Chapter 2

Author: Goldie Bloom
I shuddered when I heard those heartbreaking words.

Back then, Sharon was the only one who said she believed in me. She told me not to do anything rash and encouraged me to try applying for the program again. Now, I realized that she was just trying to stop me from going after David.

Another guest chimed in, "Sharon, Kyle has such a terrible temper. He doesn't deserve you. David is the one for you. You've known each other since you were kids, and now he's become so successful. What are you waiting for?"

Sharon gave a vague reply. "David still has one semester left. We'll see."

She pulled out her phone. When she saw there were no missed calls, her face darkened. Turning to Adam, she asked, "Did you pass my message to Kyle? Why hasn't he called me yet?"

Before Adam could answer, Sharon's phone suddenly buzzed. Without even checking the caller, she picked it up with a confident smirk. "Kyle, you—"

But an unfamiliar man's voice came through, "Is this Ms. Sharon Griffin? We have some medical funds that need to be transferred to your account. Would you be able to receive them?"

Sharon frowned. "Who is this?"

The man explained gently, "Three years ago, you were in the late stages of kidney failure. Your husband, Mr. Walsh, sent 999 emails begging one of our medical specialists to operate on you.

"The doctor had already retired at the time, so Mr. Walsh flew out himself, spent his entire life savings, and knelt in the pouring rain for a day and a night, begging the doctor to treat you.

"We had never seen a man so devoted. Moved by his sincerity, the doctor made an exception and agreed to perform the surgery. He refused to accept payment at the time, so we put the money aside in a medical fund under Mr. Walsh's name.

"The fund has now reached the end of its holding period, and we wanted to return the money to Mr. Walsh, but we haven't been able to get in touch with him."

Three years ago, Sharon had suddenly fallen seriously ill. Her condition was so critical that even after a suitable kidney became available, no doctor in the country was willing to operate on her.

I did whatever it took to save her. I begged a doctor overseas to take her case, even spending hours on my knees in the rain, begging him to save her.

When Sharon finally came out of surgery, I cried tears of joy.

Back then, I never imagined that just a few months later, I'd face the greatest betrayal of my life.

The room fell silent as everyone took in what they'd just heard. After a long pause, someone finally spoke.

"We all thought Kyle had gone abroad on vacation and left you to fend for yourself. Who would've thought he'd go that far for you? Without that doctor, you might not have made it through the surgery."

Sharon gripped her phone so tightly that her fingers turned white. It took her a long moment to regain her composure before replying coldly, "I don't need the money. Donate it."

She hung up and scoffed. "Kyle was just trying to make himself look like a hero. David would never use something like this to make me feel that I owed him.

"When I was so sick I wanted to die, Kyle only helped me find a doctor. David was the one who actually risked his life to save me. His health was ruined because of that.

"And what did Kyle do? He's selfish and only thinks about himself. He even asked for a divorce over something so trivial!"

A wave of bitterness washed over me. I was the one who had donated my kidney to save her, not David.

I suffered from a congenital blood-clotting disorder, but I still risked my life to undergo the surgery for her.

When I woke up, I found Sharon fussing over David and thanking him over and over. No matter how many times I tried to explain, she thought I was trying to steal credit from him.

Later on, I did better than David on the first round of the PhD admissions process.

He immediately threatened to throw himself into a river. "Kyle, why am I always behind you? You're like a shadow hanging over my life! Now, I have to watch you go abroad while I'm stuck here in this broken body. I might as well just die!"

Those words made Sharon decide to help him take my place and study abroad. That was where the tragedy began.

The mood in the room grew heavy. Everyone raised their glasses, trying to lighten things up.

Someone picked up their phone and started scrolling through videos. They forgot to turn the volume down, and an electronic voice suddenly rang out, "Breaking news! The Behavioral Reform Center is under investigation amid allegations of abuse and criminal misconduct."

Her eyes were filled with hatred."David," she said through gritted teeth. With Sharon's help, the police soon tracked David down.He clearly hadn't expected everything to fall apart so quickly, his face twisting with bitter resentment. My parents tried to defend him. "That's impossible. Our son would never do something like this. Officer, please look into this again."Sharon's face was pale as she said, "I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh. I lied to you. David isn't

Sharon stood frozen. When she finally processed what she'd heard, she grabbed the nurse and demanded, "What was the name of the man who donated the kidney?"The nurse thought for a moment and replied, "I think his last name was Walsh. Why?"Sharon's face went deathly pale. She fumbled for her phone and called the organ donation center."The person who donated a kidney to me… Was it Kyle Walsh?" she asked. The man on the other end fell silent for a moment before answering carefully, "I'm sorry, but we're not allowed to disclose that information."After Sharon pressed him several times, the man on the phone finally gave in. "Yes. Mr. Walsh asked us to keep it from you. He was afraid you wouldn't accept the kidney if you knew. We later heard the surgery went well and that you two got married. We hope you're happy together."Paula heard everything. Her face filled with shock. "So Kyle was the one who donated the kidney to you. But then how did David—"Before she could finish, Shar

Sharon's chest heaved with anger, her eyes bloodshot. "I sent him to learn how to be a proper man, and somehow he came out even worse!"A flicker of smugness crossed David's eyes.He got out of bed, picked up the folder, and said gently, "It can't be. Kyle loves you so much. He couldn't have done that. He's probably just trying to make you jealous. Sharon, let me go with you and find him."Seeing how understanding he was, Sharon was deeply moved. But after a long silence, she shook her head. "Forget it. Why should I bother looking for someone so heartless?"Just then, Sharon's phone rang."Hello, is this Mrs. Walsh? I'm calling from Oak Hill Funeral Home. I'm sorry to inform you that your husband Kyle Walsh's cremation has been completed, and his ashes are ready for collection."Sharon clenched her fists until her knuckles cracked. "I'll be right there," she said with a cold, fake smile. My heart sank. She was already furious, so that call would just sound like another one of m

David started talking about his time studying abroad."Sharon, remember when I first went overseas? You messaged me almost 100 times a day. My classmates all thought I had some crazy jealous girlfriend checking up on me."He smiled gently. "It wasn't until I convinced you to focus on work that you cut it down to ten."Sharon's hand trembled slightly. "Was it really that much?" she murmured."It was," David said softly. "Honestly, if it wasn't for your encouragement back then, I don't think I would've made it through."Something suddenly occurred to Sharon, and she looked up. "I didn't message Kyle once all semester. Is that why he's so mad?"Before David could say anything, she grabbed her coat and headed for the door.Paula called after her, asking where she was going.Sharon forced a smile and replied, "I'm going back to the reform center to look for Kyle. I think he's really angry this time. He doesn't reply to my messages at all."Adam stepped in, trying hard to stop her.

Sharon suddenly curled her lips into a wry smile. "You gave him way too much allowance every month. He went and got all this fake blood just to scare me and hide from me, and you didn't even do anything about it."She sighed softly and walked out of the dorm.Outside the building, the instructor said, "I told you, Kyle is dead."Sharon looked at him as if he were still putting on an act."I have to admit, you're a pretty good actor. Tell Kyle he almost fooled me and ask him to come out. He can stop hiding," she said. The instructor stared at her in disbelief. "He's really dead. He died on his first day here. Your family already sent someone to collect his body!"He sounded completely sincere, but Sharon still didn't believe him.Her patience finally ran out, and she lashed out. "Fine. Keep covering for him. Once I find him, I'll pull him out of this school. Your center won't get another cent from me!"After speaking, she stormed off.Adam let out a long sigh of relief and quic

Sharon shuddered violently. Her face turned so pale she looked ready to faint. She couldn't believe what she'd just heard. "What did you say?"I was just as confused as she was. After dying a painful death from my illness, my soul had left my body. The next thing I knew, I was at David's welcome-home party.I had no idea what had happened over the past few months or who had come to collect my body.Adam's eyes darted around. He immediately pointed at the instructor and snapped, "Stop talking nonsense. This is a legitimate school. How could anyone have died here? Are you even an employee?"Adam's words made something click for Sharon. She let out a cold laugh. "So there really are people inside the center taking bribes. No wonder negative news about you has been spreading like wildfire."She looked at the instructor arrogantly. "How much did Kyle pay you to lie to me? Faking his own death? I can't believe he'd come up with something like that."The instructor looked completely ba
