Chapter 4

Author: Peachie 11
For three long years, I drank myself to a stomach hemorrhage just to help Helen win that multinational contract.

When her father fell ill, I stayed by his hospital bed for half a month, never leaving his side.

To give her peace of mind at work, I put up with her father's impossible demands and turned a blind eye to all the rumors.

Even after I was diagnosed with cancer, I kept it from everyone and endured chemotherapy completely alone just so I wouldn't distract her.

When my hair fell out in clumps, I bought a wig to hide it.

When I was reduced to skin and bones, I wore oversized clothes to cover it up.

Yet in Helen's eyes, every bit of it was just proof of how calculating and manipulative I was.

Helen picked up her phone, looking like she wanted to make a call, but her finger hovered over the screen for a long time before she tossed it aside in frustration.

"Forget him. I'm going to take a shower." She turned and headed into the bathroom.

The sound of running water filled the room.

Austin sat alone on the couch. The sweet, submissive act vanished from his face in an instant.

He pulled out his phone and typed out a quick message, "It's done. The idiot was probably fuming tonight. As long as he loses his cool and makes one more scene, Helen will be completely done with him. Then, I'll replace him as her husband."

He smiled triumphantly after hitting send.

Reaching over, he casually picked up a pill bottle from the coffee table.

It was the high-potency painkillers I had forgotten to take with me before I left.

"What's this?"

Austin opened the cap out of curiosity, poured out a white pill, and sniffed it. "Vitamins? Ha, how weak is this guy to be popping this many vitamins?"

He tossed the bottle into the trash with disgust.

A sharp rattle echoed.

My lifesaving medication was left sitting among banana peel and discarded paper.

I floated beside the trash can, staring down at the bottle.

I wanted to pick it up.

The doctor had gone through a lot of trouble to get them for me. One pill could keep the pain away for four hours.

Even though I couldn't feel pain anymore, I still couldn't bear to see it thrown away.

That was my life.

I reached out to grab it. I tried once, twice, then a third time, but my hand passed right through every time.

I collapsed onto the floor, staring blankly at the bottle.

Helen stepped out of the bathroom after her shower and saw Austin packing up some things. "What are you doing?"

"I noticed a few things here… Look like they belong to Reuben. I thought I'd pack them away so you wouldn't have to look at them and get upset."

Austin was holding a photo album in his hands. It was our wedding album.

In the photos, I wore a sharp suit, my face radiant with happiness. Even though Helen had a faint expression, the affection in her eyes was impossible to hide.

When Helen saw the album, her gaze went blank for a brief moment.

Then, she strode over and snatched it out of his hands.

I thought she was going to keep it.

Instead, she walked straight to the fireplace and threw her arm forward.

The album fell into the fire. The flames instantly consumed the smiling version of me in the picture.

"Good riddance," Helen said, her voice as cold as ice. "I was blind back then to think he was simple and kind. Keeping these things around only reminds me of how stupid I was."

The firelight flickered across her face, casting alternating shadows.

I watched myself turn into ash, piece by piece, in the flames.

The very last shred of longing inside me burned away along with that fire.

It wasn't just the photos Helen burned. It was the ten years I spent loving her.

Let them burn.

She could burn every last bit of those years.

That way, I could leave completely clean, with nothing left holding me back.

The next morning, I was woken up by a sharp, persistent phone ring.

Ghosts didn't need sleep, but I still habitually rested with my eyes closed.

Helen was woken up by the call and answered with a face full of anger, "Who is this? Don't you know it's barely morning?"

I couldn't hear what the person on the other end was saying, but Helen's expression changed instantly—from anger to shock and finally to a pale white.

The phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor with a loud thud.

"Helen, what's wrong?"

Austin was startled awake. He sat up, rubbing his eyes in confusion.

Helen ignored him completely.

As if she had lost her soul, she turned around stiffly and stared out the floor-to-ceiling window at the vast, white world outside.

It took a long time before she let out a voice that was parched to the extreme.

"The police said… They found a man's body… in the hotel's backyard. The build and the clothes… all look like Reuben's."

The bowl shattered, splashing scalding soup across Austin's feet. He screeched in pain."Have you not put on enough of a show in front of me over these past three years?"I closed in on him step by step, like a relentless devil demanding blood. "Why did Reuben pass out? Why did my dad tell the maid to douse him with water that day? Austin, do you want me to pull the security footage and drag you straight to the police station?"Austin's face was drained of all color. His entire frame trembled violently. "Helen, I-I didn't mean to. I was just—""Starting today, make sure I never see your face again," I said, staring at him coldly, as if looking at a pest."And return every single piece of Reuben's watch that you stole. For every missing piece, I'll cut off one of your fingers."Austin shrieked and scrambled away, crawling on all fours to escape.Getting rid of that man brought me not even a shred of satisfaction.Because no matter how I retaliated, Reuben was never coming back.

Epilogue: Helen's POVThe moment the specks of light vanished, I felt a part of myself die right along with it.The snow kept falling, cutting against my face like knife blades.I knelt in the snow, clutching that dark gray scarf like a lifeline. It still carried Reuben's scent—a subtle blend of faint medicine and his distinctly fresh aroma. This was the only thing he had left me, and it was also his most cruel curse."If there's a next life, let it be your turn to love me, okay?"No. Reuben lied to me.The last thing he said was that he wanted to be a bird so he would never run into me again. He wanted to fly away and completely erase every single tie between us."Don't even dream about it…"Broken sounds squeezed out of my throat as I roared at the empty park like a delusional lunatic, "Reuben, whether you're a human, a ghost, or a bird, you're mine! You can only be mine!"Yet the only response I received was the howling wind.I lowered my head, staring at the scarf with

"No… No…"Helen sobbed, shaking her head. "I don't want a next life… I want you to be here now! Reuben, who gave you the right to make decisions on your own? How could you just leave me all alone?"Come back! Didn't you love me the most? How could you bear to let me suffer like this?"I looked at her total unraveling and let out a soft sigh.It wasn't that I could bear it. She was the one who pushed me away with her own hands. It was her endless coldness and relentless cruelty that killed the Reuben who loved her.I was just a phantom now. I couldn't offer her an embrace anymore, nor could I give her warmth. On the seventh day after my death, a heavier snowfall blanketed the city.Helen sat on the bench in the park where we first met, clutching the urn with my ashes.Snow dusted her once-lustrous hair, making her look as though she had aged overnight. She sat there completely motionless, like a stone statue.Passersby pointed and whispered, calling her a madwoman, but she d

I whispered, "Six months ago, I wanted to tell you. I brought the report home that day and cooked a whole table of your favorite dishes. "But you brought Austin home instead. You dumped my food into the trash and said just looking at me ruined your appetite."Three months ago, the pain was so bad I was rolling around on the bed. I called begging you to take me to the hospital. "You said I was faking it to play the victim and told me to drop dead."Last month, I passed out at home. Your father had the maid douse me with water to wake me up, claiming I was just slacking off."It was as if something suddenly clicked in Helen's head. She frantically scrambled through her phone like a madwoman. She scrolled through our chat history from three months ago and found a three-second voice message. The moment she pressed play, my voice came through, weak to the point of fading out. "Helen… It hurts so much… Help me…"It was followed immediately by her ice-cold reply, "Serve you right.

Austin scowled, looking completely bewildered. "No… That's impossible, right? How could that bastard be dead? He must have staged a dummy just to fool you! Helen, don't buy into it!"As if clutching at a straw, Helen stood up abruptly, grabbed her coat, and darted out the door. "Right, it's definitely fake! "He's the ultimate actor! I can't believe he has the nerve to pretend he's dead this time! I'm going to expose him! I'll make him regret ever being born into this world!"Cruel words spewed from her mouth, but her hands were trembling so violently she couldn't even tie her shoes. She even tripped over the threshold on her way out, nearly taking a heavy fall.I floated right behind her, taking in her disheveled state. What was she so afraid of?She hated me more than anything and wished I were dead. Now that I had given her exactly what she wanted, shouldn't she be happy?
