The library door clicked shut behind me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

The study room was quiet, save for the faint hum of the air conditioner and the occasional rustle of pages from students outside.

Leon had already made himself comfortable.

He slouched in the chair opposite mine, one arm draped lazily over the backrest while his phone occupied all of his attention.

Not once did he look up.

I placed my books on the table and pulled out my notebook.

Taking a slow breath, I reminded

I barely slept that night. Not because I was worried about Statistics. At this point, Statistics was the least of my problems. It was Leon’s reaction that kept replaying in my head.Okay.That was it. One word.No argument. No sarcastic comment. No attempt to convince me. He had simply looked at me for a few seconds, said okay, and walked away.Somehow, that was worse.By the time I got to school the next morning, I had convinced myself that I was overthinking it. Leon had no reason to care about my plans with Jaxton. He was my housemate, my unwilling tutoring partner, and unfortunately, the captain of the basketball team whose academic problems had somehow become my responsibility. That was all.At least, that was what I kept telling myself.I was standing by my locker when Jaxton appeared beside me, holding two bottles of juice.“I figured you might need this after yesterday,” he said, handing one to me. “You looked like you were ready to throw a Statistics textbook at someone.”I l

A Different Kind of Problem I woke up the next morning with one thought in my head. I was done with Leon Caster. At least, that was what I told myself while getting dressed. The problem was that I knew I wasn't actually done with him. As long as Professor Bennett had me tutoring him, Leon was going to be part of my life whether I liked it or not. I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs, hoping to have a quiet breakfast. Unfortunately, Leon was already there. He was sitting at the kitchen island, scrolling through his phone while his mother prepared breakfast. The moment I walked in, his eyes lifted from the screen and followed me to the table. "Morning," I said. "Morning." I sat beside my mom and reached for a glass of juice. For a few seconds, everything was quiet. Then Leon spoke. "You're tutoring me after school." I nearly sighed into my breakfast. "I know." "Just making sure." I looked at him. "You seem very concerned that I might forget." He shrugged. "You forget

What Was That About? Leon stopped beside our table, his eyes moving from me to Jaxton and then to Keena. For a few seconds, nobody said anything. The strange tension from earlier seemed to return all at once, and I couldn't understand why Leon was staring at us like we'd done something wrong. Keena was the first to speak. "You look angry." Leon looked at her. "I'm not." She gave him a skeptical smile. "You always say that when you are." "Maybe you should stop assuming you know what I'm thinking." Her smile disappeared slightly. Jaxton leaned back in his chair, watching the two of them. "Should we be worried?" Leon finally looked at him. "No." "Good." Jaxton returned his attention to his food. I glanced between Leon and Keena, wondering what exactly had just happened. They clearly knew each other well, but there was something uncomfortable between them that I couldn't quite put my finger on. Keena picked up her drink and stood. "I'm leaving." Leon stepped aside to let

I barely slept that night. Keena's questions kept running through my mind, but Leon's warning bothered me even more. He hadn't explained why I should stay away from her, and knowing Leon, I doubted he would give me an answer even if I asked. The next morning, I decided I was done trying to figure him out. If Leon wanted to be mysterious, that was his problem. I had enough of my own. I walked into the kitchen and found my mom already sitting at the table with Mrs. Caster. They were talking and laughing, while Leon sat across from them, scrolling through his phone. Mrs. Caster looked up when I entered. "Good morning, sweetheart. Come and eat before you're late." "Good morning." I sat down and reached for the plate in front of me. I could feel Leon's eyes on me, but when I looked up, he was staring at his phone again. I ignored him. At least, I tried to. "Are you going to school with Leon today?" my mom asked. I looked at him. "Apparently." Leon finally looked up. "Appar

I couldn't stop thinking about the note Leon had slipped onto my desk. You're changing, Alyson. I had read those four words so many times that I could practically see them whenever I closed my eyes. I wasn't sure whether I should be annoyed that he had noticed or worried about what he planned to do about it. When the final bell rang, I quickly packed my books and headed toward the hallway. I wanted to get out before Leon could find another reason to remind me about tutoring, but I barely made it past the classroom door before someone stepped in front of me. "Leaving already?" I looked up and found Keena leaning against the wall. "Yes. I have somewhere to be." She smiled. "With Jaxton?" I frowned. "Why do you care?" "I don't." Her answer came too quickly. I adjusted my backpack. "Then why are you asking?" Keena pushed herself away from the wall and walked beside me. "I'm just curious. You've been here for barely any time, and suddenly you're always with him." "He's my fri

Something Has Changed I woke up the next morning feeling strangely proud of myself. I had actually stood up to Leon. It hadn't been some dramatic argument, and I hadn't exactly won anything, but for once, I hadn't backed down. Maybe that was what I needed. Maybe I needed to stop being afraid of every reaction he might have. I got dressed and headed downstairs, expecting the usual uncomfortable breakfast. Instead, Leon wasn't there. I looked around the kitchen. "Where's Leon?" I asked before I could stop myself. Mrs. Caster glanced at me. "He's already left. He had basketball practice early this morning." "Oh." I took a seat. For some reason, I felt relieved. "Are you expecting him?" my mom teased. "No." I immediately looked down at my plate. "I was just asking." She smiled but didn't say anything else. I focused on my breakfast, trying not to think about the fact that I had actually been looking for him. That was ridiculous. By the time I reached school, I had a
