DID I… DID WE?

SIMON’S POV

My head felt like someone had taken a hammer and was hitting my head continuously without stopping.

It kept on banging over and over again the longer I tried to keep my eyes closed.

What had I done that made me have such a horrible headache? No to be dramatic but my head was aching me so much that it even hurt to breathe.

I groaned and shifted slightly on the bed, trying to ignore the pounding in my skull.

That was when I realized two things.

First… I was half naked.

Second… someone was lying on my chest.

My eyes snapped open immediately.

For a moment everything was blurry, the room spinning slightly and my mouth had a bitter aftertaste of alcohol.

Then my vision cleared.

And my stomach dropped.

Bree.

She was sleeping peacefully on my chest, her hair spread across my shoulder, one arm draped over my stomach like she had every right to be there.

My eyes widened.

What the hell?

I looked down at myself again just to be sure.

I was just in boxers.

Then at her.

The blanket barely covered her body and from what I could see…

She was also half naked.

My brain stalled for a moment trying to recall.

“Did I…” I muttered under my breath.

The movement must have woken her because Bree stirred slightly before opening her eyes.

She blinked up at me slowly.

Then she smiled.

“Good morning.”

Her voice was soft.

I sat up slightly which made her slide down against the pillow.

My heart was suddenly beating faster than it should have.

I pointed between the both of us.

“Did I… did we?”

The words felt strange leaving my mouth.

Bree’s expression changed instantly.

Her smile faded.

Slowly… she nodded.

And then she began to cry.

My eyes widened again.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered between shaky breaths. “We were both drunk and—”

Her voice started breaking apart.

“I didn’t mean to— I swear I didn’t mean for it to happen—”

Her breathing suddenly became uneven.

Short.

She looked like she was having a panic attack

My chest tightened immediately.

“Hey, hey,” I said quickly, grabbing her shoulders gently.

“No you did nothing wrong.”

She shook her head violently.

“I should have stopped you— I should have—”

“You did nothing wrong,” I repeated firmly.

“I should have had more control.”

Her breathing was getting worse now, little gasps leaving her lips as tears kept falling down her cheeks.

I cursed under my breath.

Bree had always had a weak heart.

Everyone knew that.

It was one of the major reasons why everyone was always doting on her.

Even Anika used to be protective over her little sister once upon a time, until she let jealousy get the better of her.

“Relax,” I said quickly, brushing her hair away from her face.

“Take a breath Bree, you’re going to make yourself sick.”

She tried to steady herself but her chest was still rising and falling too fast.

“Breathe slowly,” I told her.

“Like this.”

I took a deep breath and exaggerated the motion so she could copy it.

It took a moment but eventually her breathing slowed down.

Her fingers were still clutching the sheets tightly though.

And while she calmed down, my own mind started filling with pieces of last night.

Broken flashes.

The taste of alcohol.

The sound of music in the living room.

Laughter.

A bottle of Hennessy sitting on the table.

Then another one.

Then another.

Bree sitting next to me.

Too close.

Her cheeks flushed.

Her voice softer than usual.

“You’re not happy,” she had said.

I remembered that part clearly.

I had laughed it off.

But the alcohol had already made my thoughts loose.

“Anika is just being ridiculous,” I had muttered.

“She’s talking a whole lot of nonsense, asking for a divorce.”

Bree’s eyes had widened.

“No way,” she whispered.

“She wouldn’t do that.”

I remembered pouring another drink.

“She’s just being dramatic,” I said. “She’ll get over it.”

Bree had stayed quiet for a long moment after that.

Then she said something else.

Something I didn’t quite remember.

But I remembered how close she had been sitting.

Her leaning into me, so close that I could literally taste her breath.

My hand on her waist.

The taste of alcohol on her lips.

My eyes widened as the realization finally settled in.

“Fuck!”

The word burst out of my mouth before I could stop it.

I ran a hand through my hair, the headache in my skull suddenly getting worse.

“Simon?” Bree asked softly.

I looked down at her.

Her eyes were still red from crying.

“Do you hate me?” she asked.

I shook my head “No Bree, none of this is your fault”

“Anika will hate me,” she wailed.

Her voice cracked again and she buried her face in her hands.

I sighed and pulled her into my arms.

“Relax,” I said.

My thoughts drifted back to Anika.

I want a divorce.

The words echoed in my head again. It was less of what she said and more of how she said it that bothered me, the conviction in her eyes like she actually meant it.

Then she had slapped me.

She was just acting all jealous and childish, probably wanting my attention.

I did nothing wrong, besides she was the one that told me to go back to Bree… we could have been together in bed by now but she made her choice.

She was childish and irrational, and now here we were.

I looked down at Bree again.

She was trembling slightly against me.

I tightened my arms around Bree reassuringly.

“You don’t need to cry,” I said calmly.

“But Anika—” Bree whispered.

“Anika will never leave me,” I said firmly “she’ll be mad for some time but I’ll get her a gift and all will be well again”.

Bree looked up at me uncertainly, biting her lip.

“You really think so?”

“I know so.”

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   EPILOGUE

FIVE YEARS LATER…ANIKA'S POV“Give it back!”“No!”“Ruby!”“Zayden!”I closed my eyes and pinched the bridge of my nose. There was screaming, and the noisy sound of little running feet. Not to talk of something that sounded suspiciously like glass marbles rolling across my living room floor. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, my Zayden and Ruby still had enough energy left in them to still argue over some toy.“That’s my dinosaur!”“Well I touched it first so it’s mine!”I groaned.Today was supposed to be a calm and beautiful day.Keyword being supposed, because clearly it was anything but.Today was also Zayden's fifth birthday.Which meant our house had been transformed into complete and utter chaos, because for some reason, I had made it a must to celebrate all of his birthdays.Call it a response to my own trauma or whatever, but birthdays were to be taken seriously in this house.Colorful balloons floated across the ceiling.Birthday decorations covered every available su

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   THE END

ANIKA’S POVI could already hear the music playing.Somehow, it did absolutely nothing to soothe my rapidly beating heart."Deep breaths, pretty Anika," Ruby whispered beside me, squeezing my hand gently."I am trying."I really was, even though I felt like I was seconds away from passing out. This was really happening.Again.But still…The first time Liam and I got married, I remembered being so happy. I remembered thinking that nothing could possibly ruin that moment. And then Bree appeared with a gun and turned what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life into a nightmare.A day that was supposed to represent love became one filled with fear, blood, and heartbreak. But now...The universe was giving me a second chance. After everything that had happened, after all the crying, the pain, the questioning, and the moments where I wondered if happiness was something I would ever truly have again...Yet somehow...Here we were.Things were finally looking up for us.A mon

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   FINALLY STARTING AFRESH

ANIKA’S POV“Christ's sake.”I was ignoring the phone again. At this point, it had become a routine. The prison would call, I would stare at the screen for a while like it was out to get me, and then I would decline it.I knew who was making that call, and to be frank, I was not interested in speaking to her. Heck, I wanted to forget about her existence. It was even a miracle that she was able to survive that gunshot, and yes, she was my sister, and I was happy that nothing serious happened to her in the long run, but I really did not want anything to do with her anymore.Bree had done so many horrible things to me in my lifetime. But stabbing me that day… that took the crown for sure.Unfortunately, Liam had noticed.Of course he had.The man noticed everything.I was curled up on the couch with my feet resting on his lap while he absentmindedly rubbed my feet."That's the third call this week," Liam said softly.I sighed. "Don't I know it.""You should answer it."I looked up immed

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   MARRY ME AGAIN ANIKA

ANIKA’S POV“Liam?”My eyebrows furrowed in confusion when I entered our room and I did not see Liam, but instead, all I saw was a box in the middle of the bed and a small note that said, ‘Wear this, Princess.’What was this man up to this time?I walked toward the bed and carefully lifted the lid of the box, my breath catching almost immediately. The dress was absolutely stunning.A baby blue sequin dress that stopped mid-thigh, framing my body in the most delicate way possible with just enough cleavage to tease but not exposing. And it was also so soft.A smile slowly spread across my face."Liam..." I whispered to myself.I took a bath before getting ready. I tied my hair in a half-up bun before applying a little bit of makeup. Nothing too much. Just enough to highlight my features. When I finally slipped into the dress, it fit perfectly, almost like it had been made specifically for me.I gasped when I looked at myself in the mirror after putting on the dress.I looked so beautifu

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   WHERE I BELONGED

ANIKA’S POVI was nervous, and not the good kind of nervous. And what made this feel so much worse was the fact that I had never had to feel this kind of nervousness around Liam before, even when we were not together yet, and the fact that this much of a strain in our relationship was caused because of my actions, it was a hard pill to swallow. He nodded once “yeah, we can talk”I kept on picking at my nails, over and over again, until Liam grabbed my hands and caressed it so tenderly.“Stop doing that Princess, you are going to hurt yourself” he said it so softly. My mouth opened and no words came out of my mouth. He called me Princess again. Was it weird how much that I missed hearing that?I nibbled on my lips and he put his thumb in my mind, stopping my movements “don’t do that either” he said, his gaze totally focused on me.I cleared my throat “w-where should we go talk?” I asked.“Should we go home Princess?” he asked.I nodded “yeah, home is good” I said immediately. He smiled

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   CAN WE TALK?

LIAM’S POV“Get up!”Sure enough I had been awake for over the past hour just staring at the celling and replaying yesterday’s events over and over again like some kind of horror movie that just would not leave my brain, but that did not mean that I was in the mood for this shit. Not this early in the morning, and definitely not when I was in the kind of headspace that I was in at the moment. All I wanted was to just be left alone.I looked up with an annoyed look on my face only to see Jonathan staring down at me with the exact same facial expression as me.“What do you want?” I drawled my voice sounding incredibly salty.“How long are you going to keep this up for Liam?” he asked.I scoffed “what, you can’t wait to kick me out?”He rolled his eyes at me “yesterday you were all in your feels Liam, and I get it, trust me I do. But hiding out of here forever is going to do nothing except make you a coward.”I sat upright “so, what do you expect me to do now?” I asked. He folded his arm

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   DOES YOUR OFFER STILL STAND?

ANIKA’S POVThe doorbell rang.It was that kind of continuous ringing that always got on my nerves and made me wonder if the person on the other side had no manners.“Who is it” I said walking to the door but the ringing just continued.I pulled the door open and my eyes widened when I saw my paren

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   YOU SAID IT YOURSELF

ANIKA’S POV“What!”He said like he could not believe what I was saying, which to his credit was totally understandable, he must have never thought that in his wildest dreams would I even insist on a divorce.Unfortunately for him, I was no longer the person that I was before…now, I could care less

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   YOU HAVE CHANGED

ANIKA’S POVCan I not get a moment of peace?I mean seriously, that was not too much to ask for. Because tell me why at 10pm, just when I was finally falling asleep, my door banged open. My body jolted upright thinking it was some kind of actual burglar, but I only relaxed when I saw that it was ju

  • DEAR EX HUSBAND, YOU LOVED ME TOO LATE   WHAT IS THIS?

ANIKA’S POVI hid the divorce papers in the middle of a thick stack of other documents. My fingers trembled slightly as I aligned the edges, making sure the pages looked perfectly normal. Contracts. Approval forms. Internal reports. The usual boring paperwork that Simon signed every single day with
