If it's with you, then I want to do it

“Don’t you think this will look too loud on me?” Mae asked as she laughed with another lady that was also standing in front of a mirror and holding a dress up against her body.

They were window shopping.

“Mae, you know that you can pull off anything. This question you just asked is pointless to be honest”.

Mae fake gasped and hit the the lady lightly on her shoulder.

“Did you just compliment me?”

The lady rolled her eyes.

“Stop that zina”, Mae said and laughed.

“I wonder how it is being best friends with you, really”. Zina said while Mae chuckled.

“I’m going to miss you when you go away for real”.

Zina suddenly became quiet, she knew her best friend could not afford to move out of this town now on her own, her safe place was here but lately it’s been compromised by a man she knew her best friend disliked.

Zina placed her hand on Mae and drew her in for a hug.

“One day I’ll be able to come get you out of this town, I promise”.

“This town is not a bad place you know?” Mae said and laughed.

“Not when mr dickhead won’t leave you alone, I know you dislike him”.

“He is married with a son Zina, what is wrong with men?”

“A million dollar question I’m not sure anyone will be able to answer”, zina replied and broke the hug.

“Take that dress, I’m paying”. Zina said while she grabbed hers too and dragged Mae before she could protest.

“I hope you won’t forget me”, Mae said suddenly.

“Shut up, this is the twenty first century and we have what they call mobile phones and FaceTime, Skype, i*******m, Twitter, F******k and so many other social networks that we can use to always keep in touch. Don’t make me smack your head”.

Mae smiled and stood by while zina paid for their purchases and then they left the store.

“What are you doing after this?” Mae asked.

“Going back to join my mom in packing up”.

“Ohhh”, Mae muttered.

She could have offered to join her best friend but the family of her best friend disliked her, for reasons she could not understand. She could swear that part of the reason they’re moving away with Zina is her, but her best friend had swore that it’s only because her father got a new job that pays better and he wanted her to take some post graduate classes over there so she could get better job opportunities.

With that, in about a week her best friend and probably only friend in the town will move thousands of miles across the continent to the European continent, to England.

“Stop what you are doing”, Zina muttered as they got into the cab she had hailed.

“Stop what?”

“You are overthinking again, stop it”.

“I am not”, she protested and Zina rolled her eyes at her.

“Okay and the sky is purple”.

“You never can tell, maybe we grew up with lies that this is actually blue?” Mae said as she looked out the car window.

The sky was turning grey, looks like it’s about to rain.

“We have to hurry home”.

The first stop is Mae’s house, but when the cab driver stopped in front of her house she felt her stomach dipped in despair.

A familiar black jeep was parked in front of her house and she knew who was that all well.

“I’ll come with you”, zina said and held her hand.

“No no, you don’t have to. Your mom is waiting for you”.

“I told you I was going to help her not that she is waiting for me, now get down let’s go in”. Zina said and paid the cab driver.

Mae opened the door and stepped out with zina following behind her.

“How long is this going to last?” Mae asked her friend and sighed.

“I don’t know, but don’t just give in. You don’t want to end up like your mother do you?” Zina asked.

Mae’s mother had been a victim of a married lying man too, after she had taken in with Mae the man had absconded, leaving just her mother to fend for herself and her.

“Do you?” Zina asked again while holding Mae’s chin, forcing her eyes to look at her.

Mae shook her head slowly.

“Good, now no matter what I want you to remain strong and don’t fall into his traps, men like that just uses girls. You know he’s the son of a mafia boss right? I don’t want you caught up in that lifestyle Mae”.

“I definitely will have nothing to do with him”.

“Very good, one day you’ll be able to leave this town, very soon”, Zina said and hugged her friend.

That was two years ago, Mae smiled into the space in front of her and then brought out her phone, it’s been a long while since she spoke with her best friend, she had missed several calls from her but had been so busy trying to figure out what to do with her pregnancy and with Aaron and then Alexander that she keeps forgetting to call back, she FaceTimed her best friend.

“Well, hello stranger”, Zina said immediately she picked the call with a smile.

“Hey Z, what’s up?”

Her friend rolled her eyes and then turned the camera around for Mae to see her scattered office table.

“Work, I feel like my boss hates me. He keeps pushing the silliest jobs for me to do, it’s almost closing time but I’m not sure I’ll get this done before then and he said to..” Zina stopped and cleared her throat.

“Finish this up before you leave the office today”, she mimicked in a deep voice that Mae guessed to be her boss’s voice.

She giggled, “if he sounds anything like that I’m sure he must be fine as hell”.

Zina sighed, “he is really fine. I think I might be bisexual or pansexual because I am attracted to him”.

Mae choked on air and laughed, “what?!” She spluttered out.

Zina shrugged, “yes, I know he makes my life hell but I find myself being stupidly attracted to him”.

Mae laughed.

After about a year of leaving her, Zina had finally opened up to Mae that she had been in love with her for a while, her parents had found out that she was into girls and that was why they disliked her. Because they thought she was the one that was corrupting Zina.

Mae had been shocked but she played it off cool, Zina had understood that her best friend only liked her as a best friend and had moved on and dated another girl, then another girl and then another girl.

So it was kind of surprising to hear that she was attracted to her boss.

“Maybe he likes you too and that is why he is acting out like a stupid teenage boy and stressing you out”.

“Oh God I wish that was it”, Zina sighed.

Mae laughed, “want to do something equally crazy and teenage-y like egging his house?” Mae asked teasingly and Zina lowered her voice.

“If it’s with you, then I want to do it”, she replied and waggled her brows.

Mae flipped her friend off, “stop flirting with me”.

“Mmhmm, now tell me what’s going on with you, how is your hotshot Aaron and that annoying jerk Alexander. I still can’t believe it’s been two years and he is still on your neck”, zina said and pushed up her glasses.

“I know right?” Mae muttered.

“I hate him”, zina said distractedly.

Mae nodded, she wanted to tell her best friend about her condition now and everything that has been happening especially last night’s own.

Zina looked at her iPad and saw that her best friend looked distracted.

“What’s in your mind?”

“I’m pregnant”, Mae blurted out.

Zina’s eyebrows shot up and she picked up her phone from where she had placed it.

“Tell me you’re kidding please?”

“I wish I was”.

“Alexander?”

“He doesn’t know yet, I am not showing yet”.

“For how long?”

“About six weeks”.

“Oh my goodness”.

“We’re running away”.

“Oh my God!” Zina exclaimed.

“Alex will find you, remember the last time and the last guy?”

“We’ll be fine”.

“And you’re sure because?”

Mae took a deep breath in, “I have to catch you up on a lot of things”.
