Chapter 3

Ellie’s P.O.V.

The moment I looked up, my heart paused. That man was not old.

He wasn’t weak, fragile, or anything like the rumors surrounding Zackary Walton.

The young man standing near the door looked handsome in a way that felt illegal. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and dressed in a black shirt with the top buttons undone.

And those eyes…

Amber!

Not soft golden brown, but deep amber that glowed under the dim lights like something wild hiding beneath a human’s skin.

For several seconds, my brain completely failed to function.

This couldn’t be him…

The entire city talked about Zackary Walton. He was a sick old man hidden from society after that scandalous downfall.

But that man in his early thirties looked powerful enough to destroy people with a single glance.

His observant gaze moved over me, scanning me unapologetically.

I clutched the fabric of my gown and stood up, my voice steady.

“A-Are you Zackary Walton?”

He raised his eyes to face me, his gaze lingering on my breasts for two lazy seconds.

Then, instead of answering, he started walking toward me, each step carrying an oppressive kind of dominance that made my pulse race harder.

“What do you think?” He asked, his voice deep.

My throat suddenly felt dry.

I instinctively stepped back to maintain the distance between us, but he didn’t stop, moving forward slowly.

A low gasp escaped me as my back hit the cold wall behind me, my eyes fixed on that handsome stranger.

He finally stopped, dangerously too close to me. One of his hands lifted, resting above my head against the wall as he trapped me completely between his muscular arms and chest.

My breath hitched as the scent of mint and an expensive cologne surrounded me instantly.

I barely managed to ask.

“W-Who are you?”

His amber eyes held mine for unbearable seconds before he leaned closer, his warm breath fanning my face.

“I am Zack.”

My heartbeat spiraled out of control.

I shifted uncontrollably as his body’s heat clung to me like a second skin, making me recognize how close he was.

I frowned, masking my inner turmoil.

“Zack? Who?”

His lips curved in an overwhelmingly cold smirk.

“I am the young master of this White Mansion. Zackary Walton is my father.”

What?

My mind went blank.

Father?

I gawked at him in disbelief.

Like, this sinfully alluring man was my stepson?

I got married and, all of a sudden, became a stepmother at the age of only twenty-one?

“That’s not what I was told!” I blurted out. But before I could process the insanity of this situation, Zack stepped away, his warmth disappearing as well.

His expression turned cold and detached as he said mockingly.

“Nice try, Ellie Hunt.”

“Wait, what?” I straightened immediately.

Zack loosened the cuffs of his sleeves and rolled them up before sitting calmly on the chair across the room, his aura commanding.

“Well, I almost admire the effort.“

His gaze dropped briefly to the dress.

"My the father. Seduce the son."

He leaned back.

"Creative strategy."

My mouth fell open.

“S-Seduce?”

His amber eyes swept over my red gown that barely reached my knees.

“You married my father and came into my room dressed like this,” he said, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

“Too bad! You picked the wrong man to test.”

I couldn’t even believe this was happening.

First, Jared.

Then Dad.

And now, this damn stepson was hell bent on humiliating me?

A wild wave of anger replaced my embarrassment in a split second.

I snapped angrily.

“A maid brought me here. I didn’t know it was your room.”

Zack looked unimpressed. “Convenient explanation!”

I pointed my finger at him.

“Watch your tongue. I don’t want to stay here. Not for a second.”

With that, I stomped toward the door, anger rising like a tidal wave.

Zack called me from behind.

“Where are you going now?”

“To my husband’s room.”

“And… where is that?”

His valid query made me pause. Balling my fists, I retorted back.

“I will find it myself. You… just stay away from me.”

I didn’t wait for another insulting comment and stormed out of the room.

My heart was still beating uncontrollably as I walked through the enormous corridors of White Mansion.

This place felt endless, silent and cold. Servants moved around occasionally, but strangely, every single one disappeared before I could stop them for a question.

I groaned in frustration.

“What have I done to deserve this?”

Even after ten minutes of wandering in this castle-like mansion, I still couldn’t find any help.

The cold air brushed my bare skin as I took another turn, hoping to see any living being in the empty corridors.

But…

“Ellie!”

That calm, unhurried voice almost made me scream.

Zack stood in the shadows, leaning against a wall with his hands tucked in his jeans pockets. His tall figure blended into the darkness like he had been waiting there for the whole time.

“You…!”

My hand flew to my chest, clutching it in a failed attempt to calm my thundering heart.

And Zack….

He looked entirely too calm for someone who had nearly given me a heart attack.

“It doesn’t seem like you found your room.”

I shot back. "Don't tell me you ordered everyone to avoid me."

Zack's lips twitched.

"I don't know what you are talking about."

I ignored the irritating amusement in his voice and questioned, swallowing my pride.

“Where is your father’s room?”

For the first time since meeting him, his expression became unreadable.

Zack narrowed his eyes and answered flatly.

“He is in the hospital.”

What?

My anger vanished into thin air.

If Zackary Walton was in the hospital, then why did they bring me here tonight?

What was I supposed to do?

A strange discomfort settled in my chest. I looked around the massive mansion uneasily.

“Then… where is my room… to stay?”

“Well, you have two options..

Zack’s glowing amber eyes studied me for a second.

“One: you can use the guestroom.”

His voice remained calm as he uttered with a straight face.

“Or you can spend the night in my room as you planned.”

His audacity to twist that misunderstanding into something scandalous caught me off guard.

I spoke quickly before he could spout more nonsense.

“Guestroom, please.”

A faint smirk appeared on his face, like my reaction was amusing.

Zack pushed himself away from the wall and started walking. As he crossed my side, he leaned closer, his deep voice brushing against my ear.

“Wise choice, Mrs. Walton. Welcome to the White Mansion.”

Ellie’s P.O.V.The Hunt Villa looked exactly the way I remembered, perfect and magnificent. The building glowed beneath thousands of lights, every balcony draped with white roses and crystal decorations. Luxury cars lined the driveway while reporters crowded near the entrance, camera flashes illuminating the evening like bursts of lightning.Everything was beautiful, just like how I had imagined my wedding reception would look.A sharp ache settled in my chest as I simply stood there, my grip tightening on my purse.“Stop it, Ellie.” I reminded myself. “That dream is over.”I wasn't here as Jared's bride anymore. I came here to attend this banquet on behalf of my husband.Mr. Walton had trusted me with this responsibility. I couldn't disappoint him.Straightening my shoulders, I walked toward the entrance. The host immediately stopped me.“Invitation, please.”I smiled politely and handed him the envelope. He opened it and frowned.“I'm sorry, ma'am.”The invitation was returned to m

Zack's P.O.V.The room looked exactly like Lilly had described, laced with enough supplies to open a small tailoring shop.I stood at the doorway and slowly surveyed the battlefield.Lilly hadn't exaggerated.Ellie Hunt had spent the last two days turning her bedroom into a workshop. My gaze landed on the woman herself. She sat behind the table surrounded by fabric, a measuring tape hanging around her neck while a pair of scissors rested in her hand. She frowned. “What are you doing here?”I replied calmly.“Stopping another suicide attempt.”The scissors hit the table with a loud snap.“Gosh!”She rolled her eyes.“How can you ignore the obvious, Zack? I'm working, not killing myself.”My gaze darted between the gown, untouched food tray sitting nearby, and the dark circles beneath her eyes.“Working without food or sleep is simply another method of suicide.”Her mouth fell open.“That’s not true.”I ignored her lies and ordered Lilly.“Clean this room. The dresses are here.”Lilly w

Ellie’s P.O.V.The moment I stepped outside the mansion, a black luxury car rolled to a stop in front of me.The driver immediately got out and opened the rear door.“Good afternoon,ma’am.”I nodded and asked carefully.“Where are we going?”“The mall.”He stepped aside respectfully.“Mr. Walton wants you to purchase a wedding gift for your sister and a dress for the banquet.”Again Mr. Walton! My mind raced as I simply stared at him, figuring out who had arranged this trip. Then it occurred to me.“Zack can’t be so generous as to ask me to buy a dress.”So, this was my husband's arrangement.First he gave me the bank cards, and now this, making me feel a bit strange.Nobody had ever handed me money and said, ‘Spend it.’Taking a deep breath, I climbed into the car, ready for this so-called banquet shopping. The engine had barely started when someone suddenly knocked against the window.I looked up.“Lilly?”That old maid stood outside, slightly breathless. Lowering the window, I aske

Ellie’s P.O.V. A scream lodged in my throat as I lost my balance, and for one terrifying second, I felt myself tipping forward. “ELLIE HUNT!” That panicked voice sounded closer than before. A strong hand locked around my arm. My world spun around its own axis as that powerful force yanked me back to the balcony. I stumbled against his hard chest, breathing heavily as Zack pulled me up safely. The second both my feet touched the floor, his grip tightened. His amber eyes glowed like fire. “Now, I come to know why your family has sent you here.” His voice was dangerously calm, a sharp contrast to his ashen face. “You are a complete nut job, Ellie Hunt.” Despite the horror of my adventure, his words hit my aching spot. My jaw dropped. “Excuse me?” I straightened immediately, adjusting the fabric of my night pajamas. “I am perfectly alright.” “Oh, of course!” His laugh was absolutely free of amusement. “It must be a new trend to call a suicide attempt perfectly normal.

Ellie’s P.O.V. “You will attend it.” I mimicked Zack’s deep voice under my breath as I marched down the corridor. “My foot!” The nerve of that man! My blood was still boiling because of our argument. “You sold the pictures to our rivals.” The more I replayed those accusations, the more annoyed I became. Honestly, Zack deserved an award for being insufferable. As I rounded the corner, my gaze landed on Mr. Walton’s room. A mere thought crossed my mind. ‘If I could convince my husband to skip this banquet, Zack wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. ‘ Perfect! Zack couldn’t go against his father!Feeling hopeful, I stepped toward the door and knocked at it before twisting the knob. The room smelled faintly of medicines as I entered. Mr. Charles stood beside the bed while Mr. Walton rested against several pillows. He looked comparatively better as the oxygen mask wasn’t there now, replaced by a thin tube beneath his nose. His face was exhausted, but far more awake than be

Ellie’s P.O.V.The ride to the White Mansion felt endless, worry clawing at my throat. Lilly was already waiting for me as I reached there, her voice full of urgency.“Master is waiting for you in the study, Ma’am.”Mr. Zackary was in study?Utterly confused, the moment I stepped into the study, a hand from nowhere wrapped around my wrist all of a sudden, catching me off guard.“What the…”The rest of the protest died down in my throat as my back hit the wall, the impact knocking the breath out of my lungs. I instantly stared up and found Zack standing right in front of me. His hand was still locked around my wrist while the other slammed against the wall beside my head.“You,” he spoke sharply. “How dare you!”My pulse skipped. For the first time I met Zack, he wasn’t calm or smirking coldly. His amber eyes glowed dangerously as he repeated.“How dare you, Ellie Hunt?”Actually, that was supposed to be my question!I asked. “What are you talking about?”His jaw tightened. “Don’t…
