Chapter 2

Author: Tiny Nina
The moment Leo walked in, he took up all of Mom and Dad's attention.

Mom hurried over with a bowl of soup. When she brushed past me, she shot me a sharp, warning look; she was warning me not to make a scene in front of Leo.

The hardened expression on Dad's face was replaced by a smile the moment he saw Leo. He scooped Leo into his arms. "I haven't seen you all morning, son. I missed you so much!"

I stood frozen in place, watching the happy family of three. It felt as though an invisible hand had seized my heart and squeezed it mercilessly, leaving me in so much pain that I could barely breathe.

Even though I had worked a summer job away from home for two months and made a special trip back just for the special occasion, all Dad could think about was Leo, whom he got to see every single day.

On a day that was supposed to be a joyous occasion for family reunions, I came to the sharp realization once again that I had lost my home long ago.

I turned my head away, grabbed my bag, and headed straight for the door, desperate to escape this suffocating place. With a sharp crash, a plate was accidentally knocked to the floor by my movement, shattering into pieces.

Mom's and Dad's smiles instantly froze. I had barely taken a step when Dad yanked me back. I stumbled and fell onto the broken pieces, shards of ceramic plunging deep into my palm.

Dad looked down at me with utter disgust. "Daphne, after everything I've done to raise you, you have the nerve to smash plates and give me an attitude? Looks like all those years of education were a complete waste on you!"

He shoved his finger in my face, spewing spit as he chewed me out.

I parted my lips to explain, but Mom's hand crackled across my cheek. "It's supposed to be a festive holiday, yet you just had to upset your father, you ingrate! Plus, you refused to marry the man we picked for you. Will you only be happy if you drive your father and me to our graves?"

Tears streamed down my face as I shook my head repeatedly.

For years, I had held out hope, countless times, that Mom and Dad might love me.

I had given up the bedroom I'd lived in for eight years so Leo could have it, sleeping on the balcony that was freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer for a decade, foolishly believing that my sacrifice would make them care about me.

Unfortunately, everyone in the family just took it for granted.

Later, when a fire accidentally broke out in the house, Mom and Dad carried Leo out and left me completely behind, as if I didn't even exist. I almost died when I was 17.

Now that I had managed to survive, they wanted me to sacrifice the rest of my life for Leo's future.

But I was also their child. Sadly, no one gave a damn how I felt; they treated me as though I were invisible.

I curled up on the floor in despair, sobbing until my whole body ached from the inside out. By the time my tears ran dry, Mom and Dad had tied my hands behind my back and locked me out on the balcony.

Countless nights in the past, I had lain on the little bed on the balcony, listening as Mom used her gentlest voice to tell stories, lulling Leo to sleep. I, on the other hand, could only keep my tears at bay as the cold draft blew in through the window.

This time, I refused to let Mom and Dad control my fate, though. I fumbled beneath my pillow and found the box of matches I had hidden there.

I was about to set the bedding on fire and force Mom and Dad to let me out when I heard a click, and the balcony door was pushed open by Leo.

"Mom and Dad are asleep, Daphne. I'm going to untie you and let you go."

My movements stilled, looking into Leo's sincere eyes in disbelief.

"Daphne, you've already given me one of your kidneys. I can't be selfish and ask you to sacrifice the rest of your life, too, just so your wedding gift can buy me a house."

Leo's words brought a trace of warmth back to my heart, which had gone cold. Before I left, I hugged him with gratitude.

The second my fingertips touched the doorknob and I was about to escape, I froze dead in my tracks.

Three days later, the court convened. Kieran was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while Mom and Dad were each sentenced to three years. I sat in the gallery, watching Mom's and Dad's faces turn pale the moment they heard the verdict. Both of them turned to look at me, their eyes filled with despair. Mom's voice was choked with emotion. "I know I was wrong, Daphne. Please talk to the judge. I don't want to go to prison!"Dad rasped, "I'm sorry for what I did to you, Daphne… However, you can't just ruin your mom and me. Besides, if we're both behind bars, what's going to happen to your little brother?"I forced a self-deprecating smile. Leo again. It was always about Leo.My relatives, who had come to watch the trial, began piping up. "Daphne, you can't be an ungrateful wretch and send your own parents to prison! Don't you have a conscience?""Daphne, you wouldn't even exist without them! Did you learn nothing from all those years in school?""I can't believe you'd take your own

In an instant, all eyes were on me. I pointed at Kieran and forced out, "H-He's not my husband. I'm only 18, and he raped me!"I rolled up my sleeves, pant legs, and shirt, exposing the countless injuries littering my body."Dad gave me all these injuries. He set me up to be raped; he's an accomplice! Even if the surveillance footage is gone, the injuries on my body are evidence. There's still evidence left inside my body from Kieran, too. I'm willing to undergo a forensic examination right this instant!"The moment those words left my mouth, the smiles froze on Mom and Dad's faces, rendering them speechless. Before long, I was escorted to undergo a forensic medical examination. The wounds on my skin matched the marks left by Dad's belt. The most compelling evidence was the physical evidence Kieran had left behind inside me. Even the doctor who examined me couldn't help but frown in sympathy. "What kind of monster would do this to such a young lady…"I pressed my dry, parched li

Dad blanched, and he staggered backward in fright. Kieran hurriedly released his grip on my hair. I practically scrambled on all fours, throwing myself at the cruiser. "Help—"Before I could finish, Mom clamped her hand over my mouth. She plastered a smile on her face and hurriedly explained to the officer, "Please don't get the wrong idea. My daughter's been mentally unstable since she was little; she always thinks people are out to hurt her. We were just about to take her to see a doctor when she suddenly bolted out."Kieran hastily chimed in, putting on the appearance of an honest, harmless man. "That's right. I'm her husband. We were just about to take her to the hospital. I'm so sorry you had to see this."Both of them painted me as a lunatic. Realizing that the officer was about to leave, I shook my head frantically and pointed at the shattered surveillance camera on the ground. "They're lying! That camera captured all the evidence of them hurting me!" I rasped out.I rol

Mom and Dad completely lost it. Both of them charged at me and tried to stop me. I looked at them stoically. "I'm not going to sacrifice the rest of my life for you." With that, I casually tossed the matchbox aside. I tilted my head up and looked at the surveillance camera mounted on the side of the neighbor's house. It had captured everything Mom and Dad had done to me. All I needed to do was make sure they were held accountable by the law. The look of sheer terror on Mom and Dad's faces instantly froze, giving way to raging fury at being fooled. Dad raised his hand to slap me across the face. "How dare you play games with me, you bitch?"I had been prepared for it. I stepped aside to dodge it. Dad struck nothing but air and staggered forward a few steps, nearly losing his balance. Without sparing him so much as a glance, I turned on my heel and walked away. "Get back here, Daphne!" Dad bellowed before catching up to me in a couple of bounds. "If you dare step out of this

"Daphne, have you lost your mind? What do you think you're doing?" Dad's voice trembled as he stared intently at the matchbox in my hand. The strong smell of gas filled the kitchen, making him instinctively cover his nose and mouth. Mom blanched, her trembling finger pointing at the matchbox in my hand. "Hurry up and throw that matchbox away, Daphne! Can't you smell the gas filling the kitchen? What if the whole place blows up?" she roared at me, her eyes locked on my every move. Meeting the panic and terror in their eyes, I couldn't help but chuckle. Mom and Dad were afraid of dying, too.Yet, they were completely fine with letting a murderer drag me away, allowing 17-year-old me to be consumed by the flames. Before I had regained consciousness, they had even taken one of my kidneys and given it to Leo.Catching the storm of emotions crashing in my eyes, Mom and Dad froze for a split second—as if suddenly realizing something—and their tone completely shifted. "Please don't do

Mom's hands stilled, and she fell silent. Then, she looked away, avoiding my expectant gaze. "That was just an accident," she said, her voice laced with guilt. "You're young and beautiful. If you marry Kieran, maybe he'll treat you better than your father and I ever did."A lump formed in my throat, and I bit my lip, unable to utter another word. So, she was well aware that she and Dad had treated me terribly all these years. Mom locked the balcony door from the outside. I bit through the inside of my lip, closing my eyes in helplessness as tears soaked through my pillow. My bag, which was out in the living room, still held the gifts I had bought for Mom and Dad with the wages I'd earned from two months of my summer job. However, did they ever see me as their family? I couldn't wrap my head around it. In a heartbeat, my chest felt tight and unbearably painful, and I passed out.…When I came to, the first thing that came into view was a pockmarked face. "Honey, you're finall
