Chapter 1

“We have to go now, Katherine.” A deep male voice called out after putting the last truck in the van and strolled over to the young lady in blue dress who stared at the mansion which had been sealed off.

Her eyelashes fluttered, her eyes were wet and blurry with tears, and her soft brown hair was blown backwards by the light breeze that brush past her face, the scorching sun hit her skin, but that wasn’t what bothered her.

She had just lost everything, her parents, her home and most of the memories she grew up with as a child, it was the worst sorrow anyone can face.

Tears rolled down her cheek hitting the blue summer flowery dress she was wearing, her lower lips trembled, for the past three days she had been crying and tears didn’t seize from falling from her eyes.

“Katherine, you will be alright with us.” The man said again as he stood next to her and placed his hand on her shoulder to comfort her.

Yet with his words she knew she wasn’t going to be, who was going to be alright losing her parents? They had died in a car accident and right after their death she discovered that their company had ran bankrupt and the house foreclosure.

“We should go now, there is nothing here anymore.” He told her and she turned her pale blue eyes to look at him, he was right, her parents where no longer here, and this building no longer belongs to her, there was nothing here to hold unto anymore.

She nodded and he led her to the car, opening the passenger side of the car, she got in and he got into the driver’s side and drove off.

All through the drive, Katherine stared out of the window, her heart was heavy, it wasn’t easy to lose a parent and to move to an unfamiliar place, but she was without choice, she had no money, she had nothing, but her father’s friend, Jonas.

He was in his early forties and was married, they had two children, people she has never met before, she only knew him since he worked with her father, but she hasn’t met his family yet.

“Katherine, don’t you worry, we will take good care of you.” Jonas told her when he glanced at her seeing she was just staring out of the window in a daze.

Katherine glanced at him, she tried to force a smile, but couldn’t, her heart was aching, all that was in there was sadness.

“You can rest now, as I will wake you when we get there.” He informed her and she turned her eyes away from him again and stared out of the window, sleep was far from her eyes, she couldn’t sleep, whenever she tried, she saw her dead parents.

They pulled over after a four hours drive in the parking lot of a two story apartment and Jonas turned to Katherine who didn’t have a blink of sleep.

“We are here.” He told her and she glanced at the building and took of her seatbelt, she turned to see him with a huge smile on his face.

“This will be your new home, Katherine, you can be comfortable here.” He said while pushing the car door open and stepping out.

Katherine drew a sharp breath and stepped out of the car, she glanced up at the building, it was nothing like the exterior decoration of her family house, her family were wealthy, very wealthy and she had lived her life in that mansion all her life, it felt so odd being here, but she knew she had no choice.

“I will go call them out to help you with the luggage.” He told her, pulling one out of the truck and sending it inside the apartment.

Katherine walked towards the back of the truck and pulled out one heavy luggage, she knew she shouldn’t have taken much, but her outfits were one thing she loves, they were expensive and the last fortune of her parents which she posses.

“Honey!” Jonas called out as he got into the living room and Rita who was in the kitchen preparing dinner stepped out.

“You are back?” She glanced down at the luggage that he rolled alongside him, then her eyes darted over his shoulder to the door, but seeing no one, she raised her brows.

Sensing the curiosity in her eyes, he replied her unspoken question. “She is outside getting more luggages.” He told her and glanced upstairs. “Where are the kids, they need to assist her.” He said.

Rita scoffed. “She knew she was coming to live off someone yet she brought lots of luggage along with her, where would she fit them all in?” She crossed her arms with a frown on her face.

Jonas turned to his wife and drew a sharp breath. “Honey, we already talked about this, we shouldn’t be harsh on her, she had just---“

“Yes, she lost a parent, so what?” Rita ran her tongue, her words shocking Jonas. “She is an adult now and can deal with her emotions, so stop using that as an excuse!” She didn’t mind being loud.

“You should stop this now.” He didn’t want to talk about it so he called out. “Children, come down now, Katherine is here!” He called out.

“They are both studying, she can bring in her luggage on her own---“

“Just be nice to her, can you?” He said in a loud angry voice this time, hating the fact that his wife was acting like a kid who doesn’t understand the situation.

Rita ran her hand through her hair and drew a sharp breath. “Well, I can only pretend to accept the fact that she would be living here because of you, but don’t force me to love her, cause I won’t.” She said and left for the kitchen.

“Dad…” Jonas turned when he heard the footstep coming down the stairs. “Where is she?”

“She is outside, go help her with the other luggage, I would send this up.” He said and headed upstairs.

Katherine pulled out the second luggage from the truck and turned to take out the last one, but as she held the luggage hand, another hand that was about to get the truck was placed on hers and she raised her eyes only to meet the eyes of the young man standing next to her with a goofy smile on his lips and her lips parted.
