The doorbell rang.
It was that kind of continuous ringing that always got on my nerves and made me wonder if the person on the other side had no manners.
“Who is it” I said walking to the door but the ringing just continued.
I pulled the door open and my eyes widened when I saw my parents.
“Mum… Dad? When did you get back—?”
Before I could finish, my father’s hand was across my face. The slap was so hard that it sent my head to the side. I tasted the metallic taste of my blood from my teeth biting into my cheek.
“You wicked girl! How dare you push Bree down the stairs?” His voice thundered, echoing around the living room.
I stumbled back, my cheek burning, shock paralyzing me for a second.
It wasn’t me.
It was Bree.
She was the one who had shoved me, the one who had made me fall down the stairs. But no one believed me.
Not my father. Not my mother.
The reality of that sent an awful feeling through me.
“I did not—she was the one that—” I tried to explain, my voice shaking.
But before I could finish, his hand lifted again, heavy and threatening. I flinched instinctively.
“Still lying, huh?” he spat.
I swallowed hard, forcing the tears that threatened to fall to stay put… I would not give them more against me.
Then my mother’s voice cut through the room, it was softer, but it still carried the same malice.
“Anika… what will it take for you to just be kind to your sister, huh?”
I glanced at her, trying to meet her eyes, but all I saw was disappointment.
“I won’t apologize because I did nothing wrong,” I said, arms folding tight across my chest, as if the gesture could shield me from their cruelty.
Their looks didn’t soften.
My chest tightened.
I wanted to scream but I knew that was futile.
“I did not—” I started again, voice trembling.
But Simon walked in before I could finish, his presence filling the entire room.
“What is going on here?” he asked, his tone even, but his eyes moving between me to my parents.
I know it was stupid but a small part of me felt a flicker of hope. Maybe this time he would defend me, maybe he couldn’t take my sisters side.
Maybe for once he’d realize I wasn’t the villain here.
I was wrong, because none of that happened.
A small, stupid part of me had imagined him turning to my parents and saying, she’s telling the truth.
Instead, he glanced at me briefly, then sighed.
“Just apologize, Anika… don’t be stubborn,” he said.
The words hit me like a punch.
I froze for a moment, the blood draining from my face.
No one was listening to me.
I had already lost my baby, but no one seemed to care. Apparently, Bree’s scratch was a lot more important than the life that was insider of me.
I could feel tears forcing their way through my eyelids faster.
“Forget it,” I whispered, voice breaking, and without another word, I turned walked away ignoring those calling my name.
I slammed the door behind me.
My breathing was quick and uneven, it felt like the whole world was closing in on me.
I was done.
I sank onto my bed, hands trembling as I dialed his number, the digits etched into my memory like a lifeline.
The phone rang, each tone stretching into an eternity, and just when I thought I was going to lose my mind, he finally picked up.
“Hello” his voice deep and rumbling was like a voice of fresh air.
I sniffed “Liam does your offer still stand?”
Liam was my childhood best friend, he was also the man that I rejected just so I could be with Simon, and looking back at it now, maybe I had made a mistake.
I remembered how angry I was when Liam told me that I would regret it, choosing Simon over him and I actually cut him off.
Now he was the one I was running back to, he was still here.
“I told you I would wait for you, no matter how long it took” his voice was
I blinked back tears, letting my fingers tremble over the phone.
“Good,” I whispered, trying to steady my voice. My chest heaved as I wiped the tears off my cheeks. “Give me seven days. Then come pick me up.”
The line went silent for a moment, then a soft chuckle on the other end made my chest tighten.
“I’ll be there,” he said. “Seven days. No more, no less.”
I hung up slowly, staring at the phone like it was the only thing that was keeping me grounded. This was it.
I was finally breaking free from this toxic cycle.
Seven days.
That was all I needed.
Seven days to make sure that I had properly divorced Simon and finished everything that was still holding me back here. Seven days until o was gone and none of them would ever see me again.
I thought about everything that I had been through, my marriage that seemed worthless to Simon. He could come home still smelling like alcohol after he had spent a night with my own sister.
I thought about Bree, everyone thought she was so perfect, but I knew the truth, she was not good at all and she hated me for knowing, she hated me for seeing through her bullshit.
I leaned back on my bed, hands clutching the sheets, heart pounding in my chest.
I wiped my eyes again, this time more firmly, there was no use crying over spilt milk.
Seven days.
I could survive seven days.
Outside, I could hear faint murmurs. They were still talking about me, I just knew it.
I clenched my jaw.
Let them talk. Let them believe what they wanted.
In seven days, none of that would matter.
I would be gone.
Free.
My phone buzzed and I looked down at the message;
Liam: I can’t wait to see you
I didn’t believe that I was actually doing this, but here I was…
There was no going back.
ANIKA’S POVI glared so hard at Simon that if gazes could actually kill, he might as well be six feet under. But unfortunately, the eyes were not yet evolved to be that lethal. He glared at Liam who still had his arms around me.This was actually so laughable that I couldn’t even stop the scoff that escaped my lips.I mean the gall of this man, to actually come to my place of residence.“You really know that you are trespassing here. I mean I really should call the cops on you. Maybe you can find a great spot right next to Bree,” I said.He gulped.“About that, I need you to have her released,” he said.I laughed. Then I turned to Liam.“He is actually making demands.”Liam squeezed my hand before glaring at Simon.“I am going to need you to leave,” he said coldly.Simon ran a hand through his hair.“Bree is not like the rest of us. She is weak and her heart...”I cut him off immediately.“I am going to need you to shut up here Simon. You should have kept your woman in check when she
ANIKA’S POV“Baby?”I snuggled deeper into the warm hands that held me.Liam had insisted on babying me through my injuries. Hell, Liam always babied me, and at this point I feared that I was quickly getting spoiled. Not like I was hating that fact whatsoever. It was blissful here, just being Liam’s spoiled little baby.“Yes, Mr. Danson,” I said teasingly. He ran a hand through my hair, caressing my scalp softly and playing with my curls.I could not stop the pleased sound that escaped my lips. This man had magic fingers, so I was not at fault for enjoying it.“Your hair is getting longer these days,” he said, twisting the end of one curl around his finger.I turned to look at him.“Don’t you like it?”His eyes widened immediately.“Angel.”“What?”“You can’t seriously be asking me that”I tried and failed to hide my smile.Liam shook his head before bending down and pressing a soft kiss against my lips.“Angel, you look good in anything.”“Liam…”“Seriously,” he continued. “You could
ANIKA’S POVThe first thing that caught my attention was the smell.Smoke.It was unmistakable, the way it crawled into my nose, choking me.“What is that?”My heart slammed against my ribs so hard that it felt like it was trying to break free from my chest. For one second, I sat frozen in my office chair, staring at the sketch in front of me.Then panic took over.I was on immediate alert the second that my nose picked up the smell of smoke. I mean this was a clothes production factory, how on earth could there possibly be a fire?I was up before I had the mind to calm down and think about it.The second that I stepped outside my office, my worst fears were confirmed. There was fire everywhere.Orange flames engulfed the fabric, consuming everything in its path. Thick black smoke filled the air. There were screams, everyone was scampering for safety.“Miss Anika, watch out!”Someone grabbed my arm just as a burning piece of wood crashed to the ground inches away from me.I released m
SIMON’S POVThe television screen hanging in the corner of the bar was blurry.Or maybe that was just my vision.Fuck, at this point, I honestly could not tell the difference.“Another one,” I slurred, banging my empty glass against the counter hard enough that amber liquid from someone else’s drink splashed onto my sleeve. The bartender, a young guy with tattoos crawling up both arms, looked at me with the kind of exhausted expression that said he regretted showing up to work today.“Sir, I think you’ve had enough.”I barked out a laugh so loud that a couple sitting three stools away flinched.“Enough?” I repeated. “You think this is enough?”I pointed to the line of empty glasses in front of me.“This is not enough.”My tongue felt too heavy in my mouth, my thoughts swimming around like fish in a muddy pond.Anika was gone.I just wanted to drink until I disappear. “Another drink,” I demanded, sliding a wad of cash across the counter. “Keep them coming.”The bartender pushed the mo
LIAM’S POVAll the nervousness that I felt just completely vanished the second that I had Anika in my arms. The soft scent of her hair attacking all of my senses all at once. I let it, I wanted it to…. So damn much.It took so much from me to not reply to her texts all day.It felt like torture, stopping myself from reacting to every single vibration of my phone. But I wanted to surprise her.Today, I was going to propose to Anika again.I hope she would say yes.Not because she was forced to.Or because she had any guilt towards me, or that she felt like she owed me in any way.But I wanted her to say yes to me because she loved me… and because she wanted to start a life with me.I tightened my grip on her hand for a second, grounding myself in the fact that she was really here.Real.And so mine.I offered a hand to her.“Come on babe.”She slipped her hand into mine and allowed me to lead her towards the table.“Such a gentleman,” she said, teasing softly.I smirked. “Only for you.
ANIKA’S POVI was lounging in the living room, trying and failing to relax while watching Off Campus.I kept shifting on the couch, muttering to myself, “Okay Anika, breathe, he said he was working late.”Still, I had sent at least fifty messages to Liam, and not a single reply had come through. I frowned at my phone. This was unlike him.I mean he was the reason I was this restless in the first place.Ever since what happened, Liam had insisted on total rest.I had to stay at home, all day every day without working and honestly, I was losing my mind. And now, here I was, staring at my phone like it had personally offended meWas he busy, or just flat out ignoring me?And I hate to be a brat complaining about nothing, and I definitely trusted Liam, but…Damn, he was supposed to be obsessed with me, wasn’t he? Not replying is driving me crazy.I tossed my phone onto the couch and groaned into a pillow.“This is ridiculous,” I muttered to myself, flipping the TV channel again to someth
