MAVERICK

I never gambled. I’d never made reckless bets. I sure as hell had never waited for a ghost before.

Yet, here I was. Sitting in the grand ballroom of the charity gala that had been organized by my father, surrounded by Seattle’s elite, my whiskey untouched as I stared occasionally at the door.

Waiting for Iris.

Call it wishful thinking, but when I sent a text to Iris three days ago, I’d hoped that she would show up. I took my phone out, opening up Iris’s chat.

The last message was from me. The night after our dinner, I’d gotten hopeful when she said she would think about it.

So I’d sent her a text:

‘Charity gala, Sunday, 9pm. If you ever change your mind, you’ll find me there.’

It was a long shot. I never took risks like that, but something about Iris Blake made me want to break my own rules. She was the best option for this. I had no other choice.

She should have been here by now. Iris was supposed to want this as much as I wanted. She was supposed to crave revenge just lik

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE: FLASHBACK 2

MAVERICKFIFTEEN YEARS OLD The air in the Sinclair mansion always felt like it had sharp teeth. Even when it was completely silent, you could feel it biting into your skin. And that night, it bit even more than usual. Deeper. My back ached. The fresh lashes still throbbed, and even without turning to look at myself in the mirror, I knew that there were deep, red gashes across my back. They never had time to heal. Ever. Because every few days, my father would take the whip to my skin, lashing me for reasons that would never make sense to anybody. He’d used the wire hanger this time. Said I’d disrespected him by not responding when he called me.But I hadn’t heard him. I was in the basement, fixing the coding on a server that I’d built from scraps. The same basement where he would lock me for days on end, sending the maid to bring me food and water. It used to be Tania, but now, she was with grandfather. He was sick and she needed to be there with him.Blood trickled from my lip, and I

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE: FLASHBACK 1

MAVERICKTwelve Years Old: The first thing I remember was the smell. It wasn’t blood. I mean, not just blood. There was a sour, stale smell. Like metal and perfume and something else I didn’t have words for at the time.I was barefoot, my vision blurry and my T-shirt twisted around my body as I stumbled through the darkness into the living room.I didn’t make it five steps before I tripped. My foot hit something soft and cold. Unmoving. I fell hard onto the floor, my palms scraping against the floor.“What the…” I trailed off, blinking and annoyed and ready to call for my mom.But then I looked down. And I saw her.“Mom?”There she was, lying there like she’d fallen asleep on the floor. But her eyes were open. You can’t sleep with your eyes opened.“Mom…” Her eyes were vacant. Lifeless. Not at all like the woman who had tucked me into bed despite my protests about how I didn’t need her to tuck me in anymore.“You’re still my baby boy, Rick,” she’d said as she tickled me.But that was

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-TWO: I WON’T

IRIS My hands clawed at Maverick’s shirt as I yanked him harder against me, deepening the kiss, moaning when his tongue delved deep into my mouth. There was no talking. I didn’t even want to talk. I didn’t want to explain how every broken piece of me felt like it was shattering. I didn’t want to think about our impending doom, or the fact that Maverick may have been lying when he said “tomorrow.”I just wanted to feel something.Feel him.Maverick’s hands were everywhere. On my waist. In my hair. Gripping my thighs as he backed me toward the bed, lifting me like I weighed nothing. We fell into the sheets, our mouth fused, our bodies tangling in light sweat and desire.Pretty soon, his shirt was tossed aside. I tugged at his belt with shaking fingers and he groaned against my neck. “Not yet.”I didn’t have any time to get my question in before he started to kiss his way down my body, not missing a single inch as he unclasped my bra from the front.Maverick took his precious time with

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE:

IRIS The house was quiet. Way too quiet.Amethyst was with Megan for the night. When Megan brought me home, she’d insisted on taking her and Chelsea with her, and I’d let her.Because I needed the space. The time to process everything that had happened today. And also because I knew that if I saw my daughter tonight—her big grey eyes, her pout, the way she clung to her stuffed toy—I’d break down completely. And I hated to admit it, but I was already hanging on by a fucking thread.I stood in front of the mirror in my bedroom, staring at myself. I was still wearing my wedding dress, and I looked like a complete mess.Hair disheveled, makeup smudged… The gown felt heavier now, and I didn’t mean physically. I meant that it was heavy because of everything that it had come to symbolize in the past twenty-four hours.I reached behind me, struggling to unzip the dress. The white fabric was clinging to me like it didn’t want to let go, and I let out a sigh of frustration when it finally did

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY: FUCK INDEED

MAVERICK I shouldn’t have said it.The moment those words left my mouth, I knew I’d cut her. And it wasn’t a clean cut. It was one of those deep ones that never stopped bleeding. The kind that was hard to recover from. The kind that would leave scars.I should know. I had a physical representation of those kinds of scars stretched along my back.Regret never hits right away. Not when you’re pissed as fuck. Not when you feel betrayed. It waits, simmers. And then it fucking suffocates you.I sat on the basement steps in my father’s mansion, my shirt still unbuttoned at the collar, my sleeves rolled up when all I wanted to do was tear if off of my skin.I curled my left fist. My wedding ring felt like a shackle on my finger, and all I could think about when I looked at it was Iris slipping it on. She might’ve been upset because of her mother’s appearance, but I knew that she felt what I felt today.Fake marriage or not, what we had with each other was real.I scrubbed my hand over my fa

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE: UNEXPECTED SAVIOR

IRIS ‘I want a paternity test done.’I. Want. A. Paternity. Test. Done. Those words did not stop ringing in my ears, even after Maverick walked away from me, leaving me alone in the balcony. He wanted me to get a paternity test, to prove that Amethyst was his.If he was only asking about it for the sake of Sebastian and his foolishness, that would’ve been a completely understandable situation. But… he wasn’t. He was asking for himself. Because he didn’t believe that Amy was his.He didn’t trust me.I didn’t know how long I’d been standing in the balcony, but I could tell I’d been here a long time. Here I was, in a white dress—my wedding dress—on a night that was supposed to be memorable.Well, this was definitely memorable. I wasn't going to forget this for a long time.“Hey,” I heard Megan’s hesitant voice behind me.Furiously wiping the tears on my face with the back of my hand, I turned to face her. Her eyes widened when she saw the expression on my face, but she didn’t ask what w

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-EIGHT: WHOSE DAUGHTER?

IRIS I didn’t know what I was expecting. Had no idea what kind of twisted bullshit Sebastian was planning to spew. But I sure as hell wasn’t expecting this. His… daughter? My heart stopped. Actually stopped. Frozen in my chest just like the rest of my body.He said it like it was nothing. Like he hadn’t just dropped a grenade in the middle of my wedding reception.I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak. Couldn’t even fucking blink. That’s how stunned I was.“What the fuck are you talking about?”Maverick’s voice sliced through the silence like a blade. It was cold and flat. Void of any and every emotion.Around us, camera flashes kept going off like we were the main show in a circus.Sebastian didn’t flinch. The smug bastard just smirked, staggering slightly because of how drunk he was.“Iris and I had been trying for a baby for two years before the divorce,” he said, loud and clear like he wanted the whole room to hear. “And then all of a sudden, she shows up as my brother’s soon-to-be wif

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SEVEN: THE GARTER BELT

IRIS “More shots!” Megan yelled, a bottle of tequila clutched in her hand as she poured it directly into my mouth. I stumbled in my heels, already piss-drunk from the amount of alcohol I’d taken, but Maverick’s hand came around my waist, gripping me tightly. “Easy there, Angel,” he muttered into my ear, his voice sending shivers down my spine. “You don’t wanna fall, do you?” “I won’t fall,” I said with a giggle. “You’ll be there to catch me if I stumble.” “This is making me fucking sick,” I heard Dwayne groan from somewhere nearby. For the past thirty minutes, Megan had been drowning my system with alcohol, because, according to her, it’s “sacrilegious” to leave my own wedding sober. It had been a smooth thirty minutes, and it had been extremely satisfying watching a pregnant Eleanor rolling her eyes at us while she drank her sparkling water. Sebastian, however, was nowhere to be found. Not that I was looking, but I hadn’t seen him ever since we were at the church toge

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX: GET AWAY FROM MY WIFE

IRIS Here he was. The man who had repeatedly tried to ruin my life and somehow still walked around like he’d done nothing wrong. His demeanor was calm, his tuxedo sharp, his salt and pepper hair tied into a knot at the back of his neck just like always. I wondered how he looked when his hair wasn’t tied that way, when it fell on top of his shoulder. I wondered whether he would look more… human that way. Because right now, he looked like the monster he was. I swallowed hard, squaring my shoulders. “If you’re here to congratulate me, don’t bother,” I said firmly. “I already know it’s killing you inside.” Quentin laughed softly. “You think I give a damn about this wedding? Please. You walked yourself into hell, my darling. I didn’t have to do a thing.” He stepped closer, hands in his pockets. “Though I must admit… watching you burn will be entertaining.” I kept my expression still. “You’re wasting your breath, Quentin. I’m not leaving him. It was bold of you to think yo
