Chapter 9 The End

One year later.

On the day Yuna's probation ended, she went to one specific place. It was the rundown apartment we lived in just after we got married.

The apartment building should have been demolished long ago, but for some reason, it had remained standing.

As she stood at the bottom of the stairwell, she looked up at the window on the fifth floor.

She stood there for a long time before finally ascending the steps.

The key was still hidden on the top of the door frame.

The apartment was covered in dust, thicker than before. Our wedding photo was still hanging on the wall.In the photo, Yuna was smiling brightly. I stood stiffly beside her, nervous enough that I did not seem to know what to do with my hands. She stared at the photo for a very long time before she took it down, wiped it free of dust, and stored it in her bag.She also took the photo stored on the side table in the bedroom.Once that was done, she crouched down beside her bed and bawled. "I'm sorry, Finn! I'm

  • Dead Men Don't Get Justice   Chapter 8 Justice Served

Yuna did not attend court on the day Joe's trial started. The case against her was still ongoing. As she had surrendered herself and paid all unpaid duties and taxes, the prosecutor called for leniency. Finally, she was sentenced to one year's imprisonment along with another year of probation.…Joe, on the other hand, was not as lucky. After all, he had planned a murder, cheated, and done so much more. Convicted of multiple crimes, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.During the trial, he had never once glanced at Yuna. When he was finally dragged off by the police officers, he suddenly turned around and called out to the audience. "Are you satisfied now, Finn? You tramp! Yuna, I won't ever forgive you!"Everyone in the courtroom was stunned. No one understood who he was talking to.Only I understood as I haunted the shadowy corner behind Yuna. Was I satisfied?I did not know. All I knew was that the moment Joe was dragged off, Yuna was trembling with tears as she sat i

When Yuna returned home, she locked herself up in the bathroom. She turned the shower all the way up and crouched beneath the spray. Water streamed down from the top of her head, making it impossible to tell whether the wetness on her face came from the shower or her tears. She stayed in there for nearly an hour. When she stepped out, her eyes were extremely puffy. However, there was a new look in her eyes. With a blank look, she called her assistant and thoroughly listed out her instructions. "Grab all the information we have on the businesses Joe was involved in all these years. Send it to me by tonight. Also, I want the customs declaration form for the batch of goods at the port. I don't care what price we have to pay."Moreover, go all out when it comes to Joe's authorization about the cargo. I'll bear the blame and expenses for it."Ten seconds passed in utter silence before her assistant replied, "Got it."After hanging up, Yuna turned on her computer. She began organizi

Yuna ended the call and drove toward Joe's apartment. This time, she did not knock. She entered the passcode and let herself in.There was no one in the living room, but the light in the study room was on.…Joe stood with his back to the door, his voice low as he spoke on the phone, but she could still hear every word."Yeah… I've settled Yuna. She can investigate, but she'll never find out it was me. Zayne was the one who did it back then, and he moved abroad last year. She will never find him."Finn? It doesn't matter whether or not he's dead. The point is to make everyone believe he did it. As long as his innocence is never proven, my reputation is clean."I'll think of some other solutions for his parents' ashes. We'll get rid of them once we get our hands on them. We can't leave any loose ends."He ended the call and turned around.Never could he have imagined Yuna would be standing right there in the doorway.Shock flashed across Joe's face, but it lasted only a second

  • Dead Men Don't Get Justice   Chapter 5 Failed Brakes

Yuna was in her office until the sky turned dark. The documents delivered by her assistant were sprawled out all over the floor. One by one, she examined them, reading until her hands trembled so hard that she could not even hold up paper. It was too much of a coincidence.Only she and Joe knew when I would be released. However, Serena just had to appear by the prison gates on the exact day of my discharge. Then, on a hilly road with no surveillance cameras, the brakes of an old van had failed. And just like that, two lives were gone.Everything was too much of a coincidence.Yuna shoved the documents into her bag. When she got to her feet, her legs were numb and wobbly. She leaned against her desk for long moments before she finally left. She did not visit Joe right away. Instead, she headed to the government office located on North Street.A woman in her fifties spoke to her. After learning why Yuna had come, the woman searched for a long time before finally digging out a

  • Dead Men Don't Get Justice   Chapter 4 Missed Calls Years Ago

Yuna stayed in Joe's apartment until midnight. The moment she left, the gentle and warm look on his face vanished. He returned to the couch and dialed a number with a scowl on his face. "Hey, it's me. Just where did Finn go? Yuna found out that his parents are dead. Now, she's searching everywhere for him like a madwoman."Whatever the person on the other end said only made Joe more impatient."I don't care where he's hiding! Find him! There's one more month left to the election. If no one takes the blame for that case, the federal officers will come after me first!"After a pause, he smirked."He wants to fake his death? If he had the nerve to do so, he wouldn't have taken the fall for me back then. He's an absolute loser, and losers value their lives the most. He wouldn't die."After ending the call, he slammed his phone back on the coffee table. Then, he took a swig of wine.I drifted before him, observing the frustrated and scheming look in his eyes. Suddenly, I found it
