Melissa

I didn't sleep last night.

Every time i attempted to close my eyes, i heard Eleanor's voice in the blackness, smooth, even, oozing with the kind of power that had no need to shout "What are you willing to give up to keep each other safe?" he asked

I was stretched out on silk sheets, looking up at the penthouse ceiling, the city lights shimmering dimly beyond the floor-to-ceiling windows and his arm was across my waist, his breathing steady but even in sleep he was tense, his brows lowered like fighting interior demons.

I envied him his capacity to sink into sleep, even if shadowed.

Me? I was awake as a pin, my chest tight and my mind whirling.

With my father, my war had been longstanding with the Whitmoore name and with the expectations i was born into. Now though, i was starting to realize something terrifying that Eleanor Kingsley wasn't here to fill the space of my father's grip. She wasn't trying to entwine and was trying to free.

And maybe, i was already falling apart.

MelissaThe phone vibrated in my hand like a beast and the name on the screen throbbed in the blackness, slicing through me.Eleanor.It shouldn't have been hard as the natural thing was to have it ring, have it die and toss the phone right into the Hudson but logic has nothing to do with Eleanor Kingsley. She had the ability to reach inside me, twist things until what felt wrong in some way began to feel inevitable.Jamal stood behind me, tight with rage. His hand remained poised like he wanted to grab the phone from me, crush it in his hand. His tone was deep and commanding "Don't answer it."But my fingers rebelled against me. They trembled on top of the screen, torn between obligation and desire. My heart pounded so hard i could barely hear myself breathe back "What if i need to?"Jamal reached out with his hand but i shied away, holding the phone against my chest like something secret. I couldn't explain why not to him, not even to myself but something inside me needed to hear he

Jamal's POV Eleanor Kingsley. The mere mention of the name sent a shiver through me but to see her in the flesh, alive, polished and unperturbed in the midst of chaos was another thing altogether and Melissa's fingernails dug into my bicep like claws, her soft-spoken words still echoing within me "She's here"I turned about staring at the broken chamber but Eleanor was nowhere to be found, vanished into darkness. There was only the lingering scent of her perfume a strong, muggy combination of jasmine and smoke."She wants us to know she's watching us" I snarled holding Melissa tighter "It wasn't an accident"Melissa's eyes were wide and pale with a twist of fear and disbelief "I thought she was dead and gone. After everything""She doesn't die that easily" I cut in, my voice low. It wasn't reassuring but it was reality. We walked carefully through the remains of the estate, each sound of our footsteps a weight i did not believe. Michael Whitmoore had vanished into darkness like a man

  • Daddy's Little Secret    Chapter Thirty Six

Jamal POVThe planet wanted to swallow us whole. It snarled beneath my feet trembling like some beast roused from centuries of sleep. Dazzling dust, spitting flames and air torn asunder by the sound of marble snapping along its center. I clutched Melissa tight and her small hands burrowing into my shirt like she might find purchase there. Her hold had never been so intense, furious, frantic and still, she was slipping."Don't let go!" she panted, voice a rasp of terror. My chest constricted "I won't. I swear it to you...i won't."But once more, the floor gave way under us, concrete tearing like rotten bread as we were standing on borrowed land and it was eating away bit by bit. I could feel the finish pressing down on us, seconds from now.I hugged her to me tighter, spinning my body around to shield her from a second waterfall of debris but a roof-sized piece of it fell an inch from my back and my bones resonated with shock. My teeth were chattering and my arms were shaking but i did

MelissaFalling is a lot like drowning. The world doesn't rush past you—it closes in around you. Air is ripped from your lungs, pressure crushes the ribs from your chest, and your head reaches out for something solid, something that will never come. That's what it felt like when the ground vanished beneath us, the manor collapsing into a sinkhole of flames and smoke. One minute I was clinging to Jamal, my cheek pressed against the heat of his chest, the next I was airborne, the earth gone, plummeting into a black abyss with only terror keeping me whole."Don't let go!" I screamed, my voice raspy, my throat burning. His arms wrapped around me at once. I felt the tension in his muscles, the strain of his breathing, the way he pressed me to him as if he'd be destroyed before he'd release me."I've got you!" he shouted back, his voice a lifeline in the chaos. But no matter how tight his hold, reality teased me—he couldn't stop the fall.Shards of debris rained down, metal and stone crashi

  • Daddy's Little Secret    Chapter Thirty Four

JamalTime didn’t stop.It stretched and it clawed at me twisting seconds into endless jagged shards of eternity and the smoke thickened, guns barked and men shouted but all i could see burned into my vision like fire was the barrel of her father’s gun pointed at Melissa not at Rashid and not at the men circling us at her.For the briefest heartbeat, i thought I’d lost my mind and that the chaos had twisted my perception but no, the intent in his eyes was clear, cold and merciless then something inside me snapped.I lunged, twisting my body until i covered her completely. My chest pressed to hers and her fingers clutching the fabric of my shirt like she could hold me in place and could tether me from being ripped away.If he pulled that trigger, the bullet would go through me first.“Over my dead body” I growled voice rough and primal.Melissa’s breath hitched beneath me with hot tears sliding against my throat as she whispered my name like a prayer and a curse all at once.I didn’t l
