Chapter 3

Author: Goldie Bloom
The fork slipped from Sharon's hand and hit the floor.

Everyone crowded around to read the news.

"Sharon," someone remarked, looking puzzled, "isn't that the center you sent Kyle to?"

Sharon's mind was in turmoil, her lips pressed into a tight line.

David's eyes flickered. He picked up Sharon's fork and said casually, "It's just one of those clickbait accounts blowing things out of proportion.

"I have a friend who went there, and he came back much more grounded. Now he's a model husband and father. The reform center must be doing too well. It probably threatened someone's interests, so they paid people to smear it.

The crowd immediately agreed. One of the guests commented, "David, you're the smartest one here. You always have great insights."

Sharon visibly relaxed and snorted. "Look, they even have interview clips with the so-called victims. It all looks so staged. These people are just looking for attention.

"Even before Kyle left, he kept whining about how sick he was and saying he wouldn't make it. When he comes back, he'll probably try to slander the place just like they did."

Turning to Adam, she added, "He's only refusing to come home because he's having too good a time there. Cut his allowance. Give him just enough to keep him from starving."

Sweat broke out across Adam's back, and he quickly nodded.

I knew exactly why he was so nervous. He was the one who suggested that Sharon had my hands badly injured and sent me to the Behavioral Reform Center.

Once I was there, Adam paid nothing beyond my tuition. He even told the instructors to give me "special treatment".

Seeing that there was no extra money to be made off me, the staff made an example of me to intimidate the others, taking turns tormenting me.

I was already weak after donating my kidney, and my hand injuries hadn't healed yet. That night, my wounds became infected, and I developed a high fever.

With my life on the line, a staff member called Sharon for me, but Adam answered.

"Ms. Griffin was right about you. You really are full of drama," he mocked over the phone. "Now you're pretending to be sick just like Mr. Middleton! Good thing Ms. Griffin told me not to bother with you.

"You know what? She just sent Mr. Middleton 200 thousand dollars for living expenses. They're a match made in heaven, so you might as well just die in there!"

Later that night, my body went into spasms, and I died in that reform center.

The mood at the table grew heavy again. Sharon had little appetite, and the meal ended in silence.

As they walked out, David draped an arm over her shoulders and said sweetly, "Wait, Sharon. I haven't seen Paula in a while. Can I come by your place? I miss her!"

Sharon had told me that David's family went bankrupt when he was five years old, so he had lived with her family since childhood, and Sharon's mother became his godmother.

Sharon always insisted they were just close friends and that there was nothing inappropriate between them. But was that kind of intimacy really not crossing the line?

Seeing Sharon hesitate, David coaxed her, "Are you worried Kyle will get mad? Don't worry. I'll be careful. He'll never know."

Sharon sighed helplessly and nodded.

I lowered my gaze and smiled bitterly.

She knew how much I valued having a home of my own after growing up in an orphanage. That was why we'd agreed not to let outsiders into our home. Yet David had always been the exception.

When they arrived, Sharon's mother, Paula Brown, came out in her wheelchair to welcome David.

He immediately sweet-talked her, making her burst into laughter. In the past three years, I'd never seen my mother-in-law this happy.

After exchanging pleasantries, Paula said to Sharon, "David's on break now. Shouldn't Kyle be coming home too? The caregiver doesn't take very good care of me. Kyle is much better at looking after me."

David leaned against her knees with a smile and said, "Paula, I can take care of you too. Let me give you a nice leg massage now."

Paula quickly grabbed his hands to stop him. "Your hands are too important for this kind of work! Kyle is used to waiting on people, so let him do it."

Her eyes were filled with hatred."David," she said through gritted teeth. With Sharon's help, the police soon tracked David down.He clearly hadn't expected everything to fall apart so quickly, his face twisting with bitter resentment. My parents tried to defend him. "That's impossible. Our son would never do something like this. Officer, please look into this again."Sharon's face was pale as she said, "I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. I lied to you. David isn't

Sharon stood frozen. When she finally processed what she'd heard, she grabbed the nurse and demanded, "What was the name of the man who donated the kidney?"The nurse thought for a moment and replied, "I think his last name was Walsh. Why?"Sharon's face went deathly pale. She fumbled for her phone and called the organ donation center."The person who donated a kidney to me… Was it Kyle Walsh?" she asked. The man on the other end fell silent for a moment before answering carefully, "I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to disclose that information."After Sharon pressed him several times, the man on the phone finally gave in. "Yes. Mr. Walsh asked us to keep it from you. He was afraid you wouldn't accept the kidney if you knew. We later heard the surgery went well and that you two got married. We hope you're happy together."Paula heard everything. Her face filled with shock. "So Kyle was the one who donated the kidney to you. But then how did David—"Before she could finish, Shar

Sharon's chest heaved with anger, her eyes bloodshot. "I sent him to learn how to be a proper man, and somehow he came out even worse!"A flicker of smugness crossed David's eyes.He got out of bed, picked up the folder, and said gently, "It can't be. Kyle loves you so much. He couldn't have done that. He's probably just trying to make you jealous. Sharon, let me go with you and find him."Seeing how understanding he was, Sharon was deeply moved. But after a long silence, she shook her head. "Forget it. Why should I bother looking for someone so heartless?"Just then, Sharon's phone rang."Hello, is this Mrs. Walsh? I'm calling from Oak Hill Funeral Home. I'm sorry to inform you that your husband Kyle Walsh's cremation has been completed, and his ashes are ready for collection."Sharon clenched her fists until her knuckles cracked. "I'll be right there," she said with a cold, fake smile. My heart sank. She was already furious, so that call would just sound like another one of m

David started talking about his time studying abroad."Sharon, remember when I first went overseas? You messaged me almost 100 times a day. My classmates all thought I had some crazy jealous girlfriend checking up on me."He smiled gently. "It wasn't until I convinced you to focus on work that you cut it down to ten."Sharon's hand trembled slightly. "Was it really that much?" she murmured."It was," David said softly. "Honestly, if it wasn't for your encouragement back then, I don't think I would've made it through."Something suddenly occurred to Sharon, and she looked up. "I didn't message Kyle once all semester. Is that why he's so mad?"Before David could say anything, she grabbed her coat and headed for the door.Paula called after her, asking where she was going.Sharon forced a smile and replied, "I'm going back to the reform center to look for Kyle. I think he's really angry this time. He doesn't reply to my messages at all."Adam stepped in, trying hard to stop her.

Sharon suddenly curled her lips into a wry smile. "You gave him way too much allowance every month. He went and got all this fake blood just to scare me and hide from me, and you didn't even do anything about it."She sighed softly and walked out of the dorm.Outside the building, the instructor said, "I told you, Kyle is dead."Sharon looked at him as if he were still putting on an act."I have to admit, you're a pretty good actor. Tell Kyle he almost fooled me and ask him to come out. He can stop hiding," she said. The instructor stared at her in disbelief. "He's really dead. He died on his first day here. Your family already sent someone to collect his body!"He sounded completely sincere, but Sharon still didn't believe him.Her patience finally ran out, and she lashed out. "Fine. Keep covering for him. Once I find him, I'll pull him out of this school. Your center won't get another cent from me!"After speaking, she stormed off.Adam let out a long sigh of relief and quic

Sharon shuddered violently. Her face turned so pale she looked ready to faint. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard. "What did you say?"I was just as confused as she was. After dying a painful death from my illness, my soul had left my body. The next thing I knew, I was at David's welcome-home party.I had no idea what had happened over the past few months or who had come to collect my body.Adam's eyes darted around. He immediately pointed at the instructor and snapped, "Stop talking nonsense. This is a legitimate school. How could anyone have died here? Are you even an employee?"Adam's words made something click for Sharon. She let out a cold laugh. "So there really are people inside the center taking bribes. No wonder negative news about you has been spreading like wildfire."She looked at the instructor arrogantly. "How much did Kyle pay you to lie to me? Faking his own death? I can't believe he'd come up with something like that."The instructor looked completely ba
