Wren Calder has spent fourteen years being told her wolf is dying. She has learned to live with the limp, the cane, and the pity in every pair of eyes that follows her through Ashfall territory. What she has never learned to live with is being wrong about herself. On the night she is supposed to meet her fated mate, the new Alpha rejects her in front of the entire pack. Broken, he calls her. Not worth the risk. He has no idea what he just threw away. Wren’s wolf did not die when she was eight years old. It sealed itself to survive an attack that was never random, and it has been waiting fourteen years to wake up. When it finally does, the Alpha who discarded her will find out exactly what rank looks like when it is not given, but claimed.

Chapter 1

POV: Wren

“I, Kade Ashfall, reject Wren Calder as my mate.”

The words hit before he’d even finished saying them. Not the sound. The weight. Like something reaching into my chest and closing a fist around whatever had been living there since I was eight years old, hoping.

I didn’t fall. I’d promised myself that much the night before, alone in front of the mirror I hated, practicing standing still.

Three hundred wolves stood around the bonfire circle, and every single one of them had gone quiet enough to hear my cane shift against the stone when I planted it harder to keep my knees from doing what they wanted to do.

Kade didn’t look away from me while he said it. I gave him that much credit, even as I hated him for it.

“The bond is severed,” the Elder intoned, and somewhere behind me I heard Bree Sinclair make a small, satisfied sound she didn’t bother to hide.

I looked at Kade instead of her. His jaw was tight, his eyes not cold exactly, just closed off, the way a door looks right before someone locks it. He’d smelled me an hour ago across that circle and known, the way every wolf in Ashfall knew when their mate stood in front of them for the first time. I’d watched it hit him. Watched his whole body go still with it.

And then I’d watched the council lean in and whisper, and watched that stillness turn into something else.

“Congratulations, Alpha,” Marisol said, stepping up beside her son, and there was nothing warm in the word.

I made myself turn around. That was the part I’d rehearsed hardest, not the standing still, the turning around, walking back through a crowd of my own pack with my chin level and my cane finding the ground exactly where it needed to, no stumble, no hitch, nothing for anyone to whisper about on top of everything else they already had.

Somebody’s mother pulled her pup back out of my path like I was contagious—an old habit by now. I didn’t even flinch.

Tobias found me before I made it past the second ring of fire pits. He didn’t say anything, just fell into step beside me, close enough that his shoulder was almost against mine, which was the only kind of comfort he knew how to offer and also, tonight, exactly the right one.

“Don’t,” I said, before he could.

“Wasn’t going to.”

“You were going to say something about his father.”

“I was going to say his father would’ve backed him for the same reason, and it still would’ve been a coward’s move.” Tobias kept his voice low enough that it didn’t carry. “That’s different from feeling sorry for you.”

“Good. Because I don’t need it.”

He didn’t argue that, which was its own kind of mercy.

We were almost clear of the ceremony grounds, almost at the tree line where the firelight gave out and the dark actually felt like something I could disappear into, when it happened.

A flicker. Under my skin, low in my chest, exactly where his rejection had landed a few minutes earlier.

I stopped walking.

“Wren?”

I didn’t answer Tobias. I was too busy holding still, the way you hold still when you think you’ve imagined a sound in an empty house and you’re waiting to find out if it happens again.

It happened again. Not pain. Not the ordinary ache that lived in my leg on cold nights. Something else entirely, something with a pulse of its own, low and slow and unmistakably alive, in a place where I had been told, for fourteen years, by every doctor in this pack, that nothing alive remained.

My wolf was supposed to be dead. Or dying. Or whatever polite word Dr. Halloway used when she didn’t want to say the true one to my face.

It was not supposed to move.

“Wren, you’re white as a sheet.” Tobias’s hand closed around my elbow, steadying, and I let him, because my legs had picked tonight of all nights to remind me they weren’t entirely to be trusted. “Do you need to sit down?”

I looked back over my shoulder, past him, back toward the fire and the circle and the pack already turning away from me to celebrate an engagement I hadn’t been told about yet. I found Kade’s eyes already on me from across all that distance and all those people.

He couldn’t have felt it. Whatever this was, it was mine, sealed somewhere he had no claim to anymore.

But he was staring at me as something had just changed, and I had absolutely no idea what expression I was wearing that would make him look at me like that.

“I’m fine,” I told Tobias, and started walking again before either of us could ask any more questions I didn’t have answers to.

Behind me, the fire kept burning, and something inside me, for the first time in fourteen years, burned right back.
