The Bennets

Mrs. Bennett finally gathered enough courage to step closer, though she kept her gaze fixed anywhere but at the body.

“Ryan,” she said softly, urging him. “Do it. This is our only chance to finish this. We have to be quick before anyone notices us here. Now!”

Ryan swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing as though the act itself hurt. He bent, grabbed the shovel with trembling hands, and forced himself upright. The first thrust into the ground sounded impossibly loud, the metal cutting into the soil, shovelful by shovelful, until sweat began to roll down Ryan’s temples. Each motion felt like a punishment, like burying more than just the girl. It felt like burying what was left of himself.

Behind him, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett worked together in grim silence. They lifted the girl carefully, placing her onto the tarp. Mrs. Bennett’s face turned pale as she tried to keep her eyes away from the smashed ruin of her head.

“Don’t look at her,” Mr. Bennett said gruffly. “Just move.”

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   A Statement

MONIQUE Detective Mark finally stopped the recording.“Thank you, Ms Moffat,” he said sincerely. “Your statement is detailed. This will move the case forward... I will also contact Detective Hernandez to get a picture of the case.”Patrick nodded, rising beside me, and shook hands with the detective. Then, he placed a reassuring hand on my back as we left the room.Aunt Jane stood the moment she saw us walking out. Patrick gave her a calm nod.“Your turn, ma’am. I’ll be right beside you.”Àunt jane nodded as she clutched her handbag tighter but followed him inside.Detective Mark walked me back toward the front of the station, and the moment Marcus saw me, he quickly stood up and walked toward me, relief washing over his face.He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me into a warm, protective embrace. A soft kiss on my temple.“I’m so proud of you,” he whispered.“It was just a statement,” I muttered, embarrassed by how shaky my body still was.“I know. But I know how hard this was fo

MONIQUEPatrick rose from his seat, smoothing a hand over his tie, the decision already made.“Alright,” he said calmly, “I’ve already contacted the lead officer. They’re expecting us at the station.”I blinked. “Us?”“Yes.” His tone firmed. “I will accompany you. Both of you.” His gaze moved to Aunt Jane. “Mrs Aster, you are now officially under my protection as a secondary client.”Aunt Jane nodded, visibly relieved.“And Marcus?” I asked quietly.Patrick turned to him. His tone softened with respect, but with boundaries.“Marcus, you’re not part of the legal case, so you don’t need to give a statement today. However,” he offered a polite nod, “you are welcome to accompany them for moral support. But once we reach the station, the legal process will involve only Monique and her aunt.”Marcus accepted that with a quiet nod, as if he had already been expecting that. Patrick continued, voice steady and author

MONIQUEI step out of the car too and walk around to Marcus’s side. He gives me a small smile as he closes the door behind me, but my mind is spinning.I don’t know how to put it into words. I don’t know why it feels like this. But Aunt Jane keeps asking me if I’m sure… keeps repeating it… keeps planting this seed like she wants me to doubt him, like she’s trying to pull me away from trusting Marcus. And the thing is....I already trust him. I trust his judgment. I trust his intentions. I trust him more than I have trusted anyone in a long time.I’m already in this. I’m already doing this. And now she’s messing with my head, right when I need clarity the most.I don’t need her doing that right now. Not now, not today, not when everything is about to change. We walked inside the building and towards the elevators. The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, releasing a breeze of overly conditioned air and the faint scent of polished wood. I stepped out first, my pulse echoing faintl

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Hope You're Right

MONIQUEWhen we get back inside, I quickly get changed, and I hurry downstairs to Marcus’s office to see if he’s phoned his friend, if they talked, and to see what’s going on.I knock, and when his voice calls me in, I push the door open. He’s still on the phone. He raises a hand, telling me two minutes, so I sit down and wait.“Okay, we are on our way,” he says before hanging up.Then he turns toward me.“So… what did he say?” I ask immediately.“Okay,” he begins, leaning back slightly. “He’s agreed to take you as a client. Even though he has a huge case going on right now, I called in a favour. He’s personally going to take care of your case. And since this is going to turn out to be a public case, it’s going to be the state against Ryan, so he’ll mostly be assisting the public prosecutor who ends up handling it. But...” He points a finger lightly for emphasis. “He told me he’s going to be with you every step of the way. He’ll guide you, advise you, everything you'll need. He’s got

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Yes

MONIQUEI didn't even have to think about it,“Yes. Yes. And yes again. How many times do I have to tell you for you to understand?”“Well, it just surprises me that you didn’t talk to me about any of this. When I met you this morning, you told me you were just going in search of Marcus so you could know where to start. Suddenly, I see your father’s lawyer coming to the house, and then I hear that you’re getting a divorce. What is this really about? What is going on? I’m only trying to save you. I don’t want you to run into the arms of another Ryan. I want you to take your time. It doesn’t matter if you don’t divorce him today and you divorce him tomorrow, but I want you to do it with a clear head....not to go from one relationship to another.”It’s my turn to take a deep breath.“I know what you’re saying, Auntie. I’m listening. I hear you, and I’m doing exactly what you’re saying, I will take my time with everything... Except when it comes to the divorce. I can do all of that when I

  • DIVORCED MORNING AND REMARRIED TO HIS BROTHER BY NIGHT   Aren't You

MONIQUEI quickly walk back toward Marcus.“No, no, no, no, no, no. What are you saying? I want the divorce. I do NOT want to be married to Ryan. Please don’t think I’m doing this because it was your idea. I do not want to be married to that horrible disgusting man. Who would want to be married to him? Of course, I want to get divorced.”“Are you sure?” he asks softly. “Because your aunt kind of used some crazy big words.”“I guess she’s scared. And she cares about me.” I tell him the truth.“Okay,” he says finally. Although he doesn't look convinced.“I’m going to go upstairs and talk to her while you talk to your lawyer friend,” I say, hoping to ease his doubts.“Okay,” he murmurs, leaning forward to kiss me, soft, reassuring, grounding. A kiss I didn’t realise I needed.I walk out of Marcus’s office with a bright smile on my face, but the moment I start climbing the stairs to find my aunt, the smile fades, and the anger starts rising inside me.Because what the hell was Aunt Jane t
