Chapter 5 ~ Shattered

ATHENA

Have you ever been through hell?

People have different versions of it. Mine is staring right at me with cold eyes and disgust that he could vomit me.

And that's the most pathetic thing about me. Knowing all this and still holding onto that sliver of hope. That maybe….

“I knew it! sneaky little bitch aren't you?” Ariana taunts.

“She is her mother's daughter indeed!” Gia adds.

Leah stands there. Like a damn wet cat and that is annoying as hell. Seeing her pretend to be a damsel in distress pisses me off.

Because I've seen her eyes when she looks at me.

Trust me, I know a bitch when I see one. And Leah Woods,  sure is on the top of the mean table.

Alex’s voice slices through the tension like a blade.  Like everyone else is just noise he is trying to tune out.

“The guests have started arriving.” His tone is calm and controlled—like he didn’t just throw me to the wolves. “Let’s not make a scene. We can discuss this later.”  He stands and grabs Leah by the hand and walks away.

My mouth opens and closes but no words come out. Someone should slap me.

I need a reality check.

Ariana looks ready to argue, her jaw tightening, but she holds back. Barely. I see the way her fingers twitch at her side like she’s fighting the urge to follow them and tear Leah apart right here and now.

She knows how to bide her time though. She always does.

She’s the most feared lawyer in Velmoria City, after all.

“Fix your son before I fix him!” She hisses to her husband.

“Athena, don't worry sweetheart.  We know how to deal with a vixen like her! We won't let history repeat itself, especially in my family!”

Right.

History.

Another factor is why I'm in this damn mess in the first place.

So, apparently,  Leah's mother,  Julian, was Mr. Wood's mistress who was married to an expecting wife. But after discovering her husband's extracurricular activities,  she had a heart attack and died with the baby.

Peter, was shamelessly able to marry the cause of his wife's death but thank God society is unforgiving and has shunned away the woods.

Everyone rises to greet the arriving guests, slipping into their masks of wealth and power. Smiling. Laughing. Pretending like there wasn’t nearly a war at this very table.

I do the same.

Except, to the public I'm not Alex's wife.

I'm just a fortunate orphan who received a scholarship from the Kings Foundation and happens to be at every event.

Whispers would go on but Alex would squeeze my hand, and whisper, “Focus on me. What they think doesn't matter.”

And it made me fall for him even harder.

How he changed overnight baffles me. Yes, the deal was to divorce after three years but I thought that….

Noah steps closer, his voice low. Pulling me out of my thoughts.

“Are you okay?”

I force a small nod. “Of course.”

“You don't have to lie to me, Athena. You know that.” His voice is soft, almost sympathetic and I hate it.

I turn and force a smile,  “Seriously, I am good.”

But my mind is elsewhere.

Searching.

For the one person I can’t see.

Alexander King...

“Excuse me.” I give him a small smile as I weave through the crowd, the hall is effortlessly captivating and it has more people than I usually see at the events they host.

Shouldn’t Alex have pulled me aside to talk?

I don’t even know what I’m expecting.

An apology?

 An explanation?

Maybe to talk things over?

The wind hits my face and I pause to compose myself. I wrap my hands around myself as I walk toward the pool area and freeze.

Not because of the cold but because of what I see.

My breath catches.

Leah is in his arms.

Her slim fingers clutch his jacket, her body trembling as she buries her face in his chest. Her shoulders shake—crying.

Of course, she's crying. I did call her bullshit out after all.

Alex is holding her.

His back is to me, From my angle it looks like he's shielding her from the rest of the world.

 From me.

My heart shatters as the scene slaps me. In the face when Leah notices me...

She lifts her head, just enough to look at me.

Tears glisten in her eyes, her lips trembling as she sobs into Alex's jacket. But then—

Then, she smiles.

A slow, cunning smile.

A deliberate, taunting, victorious smile.

I feel my heart shatter all over again.

Alex's arms around her. Leah’s tears soaked into his jacket. The way he doesn’t push her away.

I take a step back. Then another.

The walls feel like they’re closing in.

I need air.

I need to get out.

But before I can disappear before I can pull myself together—

Leah’s voice drifts through the air, soft and breathless.

“Alex,” she whispers, just loud enough for me to hear.

“Hmmm?” He responds.

“I love you.”

AthenaYou've never loved hard enough if you've never stayed up all night staring at the wall hoping the plain colours will stop the ache of your heart. “I love you.” Words I haven't had the courage to say in three years rolled out of her tongue like she was saying her name. Did he say it back?Just the thought of him telling Leah he loves her even though I've known that for three years does horrible things to my poor heart. It's been two days and I still can't get the scene out of my head. I stare at the wall, wondering why I'm still here. Because you're hoping he'll love you instead.A voice whispers and I shut it down. The vibrating of my phone pulls me out and I stare at it the screen flashing Ariana. My mother-in-law. “Hi, mum.” I breathe. Hoping my voice isn't giving me away. “Hi, baby.” She cools. “I've been trying to reach your husband and can't get through, is he home?” Right, the happy couple. That's my role. “No. He left early this morning.” I respond, hoping my vo

I'm finally in the Royal Bastards office and it's taking all my strength to keep myself from smacking him.Maybe I should just sign those damn divorce papers.“Did you hear me?” I snap. Alex pauses, reaches over to his desk, and grabs a bottle of water before leaning back like he has all the time in the world. He watches me for a second, his expression unreadable. “What's with the attitude? Are you still sulking over the divorce?”“I’m actually celebrating.” I retort, crossing my arms. “I want to be as far away from you as possible.”Alex smirks, leaning against his desk like he has just heard the most entertaining line. “Funny. You say that, yet here you are. Always finding a reason to be around me. If you're so eager, why don't I have the signed papers on my desk?”“You'll have them tomorrow morning or tonight should you remember you have a-” I catch myself before saying the word home.“If you’ll be at the house

Athena I exhale sharply, ignoring her as I walk past, but her voice—sickly sweet and taunting—halts me mid-step. I grip the phone tighter, forcing myself to walk past her without a word, but she steps in front of me, blocking my path. “Poor, poor Athena,” she drawls, tilting her head. “Still playing the devoted wife? It must be exhausting, trying to hold on to a man who doesn’t even want you.” So the bitch knew and played dumb last time?I knew it!I inhale sharply, refusing to take the bait. “Move.” She chuckles, a slow, mocking sound. “Why? So you can go home and pretend your marriage is real?” She takes a step closer, her eyes gleaming with mockery “We both know Alex belongs to me. He always has. He always will.” I laugh, a real laugh I have to hold myself back. Now that I think about it, she wouldn't be here spewing nonsense if all was going her way so that means Alex still needs me to play wife. Lucky for her, I'm already too tired, “You’re so desperate to be impo

Alex“I love you.” Three words. I’ve heard them countless times before—soft, warm, and filled with sincerity. Mum and Dad say it to each other. Mum and Granny say it to me all the time. But hearing them come out of Leah’s mouth the other night? It made my skin crawl. It sounded foreign, misplaced like it didn’t belong between us. It didn’t settle in my chest the way it was supposed to. Instead, it made something tighten, something itch beneath my skin. I pulled away. Not obviously. Just enough to create distance, enough that I could breathe without feeling suffocated by the weight of words I wasn’t ready to hear. And that’s when I noticed her. AthenaRunning. Her black long hair whipped behind her, her pace quick. The way she left—like she was running from something—made my jaw clench. I had wondered for the past three days but since I had been busy with work I barely saw her. But seeing and hearing those remarks told me one thing. My wife was jealous and I liked it.W

AthenaNoah stood in the living room, his hair a mess. He was wearing a T-shirt and dark jeans, which was rare to see since it seemed like the Kings had a thing for suits. Even Gia in her old age wore suits. I was always the odd one out in my jeans and Plain tops. “Why do you let him do this? You know Aunt Ari wouldn't let this go on if you just told her?” He takes a step closer. I almost laugh at that.Alex would kill me and burry me six feet under if I ever tried to do that. That's a known fact. But… deep down in my heart, I feel like this secret between us is the only thing that keeps me going. A sick part of me likes that we have something we share that no one else knows. “I'm not bothered by it.” I lie. Noah watches me. For a second I feel like he's about to argue but I was just humiliated a few seconds ago and had he walked in a few minutes earlier, he would have watched the scene like a damn movie in 3D. Never did anything out of the ordinary. I liked to call her plain in my head because of how easy she was to read. But now, standing here, I'm starting to wonder who the fuck I married. I'm still trying to find a way to explain that.“I just saw Zayan and the whole clan walk into Athena’s room. ATHENA “I am safe,” I say, forcing a weak smile, trying to play it off. I don't like worrying people. Zayan has become someone special to me over the years. He is one of the few people who actually cares about me, and it hurts me seeing him like this. His mother is not my biggest fan but Rose, his sister inlaw always tells me it's not just me she's like that with everyone. So I guess I no longer felt bad whenever we hang out. But truly, I am grateful to Zayan, without him, I don’t know if I would have found the strength to meet Anna and uncover the truth about my son. “I mean, technically I’m breathing, so that counts, right?” I try to lighten the mood, but fail miserably because his glare only increases. His jaw is clenched, his brows drawn so tightly they almost touch. He stares at me like he can’t decide if he wants to hug me tighter or scream until the walls shake.“You almost died,” he says. “Again.”Speaking of which, I need to investigate who was powerful enough to back Le
