Jamal's POV

The gunshot ripped through the stairwell like a thunderclap that was deafening and final and time stood still for a heartbeat and the smoke was thick in the air, curling around the metal rails, my ears rang with the echo but my focus stayed fixed on Melissa as she was halfway up the stairs, frozen in a wide-eyed stare and clutching the railing like the world was tilting underneath her feet as Arden stumbled backward against the wall, his face indecipherable through the haze of a seconds that passed when i didn't even know who had pulled the trigger and my finger was still on the gun, shaking.

Then i saw the blood.

It wasn’t his.

“Melissa!” I yelled, racing up the stairs.

She swayed on the step, the red bloom spreading across the shoulder of her gown, the same shoulder that had already been torn open and for a moment, her eyes rolled back in her head, trying to speak the words dying on her lips then i caught her just before she fell, her weight hitting my chest hard enough

Jamal’s POVI did not breathe. If I did, I was afraid the sound would break whatever fragile balance still existed in that chamber. The footsteps stopped a few paces away from us. Slow. Confident. Like the owner of them knew nothing here could touch him unless he allowed it.Melissa’s fingers tightened around mine. “Jamal,” she whispered. “Who is that.”I swallowed. “Someone who should not be standing.”The figure stepped fully into the light.Every memory I had slammed into me at once. Blood on stone. A body that went still in my arms. A scream that had torn my throat raw because it had been too late.“You,” I said hoarsely. He smiled. The same smile I remembered. Calm. Familiar. Wrong. “That is not the greeting I expected.”“You are dead,” I said.“So many people have told me that,” he replied lightly. “It gets boring after a while.”The creature behind us shifted, uneasy now. Its claws scraped stone, but it did not advance. It did not attack. It waited. That scared me more than any

Jamal’s POVDead men do not clap. That was the first thought that cut through my mind as the shadow stepped fully into the light. The second was worse. He looks exactly the same. Not scarred. Not broken the way a man should look after dying the way he did. His suit was pristine. His smile easy. Familiar in the most poisonous way possible.Alive.My hands started shaking before I could stop them.Melissa felt it instantly. Her grip tightened around my arm, grounding me even as my chest hollowed out.“No,” I said hoarsely. “That’s not possible.”He chuckled, slow and indulgent, like I was a child refusing medicine. “You always did struggle with reality when it inconvenienced you.”The creature behind us growled, uneasy now, its massive form shrinking back into the pit as if it knew its place. That terrified me more than anything else.“You died,” I said. “I watched you...”“Yes,” he interrupted smoothly. “You watched what I allowed you to see.”Melissa’s breath hitched beside me. I felt

Melissa’s POVThe moment the light swallowed me, I knew I had stepped too far.Not because of fear.Because the voice changed. The Jamal in front of me was too still. Too quiet. His eyes did not move the way Jamal’s always did when he was worried or angry or trying to hide pain. This one stood perfectly calm, his expression almost peaceful. And Jamal had never looked peaceful in danger.I stopped walking.“You are not him,” I said. The figure tilted its head. “Why would you say that.”“Because Jamal would never call me forward like this,” I replied. “He would tell me to run.”The thing smiled with his face. “People change when they are afraid.”Behind me, the darkness shook. I heard Jamal’s real voice echo from far away, strained and desperate.“Melissa. Do not move.”I turned slightly, trying to find him. “Jamal. I hear you.”The creature stepped closer. “You hear him because I allow it.”“No,” I said. “I hear him because he is real.”Its smile widened. “And what am I.”“A lie,” I sa

Jamal’s POVThe world shook again. The heat from the pit rolled over me until sweat dripped down my neck. I tried to stand but the ground kept trembling under my feet. The mimic stared at the rising creature, then turned sharply toward me.“You feel that, do you not,” she whispered.I ignored her. “Melissa. Stay out. Please stay out.”The pit roared again. A sound like fire snapping against stone. The mimic smiled. “She is stepping in.”I froze. “No. She would not.”“Oh she would,” the mimic said. “She chose you. She will always walk toward danger if you stand inside it.”“Melissa,” I shouted. “Do not enter. Stay where you are.”A sharp crack ripped across the chamber ceiling.A voice drifted through it.“Jamal…”My heart stopped.I turned toward the gate above. A thin flash of white cut across the darkness like lightning. Her voice again. Closer this time.“Jamal… I am here.”The mimic let out a slow delighted breath. “She follows the thread. How lovely.”“Do not touch her,” I warned

Melissa’s POVThe moment the gate began to glow again, every Elder froze. The stones under my feet vibrated and the air pulsed with a deep pressure that pushed against my chest. I stepped back but the energy followed me as if it knew my name.Zara grabbed my arm. “Melissa, stop. Do not go near it.”“I hear him,” I whispered. Her eyes widened. “Who.”“Jamal.”The words trembled out of me before I could think. It was not his voice in the air. It was not his breath at my ear. It was something else. Something like a thin thread pulling at the center of my chest.I pressed a hand there. “He is calling me. I know he is.”Kael stepped between me and the stone circle. “You cannot enter the gate. This is not a rescue. You will walk into something you do not understand.”“I do not need to understand anything,” I said. “I need to reach him.”Zara shook her head quickly. “Melissa, listen to me. Whatever happened when the light took both of you, it tore the ground open below. No one knows where he

Jamal’s POV**Voices surrounded me the moment I hit the lower ground. I tried to rise but the stone beneath me shook like something enormous was dragging its weight across it.A soft voice called my name.“Jamal.”I pushed myself up on my elbows. “Show yourself. Now.”She stepped into the dim red glow. Her movements were slow, almost gentle, but nothing about her felt natural. Her smile was familiar, but her eyes were empty.“You still stare at me the same way,” she said. “As if you never buried me.”My jaw tightened. “You are not her. I know exactly what you are.”She tilted her head. “Do you. Then why are you trembling.”“I am not trembling,” I said. She laughed softly. “You lie even to yourself.”I stood slowly. “Keep your distance.”“I thought you would be happy to see me,” she whispered.“No. I am not,” I replied. “You are a trick. Tell me why you are wearing her face.”She stepped closer. “Because you remember me. Strong memories build strong forms. And you remember every detail
