"Sama Arthur," the voice cuts through churning dust, a ghost of sound in the wake of the storm. "I know you're here. Show yourself."

A woman emerged from the fog of the battlefield's edge, boots crunching on the parched, shattered earth. Sama Arthur strode purposefully, her jacket streaked with the ochre dust, a deep contrast to the somber backdrop behind her. Ozone and metal hung heavy in the air, the residual imprint of a battle well fought and won, or maybe merely concluded.

"Dean Wason," she replied, her own voice a low even growl. "You don't belong here. This is over."

"Over?" Dean Wason snorted, edging closer. His usually calm face contorted into a raw desperation Sama Arthur hadn't seen in years. "It's never over until I see the child."

"The child is safe," Sama Arthur answered, her hand moving toward the hilt of a hidden knife. "That is all you must know."

"No, that is not all I must know," he snapped, his voice growing stronger. "I need to know they're with me. I need to know

"He's still there," Timothy whispered, as though he were talking about a ghost. "I've never seen him like this."Dean Wason had not moved. He was standing at the lip of the chasm, looking out at the vacant sky where he had last glimpsed the form of Leiran. A breeze ruffled his hair and the loose threads of his clothing, but Dean Wason didn't appear to notice.Paul Wason approached him slowly, one hand on the shoulder of his brother. "Dean. We have to go. It's not safe here."Dean Wason finally stirred, looking slowly at his brother. His eyes, which had always been so keen and calculating, were dull now, with a deep sadness in them. "I saw her, Paul. I saw her. Not the prophecy, not the weapon. Just a child.""We all witnessed it, Dean," Alex Henry answered quietly. "It was. a humbling experience.""No," Dean Wason said, his voice a shattered, low rasp. "You don't understand. I dream of her. I've been dreaming about her for months, before all this. I hear her voice. I hear her laughter

"He's getting further behind, Sama," Crayons Arthur's voice was a rasping warning, whipped on the gusts of wind that danced around them on the rising rock surface. Down below, the chasm opened wider, devouring Dean Wason's retreating forms.Sama Arthur did not respond immediately. Her eyes stayed with Dean Wason, a tiny, desperate form vanishing into the dust. The child, Leiran, in her arms emitted a gentle, golden radiance, a warmth on the cold wind."He's not quitting," Dickson growled, his eyes scanning the rim of the chasm below. "He'll come up with another route.""He always does," Theo acknowledged, his own face furrowed with concern. "His obstinacy is the stuff of legend."Sama Arthur finally spoke, her voice a gentle whisper. "He's broken, not dangerous. Not now. Not like this.""Broken men are the most dangerous, Sama," Crayons Arthur said, putting his hand on the hilt of his sword. "They have nothing left to lose.""He has everything to lose," Sama Arthur said, her grip on t

"It's the message, Sama Arthur," Theo said, his face furrowed as he showed it to her in a wrinkled scroll. The company had found a temporary refuge in the ruins of an ancient watchtower, distant from the inferno of the forest. The air was crisp, the scent of damp stone and moss a welcome relief. Leiran, two weeks old, rested contentedly in a makeshift cradle, his golden aura a welcome, reassuring shadow."But the words… they're incredible," Sama Arthur breathed, her gaze sweeping over the cryptic script and wildly scribbled notes. "Dean Wason… escaped? From the Silent Citadel? It's impossible. The wards there are impenetrable. They were written by the first Architects themselves to hold the most deadly of our kind.""Possible, but true," Dickson confirmed, his voice a low, gravelly growl. He leaned on the broken window of the watchtower, looking out across the horizon. "My observers are hearing echoes, whispers in the outer villages. They say a temporal disruption passed through the C

"Leiran is the name," Sama Arthur answered, her voice a gentle certainty that cut through the subdued mumblings of the fatigued group. She looked down at the child, who now slept peacefully, his little body emitting a soft, golden radiance that pulsed gently, almost like a heartbeat. The light was not a fierce, blinding surge, but a steady, profound warmth that held the very essence of creation and destruction."Leiran," Dean Wason repeated, his gaze on the glowing child. "It's… a powerful name." He knelt beside Sama Arthur, his own fatigue evident in the slump of his shoulders, but his eyes burned with a harsh, unbreakable protectiveness."It was my mother's name," Sama Arthur replied, her hand tracing the line of the child's face. "The name of a woman who was a guardian of balance, who understood that life and death were opposite sides of the same coin. She believed that to protect one, you had to embrace the other." Her tone, though soft, was weighted with an agonized history and a

"It… it's quiet," Gloria panted, her voice rough and her eyes stretched in disbelief. Outside the cave mouth, the cacophony of screams and the screeching noise of the solidified Architect realization had ceased abruptly. There was only quietude, punctuated by the crackling of the flames in the trees in the distance.Dickson, still holding up his greatsword in defense, dared to look beyond the cave's shimmering ward. He eased his blade, his mouth agape. "They're. just standing there. The Alphas. Stunned."In the cave, a profound silence had fallen, a significant departure from the terror and chaos that had recently claimed the territory. Sama Arthur, with the new baby in her arms, felt the strange surge of energy fade, replaced by an enormous stillness emanating from the baby. The baby, having screamed, now lay motionless, his tiny chest rising and falling in deep, silent sleep."What did you do, little one?" Dean Wason asked softly, his hand on Sama Arthur's shoulder. He gazed up at t
