Chapter 3

Author: Peachie 11
It didn't take long for the waiter to return.

He looked visibly flustered, though he quickly forced himself to regain composure after catching Helen's darkened expression. "Ms. Kerr… There's no one on the terrace."

"No one?"

Helen's brow furrowed tight. "He ran off?"

"He must have left," the waiter replied, keeping his head down.

He didn't dare mention the single leather shoe left behind on the terrace, nor did he mention how strange the disturbed snow beneath the railing looked.

It was better to avoid unnecessary trouble. Who would want to ruin the happy occasion for the boss?

"Good riddance."

Helen let out a breath of relief, a flicker of disdain crossing her eyes. "I knew he was just putting on a show. He acted like he was on the brink of death one second, then vanished the next. A man full of lies like him really disgusts me."

Austin exhaled too, patting his chest. "I'm just glad he left. I was genuinely worried he might do something reckless."

"Reckless? Him?"

Helen sneered, slipping her arm through Austin's. "He loves his life more than anyone. He would stop at nothing to gain wealth and the title of my husband. Don't worry. Even if the rest of the world dropped dead, he'd still cling to life."

My heart felt as if it were being crushed by an invisible hand.

Even though it had stopped beating, the suffocating pain still made me want to curl up.

So, in her eyes, I was just a money-hungry coward.

Had she forgotten that she was the one who begged me to marry her?

She had stood outside my apartment all night in a snowstorm, swearing that I was the one she loved most.

Those vows sound like nothing more than a cruel joke now.

The party went on.

A massive three-tiered cake was wheeled out.

Helen held Austin's hand as they sliced into it together.

The heavy scent of sweet frosting filled the air.

I floated beside the cake and stared at the delicate pair of sugar figurines on top. They really did look just like them.

For the past six months, stomach cancer had robbed me of the ability to eat almost anything.

I had been surviving strictly on IV fluids. I couldn't even remember what cake tasted like anymore.

I reached out my hand, wanting to scoop up just a tiny taste of cream.

My fingers passed straight through the frosting, creating nothing more than a weak current of air.

I couldn't even have a single bite of sweetness.

Disappointed, I pulled my hand back and crouched beneath the table, wrapping my arms around my transparent knees.

"It's fine. It's not like… I can feel hungry anymore. It really… doesn't matter." I repeated it to myself over and over.

Yet, tears still managed to fall.

Could ghosts cry too?

If so, they must be the bitterest tears in the world.

Late into the night, the guests finally dispersed.

Helen brought Austin back to the mansion that was once ours but now belonged to them.

The place was once a home I had decorated piece by piece.

The beige curtains I chose, the pothos plants I nursed, and the matching couple's slippers I bought were all gone.

The entryway was replaced with the rug Austin preferred, and the living room was filled with his favorite lilies—flowers I was deathly allergic to, which had never been allowed in our house before.

"Helen, I'm so happy tonight," Austin whispered, wrapping his arms around her waist.

"But… We still haven't heard from Reuben. I'm still a little worried. His phone goes straight to voicemail. What if something actually happened to him?"

Helen's hand paused as she unclasped her necklace.

Then, she scoffed. "What could possibly happen to him? He's probably hiding out in some hotel right now, scheming how to leak things to the press and extort me for cash.

"Just ignore him. Tomorrow, I'll have the lawyers file for divorce. Since he chose to make things difficult, he can't blame me for showing no mercy."

Showing no mercy?

Since when had she shown me any mercy?

The bowl shattered, splashing scalding soup across Austin's feet. He screeched in pain."Have you not put on enough of a show in front of me over these past three years?"I closed in on him step by step, like a relentless devil demanding blood. "Why did Reuben pass out? Why did my dad tell the maid to douse him with water that day? Austin, do you want me to pull the security footage and drag you straight to the police station?"Austin's face was drained of all color. His entire frame trembled violently. "Helen, I-I didn't mean to. I was just—""Starting today, make sure I never see your face again," I said, staring at him coldly, as if looking at a pest."And return every single piece of Reuben's watch that you stole. For every missing piece, I'll cut off one of your fingers."Austin shrieked and scrambled away, crawling on all fours to escape.Getting rid of that man brought me not even a shred of satisfaction.Because no matter how I retaliated, Reuben was never coming back.

Epilogue: Helen's POVThe moment the specks of light vanished, I felt a part of myself die right along with it.The snow kept falling, cutting against my face like knife blades.I knelt in the snow, clutching that dark gray scarf like a lifeline. It still carried Reuben's scent—a subtle blend of faint medicine and his distinctly fresh aroma. This was the only thing he had left me, and it was also his most cruel curse."If there's a next life, let it be your turn to love me, okay?"No. Reuben lied to me.The last thing he said was that he wanted to be a bird so he would never run into me again. He wanted to fly away and completely erase every single tie between us."Don't even dream about it…"Broken sounds squeezed out of my throat as I roared at the empty park like a delusional lunatic, "Reuben, whether you're a human, a ghost, or a bird, you're mine! You can only be mine!"Yet the only response I received was the howling wind.I lowered my head, staring at the scarf with

"No… No…"Helen sobbed, shaking her head. "I don't want a next life… I want you to be here now! Reuben, who gave you the right to make decisions on your own? How could you just leave me all alone?"Come back! Didn't you love me the most? How could you bear to let me suffer like this?"I looked at her total unraveling and let out a soft sigh.It wasn't that I could bear it. She was the one who pushed me away with her own hands. It was her endless coldness and relentless cruelty that killed the Reuben who loved her.I was just a phantom now. I couldn't offer her an embrace anymore, nor could I give her warmth. On the seventh day after my death, a heavier snowfall blanketed the city.Helen sat on the bench in the park where we first met, clutching the urn with my ashes.Snow dusted her once-lustrous hair, making her look as though she had aged overnight. She sat there completely motionless, like a stone statue.Passersby pointed and whispered, calling her a madwoman, but she d

I whispered, "Six months ago, I wanted to tell you. I brought the report home that day and cooked a whole table of your favorite dishes. "But you brought Austin home instead. You dumped my food into the trash and said just looking at me ruined your appetite."Three months ago, the pain was so bad I was rolling around on the bed. I called begging you to take me to the hospital. "You said I was faking it to play the victim and told me to drop dead."Last month, I passed out at home. Your father had the maid douse me with water to wake me up, claiming I was just slacking off."It was as if something suddenly clicked in Helen's head. She frantically scrambled through her phone like a madwoman. She scrolled through our chat history from three months ago and found a three-second voice message. The moment she pressed play, my voice came through, weak to the point of fading out. "Helen… It hurts so much… Help me…"It was followed immediately by her ice-cold reply, "Serve you right.

Austin scowled, looking completely bewildered. "No… That's impossible, right? How could that bastard be dead? He must have staged a dummy just to fool you! Helen, don't buy into it!"As if clutching at a straw, Helen stood up abruptly, grabbed her coat, and darted out the door. "Right, it's definitely fake! "He's the ultimate actor! I can't believe he has the nerve to pretend he's dead this time! I'm going to expose him! I'll make him regret ever being born into this world!"Cruel words spewed from her mouth, but her hands were trembling so violently she couldn't even tie her shoes. She even tripped over the threshold on her way out, nearly taking a heavy fall.I floated right behind her, taking in her disheveled state. What was she so afraid of?She hated me more than anything and wished I were dead. Now that I had given her exactly what she wanted, shouldn't she be happy?
