed it immediately. Her heart had skipped before she could stop it

  • DARING THE MAFIA DON MR DANTE   Chapter 27 – Control

Mark’s POVThree days passed after the incident in the car, and the house had remained cold since then.Mark noticed it in the way Veronica moved around him like he was furniture. In the way she spoke to the staff but barely spoke to him. In the way she slept on the far edge of the bed, her back always turned to him, like she was daring him to touch her and prove her wrong. But then he didn't try.He let the silence sit. Let it go beyond. Let it remind him of what he was dealing with.On the third morning, Mark stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the cuff of his shirt. His reflection stared back at him with a face that looked calm enough, but his eyes told a different story. He looked like a man who was tired of pretending, tired of bending, tired of owing people explanations. But he still had to do it.Not because he felt bad or because he was sorry. But because he needed control. He walked into the bedroom where Veronica was sitting at her vanity, applying lotion to her hands wi

Iris’ POVIris fell asleep because she had no other choice. Her body was tired. Her head hurt. Her chest felt heavy in a way she didn’t want to think about. Lying awake would only make it worse, so she forced herself to rest. She lay on her side, facing the wall, staring at nothing.Earlier, she had told herself she didn’t care. She had acted like Dante’s words didn’t get to her. Like the way he’d spoken, cold, distant, careless… meant nothing. But when the room went quiet and she was left alone with her thoughts, she felt it.One tear slipped out.She noticed it immediately and wiped it away, annoyed with herself. She hated crying. She hated feeling small. She hated feeling like she wanted something she had no right to want. She shut her eyes tighter.Sleep came anyway.*****Flashback, Eleven Years AgoShe was little again. Not the way she remembered herself in pictures, but the way her body felt. Short. Weak. Easy to miss.It was night. She knew that much right away. The air was co
