A few days later

Maybelline Walter POV

My heart hammered against my chest as I stood in front of the company, my fingers tightened firmly around the handle of my handbag. I wasn't sure if I was ready to face my boss after what happened a few days ago, but on second thought, I needed to resume work. This was my only source of income and I couldn't just give it up like that. Not when I have bills to pay.

After what happened that night, I lied to Mr. Miles that I was sick and took one week off.

"Just pretend nothing happened," Taking a deep breath, I proceeded into the compound and just the sight of my boss's car made my heart skip a beat, but thinking about how he would look at me later made it even worse.

I braced myself up and proceeded toward the elevator which took me to the third floor where my office is located. I was relieved when I walked inside my office and didn't find Mr. Miles around, but my happiness was soon cut short the moment the door opened and he walked in.

My breath stopped abruptly and my heartbeat slowed down until it was barely beating. I felt like my soul left my body and like a dead person, I just sat on my chair, not knowing how to react. I was supposed to stand up and greet him as usual, but my strength left me and I couldn't move my body.

"You came late to the office today," His deep baritone voice made me hold my breath as it broke the last piece of confidence in me.

"Uhm..." I stuttered and swallowed nothing when I couldn't come up with anything.

"Send my schedule for the week to my desk and cancel all my appointments for today. Don't keep me waiting," I wasn't expecting less of him for someone who had always been grumpy, but what surprised me was the fact that he was acting like nothing happened. Could it be that he didn't remember a thing about what happened that night? I asked myself but quickly dismissed the thought because no way that could ever happen.

"Alright, Sir. I will do..." I couldn't finish my statement before he walked into his office and closed the door behind him. I breathed out in relief and stared into space. My heart hammered hard against my chest like it was trying to force itself out of me in fear.

My hands trembled as I worked on his schedule and compiled them. It took me fifteen minutes to finish everything, and when I was done, I arranged them in a file and left for his office.

"Come in," His deep voice sounded from inside, and I breathed deeply before I pushed the door open and walked inside. Mr. Miles, as usual, was seated behind his desk, his attention all on his desktop as his fingers moved slowly on the keyboards.

He looked perfect in the black suit he was cladded in as though it was tailored for him alone. His raven hair was styled beautifully. Mr. Miles was the definition of perfection. He was a good-looking thirty-two-year-old bachelor, wealthy and popular CEO of MG Tech Group, the most successful tech company in the States. He was every woman's dream, but not me though. While other women would do anything to be with him, Mr. Miles even in his perfection was nothing close to my kind of man, and it was quite unfortunate that my fate was entangled with him at a point.

I managed to brush my thoughts away as I stood in front of the desk and looked down at him.

"Drop the files and leave," He instructed me, his gaze never left his desktop.

"Uhm... Sir..." I found myself calling his attention after I dropped the file as instructed.

"Yes?" He finally raised his gaze to look at me, and as his pair of charming brown eyes pierced into mine, my breath hitched subconsciously.

"Is there a problem?" He asked me when I didn't say anything, and I just shook my head. I wanted to be sure he didn't remember what happened days ago, but didn't know how to start everything. Oh, Sir, we had sex three days ago, don't you remember? I couldn't have told him that, right?

"No... nothing, Sir,"

"You may leave then," He replied to me grumpily and I nodded. Turning to leave, his cold voice sounded through my ears and made me stop abruptly.

"May..."

"Sir?" I quickly turned to face him, and he was now reclining on his chair.

He seemed to have thought deeply about whatever he was going to say to me, and that made me nervous as many questions came running through my mind.

"Were you at The Blue Pyramid club last week?" He asked after a long silence, and my heart skipped a beat. For the next few seconds, I stared back at him, not knowing what to say. I had no idea if I should deny being there or tell the truth. What if I denied it and he turned out to remember everything that happened that night? What would happen if I told him the truth? Won't he think I'm a cheap whore?

"Never mind. It couldn't be you," I was still thinking of what to say to him when he waved his hand in the air dismissively, and it felt like I had just narrowly escaped death.

"Call me if you need anything, Sir," I bowed slightly to him then turned and advanced toward the door. Just before I left his office, I looked back at him and found he had a confused expression on his face like he didn't remember anything.

"That was a close one," I breathed out when I got to my office. I felt relieved that he didn't remember anything. At least I would be able to come to work freely like nothing happened.

I sat behind my desk and resumed work.

The rest of my day in the office was boring and I was glad as the closing time approached.

"I have somewhere to be, May. Wrap things up here when you are done. Make sure you come to the office early tomorrow. I don't want to come here before you," Mr. Miles uttered coldly when he walked into my office, and without waiting for my reply, he sauntered toward the door and exited my office. I sighed briefly.

I was barely wrapping things up in the office when my phone started to ring and I quickly swiped the answer button when I saw that it was Lily, my best friend.

"Hey, baby girl," I barely smile, forcing myself to act like everything was fine.

"Are you closed from work already?" Her voice sounded from the other end.

"Yes, I just wrapped things up here. Are you back from work already?" I asked her. Lily works in a hospital as a junior nurse.

"Yes, I just got home,"

"Did you get my test result from the doctor? I asked him to give it to you," I asked her as I grabbed my handbag from the table and headed toward the door. I was feeling sick lately, so I went for a general check-up yesterday. I took a contraceptive after the incident a few days ago, so I was sure that it couldn't be pregnancy. I wasn't going to do a pregnancy test if not that the doctor suggested I did. Well, I was sure I wasn't pregnant.

"Yes, I did,"

"What does it say?" I asked her curiously as I stepped out of my office and strode down the walkway that led to the elevator.

"You'll see when you get home. I'm going over to your house now to make dinner for us. See you around," She rushed her words, and the call disconnected before I could say something else.

Getting a cab home was going to be difficult since it was on a Monday, so I just strode down to the bus stop where I waited for the bus that arrived ten minutes later and the ride home began.

My thoughts were diversified without any direction. I wasn't supposed to be worried about it, but I couldn't help it. How come he didn't remember what happened? Was he drunk too? What was my boss doing at such a club when he was supposed to be in a club that rich people like him would go to? I asked myself a series of questions, but in the end, my questions were left unanswered.

I pressed the button close to where I was seated in the bus when it got to the place I was supposed to alight, and after it stopped, I stepped out of it along with some of the passengers who were also dropping there.

Curious to see the test result, I hastened my step and soon got home.

"Finally! You are home," Lily smiled at me when I walked into the living room of my apartment where I met her seated on the couch and eating cup noodles as she watched 'My Demon' a Kdrama she was so addicted to.

"Hmm. Where is the test result, Lily?" I asked, about to be eaten up by curiosity.

"Relax, May..."

"Where is it, please?" I demanded.

"I'll go get it for you," She rolled her eyes then stood up and dragged herself into the room. She came back about two minutes later with the test result and threw it on my body as she slumped beside me on the couch.

"You didn't check it?" I asked her surprisingly when I saw that it was still sealed.

"The fact that we are friends and I work at that hospital doesn't mean I can invade your privacy. You are our patient, and it's not something professional to do," She reminded me, and I rolled my eyes.

Anxious, I quickly tore the file open and reached for the paper. I glanced through it, but I soon regretted ever checking it when my eyes met with what I wasn't supposed to ever see.

I blinked my eyes a few times to be sure they weren't deceiving me, but when I opened them, I could see the positive pregnancy result in my hand.

"Wh... what's this?" I stuttered as my heart sank into my stomach. This wasn't supposed to happen. How did I get pregnant when I took pills after the incident?
