MAVERICK

I wasn’t planning on returning to this hospital. At least, not yet. But I was at a meeting when I received a text from Megan, informing me that my father was at the hospital harassing Iris.

All that text did was confirm all my suspicions. Quentin was here to finish the job.

Well, not finish it himself, obviously. He didn’t like to get his hands dirty.

I wonder why he would come here to see Rhoda and risk being seen.

It was as if he wasn’t even trying to hide. Like he wasn’t worried that I would connect the dots and pin him as my mother’s killer.

Or maybe he just forgot about it.

Quentin turned to look at me, and I could’ve sworn that he rolled his eyes.

“Ah, son,” he said, recovering his composure. “Always so dramatic.”

My fists were already clenched by my sides, and I had to consciously remind myself not to break his nose right here in the hospital hallway.

“Iris,” I turned to face her. “You wanna give us a minute?”

She opened her mouth, and for a second, I thought she was

IRIS There was no turning back.Maverick kissed me like he was both furious and starved. Like I was the bridge between him and his sanity, and he needed to be inside me just to breathe again. He backed me up against the wall and I let him, because part of me wanted it just as badly as he did. Not because it was the healthy thing to do. Not because this was how we should’ve been healing. But because this was us.We were raw. Reckless. Fucking ruined. His hands tugged my shirt over my head in one swift pull, his mouth crashing against mine again the moment it was out of the way. He pressed me against the wall, his teeth dragging across my lower lip until I whimpered.“Still mad at me?” I whispered against his mouth as I roamed my hands over his chest, pushing his shirt off his shoulders and tossing it aside with his help. His hand slid around to cup my jaw. “So mad,” he rasped. “Mad enough to fuck you until you forget your own name.”I moaned as he lifted me off the floor, my legs inst

IRIS My breath caught. He knew. But… how?Maverick leaned back in his seat. “I asked you not to do it, Iris. Bore my whole heart and my fucking past to you, and in exchange, I asked you to do one simple thing for me. Just one fucking thing.” His voice was a low growl, and I flinched slightly.I’d really fucked up. Hurt him. Yet again.“Is that what trust means to you? I tell you that I trust you but you can’t do the same and just let me handle shit with my family?”I could barely hold his gaze.Maverick leaned forward now, elbows braced on the desk, fingers linked hard in front of his face, like he was trying to physically hold himself back from exploding.“Maverick, I just—”He exhaled hard, dragging his hand through his hair. “You went behind my back. I left the hospital and you immediately went to do a fucking test. How did you even get my sample, Iris? Did you plan this?”“No,” I said quickly, shaking my head as I moved closer to the desk. “Maverick, I promise. I did not plan thi

IRIS The energy around Maverick was different when he came back into the room.He didn’t seem angry. No. Not even cold. Just… distant. Maybe his father had said something that really hit him where it hurt.I walked up to him. “Everything okay?”Maverick’s eyes met mine for a moment, swirling with something I understood to be hurt, but it was gone before I could even blink. I started to reach for his face but he turned away sharply. My stomach churned and my skin started to itch. Something was definitely wrong. But he passed it off as nothing, forcing a smile as he stepped away from me. “Yeah, fine.”Rhoda had drifted off a few minutes ago, a light snore escaping her lips as the sedatives had finally kicked in. And Chelsea was asleep beside her, while Amy was feeding in her stroller. Megan had stepped away not to long ago to make an important phone call, so I was the only person awake and present in the room.“Maverick, your dad. Has he…”His jaw clenched. “Yeah, he’s gone,” he replie

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-SIX: PUT HER DOWN

IRIS My entire body went cold as I froze in my spot.It wasn’t shock I felt. It wasn’t even fear—or at least I didn’t think so.All I know that I felt right now was fury.Pure, white-hot, gut-wrenching fury that spread from the pit of my stomach all the way to my fingertips. This was no time no freeze. My legs moved even before my brain did, and I stormed forward, keeping my voice sharp and low as I seethed.“Put her down. Now.”Quentin Sinclair held Amethyst in his arms like she was something that he owned. His expression remained smug, like nothing about this was wrong. He squinted slightly. “You know, now that I think of it, your daughter does look like Sebastian. Just a little.” The corner of his mouth pulled up in a smirk.I swallowed thickly. “I said, put her down!” My voice cracked like a whip.I heard a door slide open and Chelsea’s head peeked out of Rhoda’s room as though she was looking for the source of the sound.“Get back inside, baby,” I heard Megan say quickly behind

IRIS‘I shouldn’t be doing this.’That was what I told myself as Megan and I stood in the dimly lit corner of the diagnostics wing. Amethyst was out of her stroller, waddling about with her tiny little feet while we kept our eyes on her. She was completely unaware of what she was about to walk into.Unaware that she had just been dragged into one of the biggest betrayals of her little life. My heart panged with guilt as I looked down at her, but I didn’t stop.I couldn’t stop.Megan shifted beside me, arms crossed as she chewed on her bottom lip. She said a whole lot without actually saying anything. A fucking loud, pregnant silence, that’s what this was. She’d been like that ever since we got on the elevator and headed up to this wing.Even as she’d watched me take a swab from Amy’s mouth, she was silent. Probably racking her brain for a boatload of reasons to try to stop me.I already knew what she was thinking, and I knew that it was only a matter of time before she’d try again to
