I barely slept that night.

Keena's questions kept running through my mind, but Leon's warning bothered me even more. He hadn't explained why I should stay away from her, and knowing Leon, I doubted he would give me an answer even if I asked.

The next morning, I decided I was done trying to figure him out.

If Leon wanted to be mysterious, that was his problem.

I had enough of my own.

I walked into the kitchen and found my mom already sitting at the table with Mrs. Caster. They were talking

Caster. They were talking and laughing, while Leon sat across from them, scrolling through his phone. Mrs. Caster looked up when I entered. "Good morning, sweetheart. Come and eat before you're late." "Good morning." I sat down and reached for the plate in front of me. I could feel Leon's eyes on me, but when I looked up, he was staring at his phone again. I ignored him. At least, I tried to. "Are you going to school with Leon today?" my mom asked. I looked at him. "Apparently." Leon finally looked up. "Appar

I couldn't stop thinking about the note Leon had slipped onto my desk. You're changing, Alyson. I had read those four words so many times that I could practically see them whenever I closed my eyes. I wasn't sure whether I should be annoyed that he had noticed or worried about what he planned to do about it. When the final bell rang, I quickly packed my books and headed toward the hallway. I wanted to get out before Leon could find another reason to remind me about tutoring, but I barely made it past the classroom door before someone stepped in front of me. "Leaving already?" I looked up and found Keena leaning against the wall. "Yes. I have somewhere to be." She smiled. "With Jaxton?" I frowned. "Why do you care?" "I don't." Her answer came too quickly. I adjusted my backpack. "Then why are you asking?" Keena pushed herself away from the wall and walked beside me. "I'm just curious. You've been here for barely any time, and suddenly you're always with him." "He's my fri

Something Has Changed I woke up the next morning feeling strangely proud of myself. I had actually stood up to Leon. It hadn't been some dramatic argument, and I hadn't exactly won anything, but for once, I hadn't backed down. Maybe that was what I needed. Maybe I needed to stop being afraid of every reaction he might have. I got dressed and headed downstairs, expecting the usual uncomfortable breakfast. Instead, Leon wasn't there. I looked around the kitchen. "Where's Leon?" I asked before I could stop myself. Mrs. Caster glanced at me. "He's already left. He had basketball practice early this morning." "Oh." I took a seat. For some reason, I felt relieved. "Are you expecting him?" my mom teased. "No." I immediately looked down at my plate. "I was just asking." She smiled but didn't say anything else. I focused on my breakfast, trying not to think about the fact that I had actually been looking for him. That was ridiculous. By the time I reached school, I had a

For the first time in days, I didn't feel like I was running away from something. I sat across from Jaxton at the smoothie shop, staring at the menu while he tried to convince me that the most expensive drink was obviously the best choice. "You're not seriously considering that one," I said. He looked offended. "Why not?" "Because it's almost twice the price of mine." "Exactly. Twice the price means twice as good." "That's not how anything works." "Let me have this." I laughed and shook my head. "Fine. But when you realize it tastes terrible, don't blame me." He grinned. "Deal." For the next few minutes, Leon was the furthest thing from my mind. We talked about school, complained about our professors, and argued over which movie was better between two movies neither of us had actually watched recently. It was easy. Too easy. I hadn't realized how badly I needed an afternoon like this until I was finally having one. Jaxton rested his elbows on the table

  • Dear Bully, you are too late    chapter 15

For the first time since I moved into the Caster house, I woke up looking forward to going to school. Not because of the classes. Definitely not because of Statistics. I had spent most of the previous night thinking about the plans Jaxton and I had made. After yesterday's failed attempt, I was determined not to let anything ruin them again. Today, I was getting my smoothie. No tutoring. No interruptions. No Leon. At least, that was the plan. I walked into the kitchen with a small smile on my face, only for it to disappear when I saw Leon already sitting at the table. He glanced up briefly. "Morning." "Morning." That was it. No sarcastic comment. No warning. Not even a mention of yesterday. I sat down beside my mom and reached for a piece of toast. Mrs. Caster smiled at me. "You seem happy this morning." "I'm just in a good mood." Leon continued eating as if he hadn't heard her. I glanced at him. For some reason, his silence made me more suspicious than his usual r

  • Dear Bully, you are too late    chapter 14

By the time the final lecture ended, I was already thinking about leaving campus. Not because I was excited to go home.Quite the opposite.I had been counting down the minutes until I could finally get out of the classroom and forget about Statistics, tutoring, and, most importantly, Leon Caster.I shoved my books into my bag as the professor dismissed us and stood up."Alyson."I turned around.Jaxton was standing beside my desk, holding his backpack."You heading home?""Eventually."He smiled. "Good. Because I have an idea."I raised an eyebrow."That sounds suspicious.""It isn't.""That's exactly what someone with a suspicious idea would say."He laughed."There’s a smoothie place not far from here. I thought we could go for a while before you head home."I hesitated. The thought of spending an afternoon with Jaxton sounded so much better than sitting in a library with Leon while he pretended not to care about Statistics."Okay."His smile widened."Okay?""Okay.""Great.
