MARISSA'S POV.

Lucas looked like he had just seen a ghost, and watching the usual calmness on his face dissolve into guilt broke me. I shook it off, deciding that I would not break just yet.

“What's wrong honey? Did I say something wrong?” I asked in the tiniest tone I could muster, finding a little pleasure in the way sweat ran down his forehead.

“I'm sure I haven't said anything wrong.” I grabbed the black scrunchie lying on the counter right next to the bed and started to tie my hair into a bun, my eyes fixed on him and the way he pulled his tie down like it was suddenly made of thorns.

“Kade is a good friend of yours, your best friend even.” I continued. “You were hanging out with his wife, Lana, so we decided to have a little fun together as well.” I said that so casually, like it wasn't tearing me apart on the inside, and I saw his eyes widen.

“Marissa, what the hell are you talking about?” He finally asked.

“I believe you know exactly what I'm talking about, Lucas.” I looked him dead in the eyes, and his jaw hung open.

“I know what all your meetings and trips have really been about. You come in here everyday smelling like peaches and you… you have the guts to lie to my face every single time.”

Tears stung the corners of my eyes, burning until I had to wipe them away. My fingers dug into the sheets as he scratched the back of his head.

“Baby, I really have no idea what you're talking about. Did Kade say something to you? What were you two doing alone?” The way he switched the topic had my blood boiling but I was ready for him tonight.

“The same thing you were doing with Lana alone in your office.” I shrugged.

“Wha—” he paused, the crease on his forehead suddenly melting away. He was still trying to keep his cool, still trying to lie even after being caught red-handed.

“Lana wasn't at the office, I don't know what you're talking about.” He laughed it off. “Is my wife perhaps missing me and now making up scenarios in her head?” He chuckled.

That laugh would have driven me crazy before, but all it sounded like now was acid on skin.

“Scenarios?” I scoffed. “You're still gonna lie?”

“What do you mean?”

I groaned heavily, exhausted and desperate to get this conversation over with.

“I know you're cheating on me, Lucas!” I blurted out, the tears returning to my eyes. “I know you're cheating with Lana!”

“What!?” He stepped back, palms tightened beside him like I was the one who had wronged him. And then when I looked past him, his mother was right by the door, meddling as usual.

“Marissa, have you lost your mind? Do you know what you're saying?” He queried, keeping his cool.

“Stop it already!” I rose to my feet, sniffing back my tears and digging my fingers into my palms. “Stop it, okay? I was with Kade today and I saw you, I saw everything.”

He raised his brow at me, but before he could speak, Susan beat him to it.

“So?” She entered, rolling in on her wheelchair. “So what if he's seeing another woman? That doesn't excuse the fact that you're sleeping with the man who brought you home.”

“You're sleeping with Kade?” Lucas asked almost immediately, his voice laced with rage, and my heart fell into my stomach.

“That's… that's not…”

“You're fucking my best friend?” He asked again and my face paled. I stepped back, shaking my head, trying but failing to understand what the hell was going on and how this conversation became about me.

“You have been seeing Lana for years now. And I have been faithful!” I countered, but he closed in on me, his broad shoulders making me feel small as he cornered me by the bed.

I saw his eyes darken, I saw something in his eyes that I had never seen there before. At that moment, I realized that I had never truly known the man that I had been married to for five years.

“Faithful? You spread your legs like a whore for my best friend and you call yourself faithful?”

I sobbed, my chest twisting in pain.

“Lucas, you have been cheating on me. You can't do this, you can't blame me.” My words were almost inaudible.

“I am the man of the house, Marissa. I feed you, I clothe you and I make sure you don't lack a thing. I can do whatever I want. Your job is to remain a good wife, and do whatever I tell you to.”

Every sentence came harsher than the first one, leaving me in shambles until my knees almost gave out. What was wrong with me? Why did I give up my dreams and my career for this man? Why did I let myself be trapped in this marriage with such a monster? How did I even fall so deeply in love with him?

“If you didn't love me, why did you marry me?” I asked, sniffing, and he grinned.

“Because you were an easy target, my dear. Perfect for my public reputation, and naive enough to abandon her own life to care for my mother because I said so.”

So he wanted a trophy wife and a maid in one?

“Fuck you, Lucas!” I screamed, but his large palm circled my jaw instantly, pressing hard until I felt intense pressure in my bones. I squealed and tried to push him, but he didn't budge.

“Know your place.”

I continued to push until I successfully got him to leave me alone. He staggered back, and I clung to the wall like my life depended on it.

“You're a monster!”

“The monster that you're so helplessly in love with and can't do without.” He laughed, turning to face his mother. She smiled at him, and he started wheeling her out of the room.

I couldn't do without him?

I wasn't going to sit quietly and watch him make a fool out of me, use me and keep treating me like a house accessory. Not anymore.

As soon as they left the room, I dove for my phone, immediately texting Kade.

“Please come and get me now.”

After hitting send, I scrolled through my contacts frantically, panting heavily, until I found Grace's number. She was an old college friend, and a lawyer.

“Hey, Marissa.” Her cheerful voice boomed from the other end. “How have you been?”

“Grace, I need your help. I need you to draft my divorce papers.”

My heart sank right after I said that. I had nothing to lean on, nowhere to go, my parents were in Europe and they didn't give two fucks about my wellbeing. But I wasn't going to stay here either.

“What? Marissa, are you sure about this?” Grace sounded concerned, but I nodded, as though she was standing in front of me.

“Yes, please. I want to divorce my husband.”

I sighed, but then, I heard footsteps.

“What!?”

  • Dear Ex Husband, Your Best Friend Worships Me Now.   Sit on my face.

MARISSA'S POV.“Hello, Lana.” I tried to sound as polite as possible, even though my blood pressure was getting higher with every second I stood there looking at her face. I had avoided her on purpose these past few weeks. I was afraid of what I would do when I came face to face with the woman who chose to destroy my home instead of protecting hers. The woman who my ex husband supported her career while brushing my own potentials under the carpet. Lana's eyes ran over my body once again, then she shook her head and sighed, like there was something appalling about the way I looked. “You look horrible, Marissa. This divorce is definitely doing a number on you, all because you couldn't keep your nose out of other people's business.” Was she being serious?“I didn't have a problem with Lucas being married to you,” she continued. “You could have stayed, you could have avoided this miserable life, but you chose self respect over wealth. Who the fuck does that?” She threw her head back,

  • Dear Ex Husband, Your Best Friend Worships Me Now.   Birds of a feather...

MARISSA'S POV.I thought I had heard wrong when Kade asked me to marry him, but he repeated it, the words rolling off his tongue in the most casual way possible. For almost a minute, I held my breath, trying to process what I had just heard. The car suddenly felt suffocating, because it didn't make sense that Kade asked me to marry him just days after my divorce. It had to be a joke. I burst out laughing before I could stop myself, throwing my head back and slapping my thighs while my stomach clenched painfully. I didn't stop until a couple of minutes later when I looked at his face and he was just staring at me like I had a mental illness. Was he actually serious?“Kade, you can't mean that. There's no way in hell that I'm gonna believe that you meant that.” I shook my head, pushing back the strands of hair that fell on my face with my fingers. “You should be able to tell by now when I am joking, Marissa.” He said, deadpan, and I swallowed. “You have to be!” My eyebrows furrow

  • Dear Ex Husband, Your Best Friend Worships Me Now.   Marry me, Marissa.

MARISSA'S POV.“Yes? You called.” Kade was already on his way out of the kitchen when I ran into him at the door, my phone still in my hand. I offered my brightest smile, then grabbed his hand and led him back into the kitchen. “I wanted a picture of this moment.” I answered and motioned to the pan on the stove. He shook his head, letting out a chuckle and then continued with the cooking. Turning the camera, I leaned towards him, close enough that anyone who saw the photo would think that something was going on between us. I tapped his shoulder, and as soon as he looked up and saw the camera, a charming smile spread across his face and I tapped on the screen, taking the photo immediately. “Look at that.” I sighed, staring at the photo— staring at him, for longer than I should have. Maybe it was the way he looked with that butter knife in his hand and that green apron on top his white shirt. “I guess you were right about men looking hotter when they're cooking.” That made him lau

MARISSA'S POV.Subconsciously clutching the towel around my waist, I took a step back. The excitement on his face made my stomach twist in disgust, and I reached for the drawer, leaning on it and slowly reaching for the lamp on it. “Lucas, this is breaking and entering, do you know that? What do you want?” I questioned, swallowing the lump in my throat, my head thinking of a thousand ways to escape if he decided to do something stupid. “Breaking and entering.” He scoffed, his hands still in his pockets as he strode towards the bed. His eyes roamed the room, from the bed covers, to the pink vase with a single daisy on the counter. “It's funny, you would have never said that to me a few weeks ago.” He shook his head, like I was the one who ruined our marriage. “You mean a few weeks ago before I found out you were cheating and only using me as a personal nurse for your mom?” He laughed at what I had said, and then made his way over to me. I hated that his eyes were glued to my body,

  • Dear Ex Husband, Your Best Friend Worships Me Now.   Watched.

MARISSA'S POV.I stared at the car with my hand on my chest, gulping as I tried to understand what was going on. Why would Lucas be stalking me? We were divorced now, he had absolutely no right to be lurking around my home. The first thing I wanted to do was march downstairs and confront him, but before I could make a move, he drove off. He must have noticed me staring at him from the window. Sighing, I squeezed my palms together and slowly backed away from the window. I couldn't stop thinking about it, why would he be sitting outside my house like that? Had he been there all night? Because it was just seven in the morning, way too early. “Lucas is insane, honestly.” I shook my head, making my way into the bathroom. He might be an asshole, but I forced myself to believe that he wasn't going to hurt me. He had cheated, but he wouldn't physically hurt me right?I freshened up and decided to forget about it. Perhaps he just wanted to make sure that I was living in poverty like he had

  • Dear Ex Husband, Your Best Friend Worships Me Now.   Crave me.

MARISSA'S POV.Kade kissed me first, his palm grazing my cheek firmly at first, and then firmer, like he wanted to get lost in the kiss. My hand moved to the back of his head, fingers getting entangled in the strands of hair as I completely melted against his body. Slowly, he moved, one step at a time, with his tongue still lost inside my mouth. I followed his lead, my eyes completely closed until he freed me from his grasp and I ended up on the couch, my hair falling over my face.Panting and sucking in my swollen lip, I flung back the strands of hair, and watched him make the couch dip when he hovered above me. He brought his lips close again, stealing a kiss that made me swallow in pure lust and need. Taking his knees off the couch, he grabbed the bottom of my knitted top and said, “hands up.” I obeyed quickly, panting as my clit clenched tightly inside my underwear. He pulled the top over my head and tossed it to god knows where, then he stared at me like he had never seen bo
