Chapter 4

Author: Goldie Bloom
"That son-in-law of mine is so ungrateful. We've supported him all these years, and all he cares about is getting his PhD and finding his biological parents so he can take care of them!" Paula added.

A wave of bitterness swept through me.

I'd spent those years trying to apply for Westbridge's PhD program, but that didn't mean I was living off Sharon's family.

I helped with research for my department and squeezed in whatever time I could to take care of the paralyzed Paula. I helped turn her over, massaged her shoulders, prepared nutritious meals for her, and put up with her unpredictable moods.

Sharon never paid for any of the household expenses. I had always used my own salary to cover them.

It turned out that the sweet, gentle mother-in-law I knew only saw me as a convenient caregiver and had plenty of complaints about me.

Surprisingly, Sharon cut Paula off, "Mom, drop it. If Kyle hears you, he'll throw another fit."

She turned and went to find the housekeeper, telling her to prepare the guest room for David.

Meanwhile, David strode straight into our master bedroom like he owned the place. He plopped down on our bed, his eyes gleaming with triumph.

When he saw our wedding photo on the nightstand, he scoffed under his breath. "Kyle, you're dead. How could you possibly compete with me now?"

A chill ran through me. I'd already sensed something was wrong when he defended the Behavioral Reform Center at dinner. Could there have been more to my death than I'd thought?

David began rummaging through everything in the bedroom, leaving the place a complete mess. Then, he suddenly stopped.

I walked over and froze when I saw him holding the unfinished dissertation I'd been working on.

His eyes lit up. He whipped out his phone, snapped pictures of every single page, and then ripped the research I'd poured my heart into to shreds.

Not long after, footsteps sounded behind him. Sharon walked in and stared at the mess.

David immediately threw himself into her arms, putting on a remorseful look.

"Sharon, I'm so sorry! I was feeling so weak that I stumbled and ruined Kyle's paper. I'll tape it back together right now. He won't be mad at me, will he?"

Sharon frowned slightly, but she was more concerned about David's health. "Don't say that. You wouldn't be in such poor health if you hadn't donated a kidney to me."

She glanced at the torn pages and said, "He spends every day in the lab and ignores this family. I was already sick of him writing this junk anyway. If it's ruined, then so be it."

I reached for the torn pieces of my dissertation in the trash, but my hand passed right through them again and again.

My heart ached.

I'd spent countless sleepless nights working on it. It was the work I'd poured my heart and soul into, the career I'd dreamed of building.

David, now emboldened by Sharon's support, pulled a small gold pendant from his pocket. He must have found it in my suitcase at some point. It was the only keepsake I had from before I went missing as a child.

Taking advantage of Sharon's affection for him, he said, "Sharon, I really like this. Can I have it?"

In the past, Sharon would have blindly agreed to anything he asked for. But this time, she frowned and instinctively snatched the gold pendant back, putting it in a drawer.

Seeing David staring at her in shock, Sharon quickly collected herself. "This is the only thing Kyle's parents left him. He treasures it and is always polishing it. If he realizes I've touched it, he'll make a huge fuss."

Just then, Paula came up in her wheelchair, looking strangely uneasy. "Sharon, there's a couple downstairs who say they're here to find their son."

My heart jolted. Could it be...

Sharon led David downstairs.

In the living room, an elegant, distinguished-looking couple sat on the couch. My heart raced as fragments of my foggy memories began to click into place.

The woman was dabbing her tears away with a handkerchief while saying, "My son and I were separated on the streets of Jasdon when he was five years old. We've spent 25 years searching for him. We finally found him here. Please, let us see him."

Maybe she really had loved me once, but it was too late now.The officer continued, "Adam also named David Middleton as the one who ordered him to send Kyle to the Behavioral Reform Center."Sharon's head snapped up. Her eyes were filled with hatred."David," she said through gritted teeth. With Sharon's help, the police soon tracked David down.He clearly hadn't expected everything to fall apart so quickly, his face twisting with bitter resentment. My parents tried to defend him. "That's impossible. Our son would never do something like this. Officer, please look into this again."Sharon's face was pale as she said, "I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. I lied to you. David isn't

Sharon stood frozen. When she finally processed what she'd heard, she grabbed the nurse and demanded, "What was the name of the man who donated the kidney?"The nurse thought for a moment and replied, "I think his last name was Walsh. Why?"Sharon's face went deathly pale. She fumbled for her phone and called the organ donation center."The person who donated a kidney to me… Was it Kyle Walsh?" she asked. The man on the other end fell silent for a moment before answering carefully, "I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to disclose that information."After Sharon pressed him several times, the man on the phone finally gave in. "Yes. Mr. Walsh asked us to keep it from you. He was afraid you wouldn't accept the kidney if you knew. We later heard the surgery went well and that you two got married. We hope you're happy together."Paula heard everything. Her face filled with shock. "So Kyle was the one who donated the kidney to you. But then how did David—"Before she could finish, Shar

Sharon's chest heaved with anger, her eyes bloodshot. "I sent him to learn how to be a proper man, and somehow he came out even worse!"A flicker of smugness crossed David's eyes.He got out of bed, picked up the folder, and said gently, "It can't be. Kyle loves you so much. He couldn't have done that. He's probably just trying to make you jealous. Sharon, let me go with you and find him."Seeing how understanding he was, Sharon was deeply moved. But after a long silence, she shook her head. "Forget it. Why should I bother looking for someone so heartless?"Just then, Sharon's phone rang."Hello, is this Mrs. Walsh? I'm calling from Oak Hill Funeral Home. I'm sorry to inform you that your husband Kyle Walsh's cremation has been completed, and his ashes are ready for collection."Sharon clenched her fists until her knuckles cracked. "I'll be right there," she said with a cold, fake smile. My heart sank. She was already furious, so that call would just sound like another one of m

David started talking about his time studying abroad."Sharon, remember when I first went overseas? You messaged me almost 100 times a day. My classmates all thought I had some crazy jealous girlfriend checking up on me."He smiled gently. "It wasn't until I convinced you to focus on work that you cut it down to ten."Sharon's hand trembled slightly. "Was it really that much?" she murmured."It was," David said softly. "Honestly, if it wasn't for your encouragement back then, I don't think I would've made it through."Something suddenly occurred to Sharon, and she looked up. "I didn't message Kyle once all semester. Is that why he's so mad?"Before David could say anything, she grabbed her coat and headed for the door.Paula called after her, asking where she was going.Sharon forced a smile and replied, "I'm going back to the reform center to look for Kyle. I think he's really angry this time. He doesn't reply to my messages at all."Adam stepped in, trying hard to stop her.

Sharon suddenly curled her lips into a wry smile. "You gave him way too much allowance every month. He went and got all this fake blood just to scare me and hide from me, and you didn't even do anything about it."She sighed softly and walked out of the dorm.Outside the building, the instructor said, "I told you, Kyle is dead."Sharon looked at him as if he were still putting on an act."I have to admit, you're a pretty good actor. Tell Kyle he almost fooled me and ask him to come out. He can stop hiding," she said. The instructor stared at her in disbelief. "He's really dead. He died on his first day here. Your family already sent someone to collect his body!"He sounded completely sincere, but Sharon still didn't believe him.Her patience finally ran out, and she lashed out. "Fine. Keep covering for him. Once I find him, I'll pull him out of this school. Your center won't get another cent from me!"After speaking, she stormed off.Adam let out a long sigh of relief and quic

Sharon shuddered violently. Her face turned so pale she looked ready to faint. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard. "What did you say?"I was just as confused as she was. After dying a painful death from my illness, my soul had left my body. The next thing I knew, I was at David's welcome-home party.I had no idea what had happened over the past few months or who had come to collect my body.Adam's eyes darted around. He immediately pointed at the instructor and snapped, "Stop talking nonsense. This is a legitimate school. How could anyone have died here? Are you even an employee?"Adam's words made something click for Sharon. She let out a cold laugh. "So there really are people inside the center taking bribes. No wonder negative news about you has been spreading like wildfire."She looked at the instructor arrogantly. "How much did Kyle pay you to lie to me? Faking his own death? I can't believe he'd come up with something like that."The instructor looked completely ba
