I followed him out, and the men stationed along the hallway straightened when they saw James and then, a beat later, registered me trailing behind him. I nodded at the one nearest the stairwell, and he nodded back without asking where I was going.

James took the turn at the end of the hall, pushed through the side door that led onto a little concrete landing and by the time I stepped out after him he was already in the corner with a cigar between his fingers.

It hit wrong the second it reached my lungs and I coughed out, turning my face just enough that I did not blow the smoke straight back at him, my grip on his fingers tightening through it. He went quiet for a beat, then let out a low chuckle, disbelieving more than amused.“Christ,” he let out, still holding the cigar between us because I had not released his hand. “You don’t even smoke.”I coughed again, eyes watering but I forced the words out anyway. “You can’t take it back so I’m staying.”He chuckled and his free hand came up to rub over my hair, a rough, absent pass that messed it up. It surprised me enough that my grip on his other hand loosened. He used that. Slipped free, brought the cigar back to his own mouth, and took another drag, smoke slipping past his lips while he looked at me over it.“Stubborn,” he said, then reached up with his free hand and wiped the light tears the cough had left at the corners of my eyes, thumb brushing once under each of them. James took the turn at the end of the hall, pushed through the side door that led onto a little concrete landing and by the time I stepped out after him he was already in the corner with a cigar between his fingers.“You’re not fine, are you.”It came out less like a question. He let out a breath of smoke and exhaustion, then turned his head just enough to look at me.“You followed me here.”“Yeah.”He took another drag, eyes sliding off me and out over the people below. “I’m fine.”Yup, I’d be fucking blind if I were to believe that. It was clear as day, yet he still won't budge. So I reached out, the back of my fingers brushing his forehead and then his temple, and the heat there made my stomach drop.He went still unde

"Fine," he muttered under his breath, dragging a hand down his face. "You win.""Really?""Don't sound so shocked, it's insulting." He pushed himself up from the chair, a wince tightening the corner of his mouth as the movement pulled at the bandage beneath his shirt while he lowered himself onto the edge of the bed. Then he exhaled, leaning back against the pillows with obvious relief now that he wasn't fighting gravity anymore. "Are we good now?""Not even a little." I sat on the edge of the bed next to him."What else do you want me to do." He reached over, tugging lightly at my wrist until I shifted closer, letting my head rest against his shoulder even though I kept half an eye on the bandage. "Because I want you to stop worrying so damn much. You're gonna give yourself premature wrinkles."I rolled my eyes. His hand found my hand, lacing our fingers together loosely and we stayed like that for a while until I broke the silence."I spoke to them yesterday.”He didn't need to ask

SARAPHINA °❀⋆.ೃ࿔*:・I was given a room in one of the smaller houses that night, someone's idea of hospitality that felt more like a formality than anything warm, but I was too drained to care about the particulars. I barely remembered falling asleep. I just remembered waking up the next morning to unfamiliar sheets and sunlight slanting through a window that didn't belong to me, and for a second I forgot where I even was. Then it all came rushing back. Nobody had to tell me outright what this place actually was. I'd put enough pieces together on my own, the armed men stationed like furniture, the way everyone deferred to James without question. I didn't need a formal explanation to understand I'd stumbled into something far bigger than a recovering situationship and a private hospital room.I got dressed in yesterday's clothes, since nobody had thought to bring me anything else, and made my way back toward the main house, retracing the path from the night before as best I could rem

I pressed my forehead against his chest."I'm worried," I mumbled into his shirt, and it came out muffled by the wool of his coat, which still smelled like cold air and the inside of his car. "I know she sounded fine, I know she said all the right things, but she's just twenty and she's sitting across from the last damn person on this planet who should be anywhere near her.""I know," he said, and his hand moved slowly up and down my back. "I'm worried too, Love, I promise you I am. I'm sorry that I didn't show it on the phone, but I think if I had, she would have heard it and hung up, and then we wouldn't have had even that much." He let out a breath that shook a little on the way out. "And I'm sorry about something else, because I know how this is going to sound, but I'm relieved. Knowing Noah is okay is the first thing in days that's let me breathe all the way down."I pulled back far enough to look at him. There was something in his face, something like uilt, the look of a man ap

Gage made it in twenty-six minutes. I know because I watched the clock on the stove the entire time. He came through the door still in his coat with his keys in his fist and his face gray, and he went right past me and straight up the stairs, and I heard him in her room, heard the wardrobe, the drawers, the window. When he came back down he stood at the bottom step with one hand on the post and looked at me, and I could see him deciding something."I'm calling Riley," he said."Okay.""Right now.""Okay, yes, do it."He had the phone out and his thumb was actually on the screen. And that's when mine buzzed on the counter between us, and we both looked at it at the same time.It was an Unknown number. I almost didn't answer. I think a part of me knew that if I answered it would be either the best thing that ever happened to me or the worst, and there's no middle with a call like that. But somehow, I managed to pick it up and put it on speaker."Hello?""Mom."My knees almost gave
