Mag-log in“You bitch!” Carter roared as he strode closer, his eyes dark with rage. Hailey’s breath caught at the sight of the brown envelope clenched in his hands.
She had hidden it so carefully. She never imagined he’d look for it, let alone find it. “You told me you never received your pay for last month… So what's in this envelope then?” His voice rumbled low, almost animalistic. “I… I can explain,” Hailey murmured, her voice was weak. The last time he had been this angry, his hand had nearly struck her. The memory sent shivers down her spine. “Okay,” he pressed, taking another step forward. “Go on.” “I kept it for my treatment,” she answered flatly, forcing the words out of her mouth. Carter scoffed, moving so close she could feel his hot breath fanning her face. Hailey squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the inevitable outburst. But instead of pain, she felt a warm hand on her head. Her eyes snapped open in both disbelief and surprise. Carter was smiling, smiling and patting her gently. “You could have just told me you needed money for your treatment,” he said softly, almost kindly. “Don’t ever hide money from me again, okay?” Hailey nodded quickly, expecting him to hand the envelope back to her. But instead, he slipped it into his jacket and brushed past her, leaving her rooted to the spot in shock. She stood there in the middle of the living room, numb. The payment for her treatment was almost due. If she couldn’t pay on time, everything might come to a halt. Trying to steady herself, she looked around at the mess and forced her trembling hands to start cleaning. An hour later, the living room was in order. In the bedroom, still scattered, she began arranging things. While folding one of Carter’s favorite jackets, something slipped out to the floor. Hailey bent down and picked it up, a white slip of paper. Her heart sank when she read it. A check-in receipt for a hotel. For a long moment, she just stood there, frozen. She had suspected it before, but this was different. This was proof or close to it. Her hands trembled as she reached for her phone, tempted to call Iris. But then she pulled back. No. She couldn’t drag her friend into this. This was her own fight. After a few minutes of agonizing over whether to confront him, she decided against it. Without solid evidence, he would just deny it all, maybe even turn it back on her. By the time the house was fully arranged, Hailey felt drained. Too tired to cook so she ordered dinner instead. The table had been set for an hour, but Carter still hadn’t returned. She called him over and over again, but every time it went straight to voicemail. It wasn’t unusual for him to vanish without telling her, but tonight, it pressed heavier on her chest. Hailey knew one thing for certain, he wouldn’t come home until the money was gone. That was exactly why she had hidden it in the first place. When the clock landed at eleven, she gave up waiting. Quietly, she ate a little dinner and went to bed ~~~ Hailey woke up earlier than she had been doing for the past couple of days, skipping work for days without even asking for permission was already a crime, and going late when she decided to resume was even worse. She noticed Carter beside her on the bed still fast asleep, she wondered when he got in and how fast asleep she was that she didn't even hear him come in. After a couple of minutes, she was already done preparing for work, but Carter was still on the bed. Hailey hesitated at the doorway of the room, not sure if she should wake him up. As she walked out of the room, she noticed a black jacket Carter had worn yesterday tossed carelessly across the armrest of the couch. She frowned slightly, she had gone through a lot of stress to make sure the house was neat. Her fingers lingered on the fabric before she picked it up. Maybe the envelope was still inside. Even though she knew it wasn’t, a small flicker of hope urged her to check. She slipped her hand into the pocket, her heart hammering, but instead of paper, a faint scent clung to her fingers. Her breath hitched. It wasn’t Carter’s cologne. It was floral, sweet, and oddly familiar. Hailey froze, her mind racing. Then recognition struck her immediately. It was Iris’s perfume! She had noticed it once when Iris had leaned over her at the hospital, the scent was warm and comforting. Now, the very same smell lingered on Carter’s jacket. Her grip on the jacket tightened. The thought lodged itself in her mind like a thorn. ‘Why would my husband smell like my best friend’s perfume?’ She dropped the jacket like it burned her skin, her chest heaving with sudden unease. A hundred explanations ran through her head, but none of them made sense, none of them except the one she didn’t want to believe. Hailey quickly stepped back, her knees wobbling. She wanted to scream, to wake Carter up and demand for an answer but she held back. This wasn't evidence enough, anyone could wear the particular perfume.“Is it true that you had a clash with Mr. Hart?” Iris asked; she was surprised when she heard the news flying the moment she and Carter came back from lunch. Hailey simply nodded with a hum.Right now, Iris had left her own desk and was now sitting casually at Hailey’s. This had been the kind of relationship they had, and since Hailey had apologized earlier, everything had gone back to how it used to be.“He was a complete nutcase,” Hailey scoffed, and Iris let out an amused chuckle. As far as she had known Hailey, standing up against someone had never happened. Hailey was the type that would rather stay on her own and swallow up whatever rubbish she was given.“I don't have the strength to fight back,” she had told Iris during college days. But now, sitting before Iris was a completely different person.“What did you do to my friend?” Iris gasped as she placed her hands on her chest, a dramatic way of expressing herself.Hailey laughed.Just then Carter walked up to them; as usual,
The next morning came by faster than Hailey could have imagined; she worked and barely slept. Each time she does, she sees herself going back to the time she was murdered. When she eventually woke up, she was drenched in sweat and was breathing heavily.Reluctantly, she dragged herself out of bed, got ready for work, and tried her best to shake everything off. ~~~~By midday, the chatter from the office was starting to die down as everyone was preparing to go out for lunch. Iris had been giving Hailey some weird looks all morning but had never gone to approach her, not even when the situation pushed her to. Carter walked past Iris’s desk; they both exchanged subtle greetings before he finally stopped at Hailey's desk.“Hey babe,” Carter greeted as he leaned down and placed a kiss on her forehead. Hailey only responded with a smile as she turned to face him properly.Iris's head snapped up a little; her eyes were fixed on her system, but her ears were listening closely to what Cart
Mira extends her hand for a handshake, much to Hailey’s surprise, Hailey takes her stretched hands. Mira’s hands felt a little bit cold against Hailey's palm, this startled Hailey for a brief moment as she looked up at Mira with a confused expression.“That’s how my temperature usually is,” Mira quickly chipped in with a small smile. Upon seeing the confusion on her face, Hailey gave Mira a simple nod, still wondering why she felt so cold.Upon seeing how lost Hailey looked, she decided to break the awkward silence that was threatening to creep in. “Are you here all by yourself?” she asked, now taking back her hands.“Or are you here for a date?” Mira asked with a smirk.Hailey had to bite the inside of her cheek to stop herself from laughing, she let out a smile—a genuine one instead .“I won’t call it a date though.” Hailey responded.“I’m sorry for taking so much of your time already,” Mira apologized with a pout, placing her hands dramatically on her chest.Hailey shook her head
Hailey sank into the passenger seat, shutting the door a little too firmly. The sound echoed through the quiet car before Dan started the engine. For a few seconds, she said nothing, her eyes were fixed on the glass reflection of the building outside. Dan glanced sideways. “Are you okay?” he asked. She forced a small smile while tugging at her seatbelt. “Yeah. I'm just a little bit drained.” He gave a slow nod. “Lovers’ quarrel?” Dan asked with a slightly teasing tone. Her head snapped toward him. “That’s not…” She stopped herself mid-sentence, taking a slow breath. “nothing of that sort.” Dan smirked faintly, an amusing smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “If you say so,” he shrugged casually. Hailey looked away, jaw tightening. She wasn’t upset about Carter seeing her with Dan, not really, but then she needed Carter if anything. Dan noticed the shift in her silence and chuckled quietly. “You always get that face when you’re thinking too hard.” “I’m not think
As soon as Trevor left the room, the atmosphere shifted, like everyone could finally breathe again. Hailey was packing up her notepad when Iris’s soft laugh reached her ears. “Well,” Iris said with a honeyed tone, “looks like someone’s about to have a very busy few weeks.” Hailey looked up slowly, meeting her gaze. Iris’s smile was bright and polished, but it wasn't hard to notice the edge to it. “Guess Mr. Trevor must have really been impressed by you,” Iris added, resting her chin lightly on her palm. “Or maybe he’s just punishing you for nearly taking out one of his employees.” A few nearby colleagues chuckled under their breath. Hailey’s jaw tightened, but she forced a small, calm smile. “Or maybe,” she said softly, “he just thinks I can handle what others can’t.” That shut a few of them up. Iris blinked, she clearly wasn't expecting that. Before she could reply, another voice cut through the air. “Let’s not flatter ourselves, Miss Wyn” Mr. Hart. How could she ha
Iris blinked as she watched her leave, her smile faltering once again. There was something in Hailey’s eyes, a quiet awareness that made her chest tighten with unease. Hailey leaned against the wall just outside the conference room, her arms folded loosely as she watched people walk in one by one. Mrs. Rose gave her a small nod with a smile before stepping in as well. The lady was too quiet; if anything, it was almost like she wasn't there. The air hummed with quiet conversation and the faint rustle of papers. Just then, Iris approached with a clipboard in her hand and that ever-pleasant smile on her face; Hailey straightened. “Hey,” Iris said softly, “aren’t you coming in?” she asked. Hailey’s lips curved into a faint smile that didn’t quite touch her eyes. “In a bit. I just… have some trash to take out.” Iris blinked hard as she paused mid-step. “Trash?” she repeated, tilting her head in confusion. “What are you talking about?” Hailey turned fully toward her now, that
