Raven ran out of the office building, not stopping until she was blocks away. She finally slowed down, gasping for air, and leaned against a lamp post. Tears streamed down her face as she tried to process what had just happened.

Why did her father have to be so cruel? Why did he have to treat her like she was nothing?

As she stood there, trying to catch her breath, her mind began to wander back to her childhood. She remembered the happy times, the times when her mother was still alive.

Her mother had been a kind and gentle soul, with a heart full of love. She had always been there for Raven, supporting her and encouraging her to pursue her dreams.

But after her mother's death, everything had changed. Her father had become colder, more distant. He had married Victoria, a woman who was more interested in his money than in being a good stepmother.

Raven's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her phone buzzing in her pocket. She pulled it out and saw a text from her best friend, Emily.

"Hey, girl, what's up?" Emily asked.

Raven sighed and typed out a response. "Just had a run-in with my dad. I'll tell you all about it later."

Emily responded with a sympathetic emoji and made a promise to call later.

Raven smiled, feeling a small sense of comfort. At least she had Emily to talk to.

As the darkness began to fall, Raven realized she needed to get home. She took a deep breath and started walking, her feet carrying her toward her small apartment on the outskirts of town.

The city lights blurred together as she walked, her mind still reeling from the events of the day. She felt lost and alone, unsure of what the future held.

Raven's apartment building loomed ahead, a nondescript structure that seemed to blend into the surrounding landscape. She trudged up the stairs, her legs heavy with exhaustion.

As she reached her apartment door, Raven fumbled for her keys, her hands shaking slightly. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, closing it behind her with a soft click.

The silence of her apartment enveloped her, a welcome respite from the chaos of the day. Raven took a deep breath, feeling the tension in her body begin to ease.

She walked over to the window and stared out at the city below. The lights twinkled like stars, a reminder that there was still beauty in the world.

Raven's gaze drifted downward, her eyes focusing on the dark alley below. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she wondered what the night held.

The city was always alive at night, the streets pulsing with energy. But Raven didn't feel like being out in it tonight. She felt like curling up in a ball and hiding from the world.

As she stood there, lost in thought, Raven's phone buzzed again. She pulled it out and saw a text from Emily.

"Hey, I'm calling you now," Emily said.

Raven smiled and answered the phone. "Hey, girl," she said, trying to sound cheerful.

"Hey, what's going on?" Emily asked, her voice concerned.

Raven took a deep breath and launched into the story of her day, telling Emily all about her father's demands and her feelings of frustration and despair.

As she talked, Raven felt a weight lifting off her shoulders. It was good to have someone to talk to, someone who understood her.

When Raven finally hung up the phone, she felt exhausted but also a little more at peace. She knew that she still had a long way to go, but with Emily's support, she felt like she could face whatever challenges came her way.

Raven walked over to her couch and collapsed onto it, feeling the soft cushions envelop her. She closed her eyes, letting out a deep sigh.

As she drifted off to sleep, Raven felt a sense of uncertainty about the future. But she also felt a sense of determination. She was going to take control of her life, no matter what it took.

The darkness closed in around her, a soothing balm for her frazzled nerves. Raven let herself sink into it, feeling her worries slowly fade away.

But even as she slept, Raven's mind was still racing. She was thinking about her father, about his demands and his expectations. She was thinking about her dreams, about the life she wanted to lead.

And she was thinking about the stranger, the man who had watched her run out of the office building. Who was he, and what did he want?

Raven's eyes flickered open, her heart racing with a sudden sense of unease. She lay there for a moment, listening to the silence.

And then she sat up, her eyes scanning the darkness. She felt like she was being watched like there was someone in the room with her.

"I understand you're looking to make a deal."Kendrick nodded, his eyes narrowing. "I am. I want to expand my business, and I need your help to do it."Damon leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers together. • Damon's Descent    Chapter 1: Bound by Duty

Raven Kendrick's heels clicked against the polished marble floor as she walked through the sound echoed off the walls, a steady beat that matched the rhythm of her racing heart. She hated coming to her father's office and the feeling of being trapped in this sterile, soulless environment. As she turned a corner, Raven caught sight of the reception desk, where her father's assistant, Mrs. Jenkins, sat typing away on her computer. Mrs. Jenkins looked up and smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Good morning, Raven," she said, her voice warm and friendly. Raven forced a smile onto her face, feeling like she was putting on a mask. "Good morning, Mrs. Jenkins," she replied, trying to sound cheerful. But as she walked past the reception desk and into the inner offices, Raven's smile faltered. She hated this place, hated the feeling of being under her father's thumb. She felt like a pawn in his game, a game she didn't even understand. Raven's father, Mr. Kendrick, was a powerful
