Chapter 4: Fresh Start

As soon as Chelsea and Reese stepped off the plane, the intense heat of Columbia greeted them like a warm, smothering blanket. It was stifling yet oddly rejuvenating, as though the sweltering air carried with it the promise of a new beginning—a fresh start. Chelsea shielded her eyes against the bright sun, taking in her surroundings, while Reese appeared perfectly composed, her sunglasses shielding her from the glare as they made their way toward a waiting vehicle.

The journey from the airport was swift, the city zipping past in a blur of bright colors, bustling streets, and vibrant energy. Columbia was unlike New York, brimming with a unique charm that felt chaotic and alive all at once. Soon, their vehicle pulled up to a towering gate that opened slowly, revealing a sprawling mansion on the other side.

“Is this your residence?” Chelsea asked, her jaw nearly dropping.

Reese turned to her, a wide grin spreading across her face. “Yep. Welcome to my little slice of heaven,” she said with a wink. “Okay, maybe not so little.”

The mansion was breathtaking, a sprawling estate nestled amid lush gardens and framed by tall, swaying palm trees. The pristine white exterior gleamed in the sunlight, its massive windows and balconies offering panoramic views of the city below. It was the kind of home Chelsea had only ever seen in magazines or on television.

“Do you actually live here?” Chelsea asked again, still trying to process the grandeur before her.

“Of course,” Reese replied with a playful nudge. “Don’t forget, I’m a chef. A pretty great one, at that. I have high-profile clients who pay me handsomely.”

Chelsea shook her head in disbelief. “You never mentioned living somewhere like this.”

Reese shrugged, her grin widening. “Didn’t want to overwhelm you. But now that you’re here, consider this place your home for as long as you need.”

Home. The word felt foreign yet comforting to Chelsea. Maybe, just maybe, she could truly start over, just as Reese had suggested. Perhaps this place had the power to heal what was broken inside her.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur of unpacking and settling in. Chelsea explored the mansion’s spacious rooms, each one more luxurious than the last. She marveled at the details—the marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and tastefully curated decor. For the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to dream of a fresh start.

Her reverie was interrupted when Reese’s phone buzzed. Reese glanced at the screen and let out a groan.

“What’s wrong?” Chelsea asked, sitting on the edge of the plush bed Reese had assigned her.

“It’s work,” Reese said with a mix of annoyance and resignation. “I have to go to a meeting later today. I was hoping we could just relax and enjoy the day.”

“Can’t you reschedule?” Chelsea asked with a frown. “We just got here.”

“I wish I could,” Reese sighed, running a hand through her hair. “But it’s important. I’m meeting with a big client. Come with me—it won’t take long, and we can unwind afterward.”

Chelsea hesitated. The idea of attending a business meeting didn’t appeal to her, but she didn’t want to be left alone in an unfamiliar city either. Reluctantly, she nodded. “Alright, I’ll come with you.”

“Great!” Reese said, clapping her hands together. “You’ll see—it’ll be over before you know it.”

Later that afternoon, the two arrived at the meeting venue, the opulent Hotel de Luxe. As their car pulled up to the entrance, Chelsea’s breath caught in her throat. The hotel was even more extravagant than Reese’s mansion. Its gleaming facade was adorned with towering marble columns, cascading fountains, and grand arches that made it look more like a palace than a hotel.

Inside, the lobby was just as awe-inspiring. A massive chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a golden glow over the polished marble floors. Elegant guests milled about, their laughter and conversations mingling with the soft hum of classical music. Chelsea tugged at her casual outfit, feeling distinctly out of place, while Reese strode confidently ahead.

“Alright, I need to use the restroom quickly,” Reese said, turning to Chelsea. “Wait here and don’t wander off.”

Chelsea smirked. “I’m not a child, Reese.”

Reese chuckled. “Sure, sure. I’ll be back in a minute.”

As Reese disappeared down a hallway, Chelsea began to feel a bit awkward. She stood in place for a moment, unsure of what to do with herself. The luxurious surroundings were mesmerizing, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she didn’t belong.

Her gaze landed on a narrow corridor branching off from the main lobby. Curious, she decided to explore, hoping to pass the time.

The further she walked, the quieter it became. The lively sounds of the lobby faded, replaced by an almost eerie stillness. This part of the hotel felt colder, more secluded. Taking a turn, Chelsea found herself in a room that seemed entirely different from the rest of the hotel. Plush velvet chairs lined the walls, and the soft, dim lighting created an intimate ambiance.

She was admiring the decor when a deep voice broke the silence.

“Excuse me, miss,” the voice said, startling her. She whirled around, her heart leaping into her throat.

A man stood a few feet away, tall and broad-shouldered, dressed impeccably in a black suit. His presence filled the room, and his intense gaze sent a shiver down her spine. His chiseled jaw, perfectly styled dark hair, and piercing steel-gray eyes made him look like he had stepped straight out of a movie.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, his tone firm but not unkind.

“I—I’m sorry,” Chelsea stammered, taking a step back. “I didn’t know this area was off-limits. I was just waiting for my friend.”

His sharp gaze didn’t waver. “This section is for VIPs only,” he said, raising an eyebrow.

“I’m sorry,” she repeated, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. “I didn’t know.”

He studied her for a moment, his expression softening slightly. “It’s alright,” he said after a pause. “Just be more careful about where you wander.”

Chelsea nodded quickly, eager to escape the awkward encounter. But as she turned to leave, something made her hesitate. Maybe it was the way his gaze lingered on her, or the strange tension in the air. She glanced back at him, her curiosity piqued.

“Do you work here?” she asked, surprised by her own boldness.

A faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. “Something like that.”

Before she could ask anything else, Reese appeared suddenly, her eyes wide with alarm as she spotted Chelsea.

“There you are!” Reese exclaimed, grabbing Chelsea’s arm. “I’m so sorry, sir. She wandered in here by mistake. We’ll leave right away.”

The man nodded, his gaze still fixed on Chelsea as Reese led her back toward the main corridor.

Once they were far enough away, Reese let out a sigh of relief. “What were you thinking?” she asked, half-laughing, half-scolding. “That area is for VIPs only!”

“I didn’t know!” Chelsea protested, still flustered. “And who was that guy? He seemed... important.”

Reese shook her head. “I have no idea, but you’re lucky he wasn’t angry. Let’s stick to the public areas from now on, okay?”

Chelsea nodded, but her mind was still racing. There was something about that man she couldn’t quite put into words.

As they left the hotel, Chelsea found herself thinking about him far more than she wanted to admit.

You deserve it.”Chelsea smiled faintly. “You make it sound like I’m not used to shopping.”He chuckled. “Well, after tomorrow’s dinner, you might need a few new dresses. My stepmother doesn’t miss a single detail.”She rolled her eyes, teasing. “Oh, so you’re saying I should impress her?”“I’m saying,” he said with a grin, “I don’t want her thinking I’m dating someone who doesn’t know fashion.”Chelsea laughed softly, shaking her head as they entered a designer store. She walked between racks of glittering gowns and silk dresses, her fingers brushing over the fabrics. Liam trailed behin

Of all people. Dating Liam?”Adams threw his jacket onto the couch and let out a bitter laugh. “You think I don’t see what she’s doing, Mother? It’s obvious. She’s trying to make me jealous.” He poured himself a drink, downing it in one gulp before continuing. “She probably wants me to regret ever leaving her. But I don’t. Not one bit.”Marina raised a brow, clearly unconvinced. “Oh, don’t fool yourself, Adams. You sounded more shaken than you’d like to admit when you saw her walk in today.” She walked toward the mirror, adjusting her earrings with

Your grandfather’s death shifted a lot of influence toward him. We need to be cautious.”Adams nodded stiffly, adjusting his tie. “I know, Mother. But let’s not forget — I’ve been in this office far longer than he has. The board trusts me.”Marina gave him a long, thoughtful glance. “Trust is fickle, my dear. Especially when money and legacy are involved.”When they arrived at the boardroom, the directors were already seated. There was a low buzz of conversation until the chairman cleared his throa
