A few days later
Maybelline Walter POVMy heart hammered against my chest as I stood in front of the company, my fingers tightened firmly around the handle of my handbag. I wasn't sure if I was ready to face my boss after what happened a few days ago, but on second thought, I needed to resume work. This was my only source of income and I couldn't just give it up like that. Not when I have bills to pay. After what happened that night, I lied to Mr. Miles that I was sick and took one week off."Just pretend nothing happened," Taking a deep breath, I proceeded into the compound and just the sight of my boss's car made my heart skip a beat, but thinking about how he would look at me later made it even worse.I braced myself up and proceeded toward the elevator which took me to the third floor where my office is located. I was relieved when I walked inside my office and didn't find Mr. Miles around, but my happiness was soon cut short the moment the door opened and he walked in.My breath stopped abruptly and my heartbeat slowed down until it was barely beating. I felt like my soul left my body and like a dead person, I just sat on my chair, not knowing how to react. I was supposed to stand up and greet him as usual, but my strength left me and I couldn't move my body."You came late to the office today," His deep baritone voice made me hold my breath as it broke the last piece of confidence in me."Uhm..." I stuttered and swallowed nothing when I couldn't come up with anything."Send my schedule for the week to my desk and cancel all my appointments for today. Don't keep me waiting," I wasn't expecting less of him for someone who had always been grumpy, but what surprised me was the fact that he was acting like nothing happened. Could it be that he didn't remember a thing about what happened that night? I asked myself but quickly dismissed the thought because no way that could ever happen."Alright, Sir. I will do..." I couldn't finish my statement before he walked into his office and closed the door behind him. I breathed out in relief and stared into space. My heart hammered hard against my chest like it was trying to force itself out of me in fear.My hands trembled as I worked on his schedule and compiled them. It took me fifteen minutes to finish everything, and when I was done, I arranged them in a file and left for his office."Come in," His deep voice sounded from inside, and I breathed deeply before I pushed the door open and walked inside. Mr. Miles, as usual, was seated behind his desk, his attention all on his desktop as his fingers moved slowly on the keyboards. He looked perfect in the black suit he was cladded in as though it was tailored for him alone. His raven hair was styled beautifully. Mr. Miles was the definition of perfection. He was a good-looking thirty-two-year-old bachelor, wealthy and popular CEO of MG Tech Group, the most successful tech company in the States. He was every woman's dream, but not me though. While other women would do anything to be with him, Mr. Miles even in his perfection was nothing close to my kind of man, and it was quite unfortunate that my fate was entangled with him at a point.I managed to brush my thoughts away as I stood in front of the desk and looked down at him."Drop the files and leave," He instructed me, his gaze never left his desktop."Uhm... Sir..." I found myself calling his attention after I dropped the file as instructed."Yes?" He finally raised his gaze to look at me, and as his pair of charming brown eyes pierced into mine, my breath hitched subconsciously."Is there a problem?" He asked me when I didn't say anything, and I just shook my head. I wanted to be sure he didn't remember what happened days ago, but didn't know how to start everything. Oh, Sir, we had sex three days ago, don't you remember? I couldn't have told him that, right?"No... nothing, Sir,""You may leave then," He replied to me grumpily and I nodded. Turning to leave, his cold voice sounded through my ears and made me stop abruptly."May...""Sir?" I quickly turned to face him, and he was now reclining on his chair. He seemed to have thought deeply about whatever he was going to say to me, and that made me nervous as many questions came running through my mind."Were you at The Blue Pyramid club last week?" He asked after a long silence, and my heart skipped a beat. For the next few seconds, I stared back at him, not knowing what to say. I had no idea if I should deny being there or tell the truth. What if I denied it and he turned out to remember everything that happened that night? What would happen if I told him the truth? Won't he think I'm a cheap whore?"Never mind. It couldn't be you," I was still thinking of what to say to him when he waved his hand in the air dismissively, and it felt like I had just narrowly escaped death."Call me if you need anything, Sir," I bowed slightly to him then turned and advanced toward the door. Just before I left his office, I looked back at him and found he had a confused expression on his face like he didn't remember anything."That was a close one," I breathed out when I got to my office. I felt relieved that he didn't remember anything. At least I would be able to come to work freely like nothing happened.I sat behind my desk and resumed work. The rest of my day in the office was boring and I was glad as the closing time approached."I have somewhere to be, May. Wrap things up here when you are done. Make sure you come to the office early tomorrow. I don't want to come here before you," Mr. Miles uttered coldly when he walked into my office, and without waiting for my reply, he sauntered toward the door and exited my office. I sighed briefly.I was barely wrapping things up in the office when my phone started to ring and I quickly swiped the answer button when I saw that it was Lily, my best friend."Hey, baby girl," I barely smile, forcing myself to act like everything was fine."Are you closed from work already?" Her voice sounded from the other end."Yes, I just wrapped things up here. Are you back from work already?" I asked her. Lily works in a hospital as a junior nurse."Yes, I just got home,""Did you get my test result from the doctor? I asked him to give it to you," I asked her as I grabbed my handbag from the table and headed toward the door. I was feeling sick lately, so I went for a general check-up yesterday. I took a contraceptive after the incident a few days ago, so I was sure that it couldn't be pregnancy. I wasn't going to do a pregnancy test if not that the doctor suggested I did. Well, I was sure I wasn't pregnant."Yes, I did,""What does it say?" I asked her curiously as I stepped out of my office and strode down the walkway that led to the elevator."You'll see when you get home. I'm going over to your house now to make dinner for us. See you around," She rushed her words, and the call disconnected before I could say something else.Getting a cab home was going to be difficult since it was on a Monday, so I just strode down to the bus stop where I waited for the bus that arrived ten minutes later and the ride home began. My thoughts were diversified without any direction. I wasn't supposed to be worried about it, but I couldn't help it. How come he didn't remember what happened? Was he drunk too? What was my boss doing at such a club when he was supposed to be in a club that rich people like him would go to? I asked myself a series of questions, but in the end, my questions were left unanswered.I pressed the button close to where I was seated in the bus when it got to the place I was supposed to alight, and after it stopped, I stepped out of it along with some of the passengers who were also dropping there.Curious to see the test result, I hastened my step and soon got home."Finally! You are home," Lily smiled at me when I walked into the living room of my apartment where I met her seated on the couch and eating cup noodles as she watched 'My Demon' a Kdrama she was so addicted to."Hmm. Where is the test result, Lily?" I asked, about to be eaten up by curiosity."Relax, May...""Where is it, please?" I demanded."I'll go get it for you," She rolled her eyes then stood up and dragged herself into the room. She came back about two minutes later with the test result and threw it on my body as she slumped beside me on the couch."You didn't check it?" I asked her surprisingly when I saw that it was still sealed."The fact that we are friends and I work at that hospital doesn't mean I can invade your privacy. You are our patient, and it's not something professional to do," She reminded me, and I rolled my eyes.Anxious, I quickly tore the file open and reached for the paper. I glanced through it, but I soon regretted ever checking it when my eyes met with what I wasn't supposed to ever see.I blinked my eyes a few times to be sure they weren't deceiving me, but when I opened them, I could see the positive pregnancy result in my hand."Wh... what's this?" I stuttered as my heart sank into my stomach. This wasn't supposed to happen. How did I get pregnant when I took pills after the incident?Chapter 46 May POV "Aren't you coming inside? I should offer you juice to take," I bent over the car window once I alighted from the car. Lily had just come to drop me off at the front of the gate. "It's late already. Let's make it some other time. I need to head home early so I can wake up early for work tomorrow," She reminded me, and I nodded. "That's fine. When are we going to see eachother again?" "I don't know yet, but I'll find a way to see you during the week or by the weekend. Bye! And don't forget to make progress with my in-law. Stop being so guarded," I rolled my eyes as I straightened my back. "Bye," She chuckled as she wined up the glass. I turned and headed inside once she drove off. It was already 7:30pm, and everywhere was dark. I was just about to head to the entrance door when my phone started to ring, and I checked to see that the caller was Miles. This was the fifth time he was calling me in thirty minutes, asking where I was. Since I was alread
Chapter 45May POVLily's familiar car approached as I stood in front of the gate, waiting for her to show up and pick me up so we could leave already. She soon pulled over in front of me, then wined down the glass and crooked her neck out with a warm smile on her face."Have I been keeping you and my godchild waiting?""You bet," I rolled my eyes as I walked over to the other side of the car and hopped in the front seat with her."Be careful with that, please. You don't want to hurt my godchild," She gasped sharply and teased me as I struggled with the seatbelt."Thanks for your concern, but shut your mouth," I rolled my eyes at her and relaxed on the chair once I was able to fasten my seatbelt."So, tell me... What did you say you wanted to tell me? I came down here because of that, so don't keep me waiting," She turned her attention to me with an anxious look on her face like she was desperate to hear whatever gist I had for her, and of course, I knew she was desperate for it. Tha
Chapter 44After a long ride, Lilly arrived at the hospital and pulled over at the parking lot."Ugh! Finally! I thought I was never going to get here," She breathed out tiredly as she removed her car keys, tossed it inside her handbag, grabbed the small plastic bag beside her, and stepped out of the car."Hey, Lily. You look good as always," Lily couldn't hide her excitement when he colleague complimented her as soon as she stepped into the hospital."Thank you," She smiled and proceeded to her office."Hey, Lily," One of the male nurses smiled at her as he walked toward her in the opposite direction."Hey, Donald,""Wow! You're looking beautiful as always. Is there any special occasion? You look different," Donald raised his eyebrows after he checked her out. Although she has always been a gorgeous young lady, but she looked really different. Unlike every other days she would go to work with no makeup on, it was different today. Her appearance was evident that she really took her ti
Chapter 43"I know I was too harsh on her, but why would she say that to me?" Miles ran his fingers through his hair frustratingly as he paced restlessly in his room."I mean..." He paused and slumped on his bed, his fingers sinking into his hair."I'm not that bad, am I? Is she just mad at me or am I really not her type?" Thinking about everything she had said to him earlier really hurt no matter how he tried to push it away. "But I already apologized to her that I was sorry for saying those words to her. Why would she be so harsh on me?" He muttered and breathed in and out.'You started it all, Miles. You shouldn't be complaining' His subconscious mind reminded him, and he groaned as he dragged himself up to his feet and dashed out of the room.A few minutes later, Miles was standing in front of the door, contemplating on whether or not to knock on the door. What if she was still mad at him for saying that? What if she really didn't want to see him?'She already paid you back. She
Chapter 42May Walter POV'I'm resigning soon, and I need you to take over my companies as the new CEO' Mr. Williams's words played in my head as I stood at the side of the road, waiting for a cab to take me home. Many questions popped up in my head. Why me? Does he not have other kids? How could he trust me when we just met? Just because I'm his daughter doesn't mean that I'll be good to him, don't you think so?'I will have my driver go drop you off' He had offered earlier, but I declined immediately before I left his house. Maybe I should've agreed to it because it's really difficult to get a cab here since it was close to an estate. My phone beeped, and I hesitantly checked to see that it was a text from him.'Hoping to hear from you soon' I rolled my eyes and kept my phone away after I read through the text.My phone vibrated in my my pocket a few minutes later, and I cursed out silently as I reached for it, thinking it was Mr. Williams calling me yet again, but I quickly swiped
Chapter 41May Walter POV"Wife, I made breakfast. You should come to the dining let's eat together," Miles's voice sounded from outside a few minutes after I stepped out of the bathroom."Alright. I'll be there in a couple of minutes,""I'll be waiting," I heard his receding footsteps afterwards, and I presumed he must've gone back. It's been five days since we did the DNA test thing, and we were supposed to get the result today. For the umpteenth time, I picked up my phone and checked to see if my acclaimed Dad had sent me a text, but he didn't. I was grateful he didn't text me all this while just as I had demanded, but I was nervous since the result will be out today."Don't be nervous, May. You'll get over this," I assured myself and took a deep long breath before I walked out of my room and headed to the dining room to join Miles. My mouth salivated as the aroma of food welcomed me downstairs."You're here... Come have a seat," Miles didn't cease to be the sweet husband that alw
