Chapter 2

Autor: Black Tea
It wasn't long before an even louder wave of questioning broke out in the hall.

"What do you mean he operated for 72 hours straight? Who is he trying to fool here?"

"I know, right? It's ridiculous how a murderer is still trying to act like a saint at this point!"

Wanda looked grim, ordering the technicians to immediately check for any traces of tampering in the memory source.

Harvey walked to her side and subtly guided the situation. "Dr. Sullivan is very calculating. He probably expected the use of the 'Project Nightingale' system and had deliberately tampered with the memory source. It's a good thing we went straight for the judgment, Wanda."

Wanda let out a scornful laugh, her eyes brimming with contempt. "You're absolutely right. Matthew could collapse or even die on that operating table for all I care. He still wouldn't be able to wash the blood of those five people off his hands."

She turned toward Harvey, her voice instantly softening while saying, "Thank you for always being there for me, Harvey."

Harvey wrapped an arm around her, smiling smugly. "You don't have to thank me, Wanda."

I felt a wave of bitterness surging within me as I watched them interact so intimately. Wanda's eyes, which used to look at me with such gentleness, now held nothing but blatant loathing. I could still feel a slow, grinding pain in my chest, as if my heart were being slowly torn apart.

Harvey was the real villain behind the tragedy, but Wanda refused to listen to my explanation. She silenced me for good by surgically removing my vocal cords, and the day before the trial, she stared at me with bloodshot eyes and asked, "How could you kill my mother, Matthew?"

I kept shaking my head, trying to tell her that it wasn't me. She still refused to believe me, though. She drove ten sharp needles into my fingers, the pain so excruciating that it made me bite my lip until it bled. "It was these very hands that killed my mother."

She then looked down at my bloodied, mangled hands and cried.

In the meantime, my memories were still playing on the large screen, transitioning to a path lined with magnolia trees at my medical school. Wanda, who was much younger back then, was standing by a tree in her police uniform, waiting for me.

I hurried to her, gasping for air with a stack of medical books in my arms.

Wanda then pulled a lollipop from her pocket like a magician, unwrapped it, and held it to my lips, exclaiming, "Congratulations, Matthew! Your first time acting as the lead surgeon for an animal experiment today was a huge success!"

I bit into the lollipop and let the sweet flavor fill my mouth, though I still felt a bit shaken about the surgery. "I was trembling the whole time during sutures. I nearly nicked the aorta, Wanda."

"You have nothing to be afraid of. You'll definitely become the most renowned doctor in the country in the future, Matthew," Wanda said as she took my hand and laced her fingers with mine, looking at me earnestly. She looked at me with eyes sparkling so brightly that it seemed like stars were reflecting in them.

It was the kind of adoration any man would crave from the woman he loved. I felt a wave of warmth washing over me after hearing that. I remained silent, simply holding her hand a little tighter.

That memory came to a stop at that very moment.

Wanda's body momentarily froze, and for a split second, her expression betrayed a swirl of conflicting emotions.

Harvey instantly noticed Wanda's hesitation. He interjected somberly, saying, "Dr. Sullivan had such high aspirations back then. He unfortunately couldn't resist the allure of status and money, though. It just goes to show that everyone eventually changes."

Wanda suddenly snapped out of it, her expression turning cold again. "You're right. Matthew truly might have been a decent doctor in the past, Harvey."

Harvey was taken into custody immediately to face the full weight of the law. He had wiped the sensitive data from my computer, but he had underestimated Wanda. Wanda was more than capable of recovering what he had deleted since she had a minor in computer science and had built a track record of technical achievements in the years since. She worked around the clock for two weeks to reconstruct the confidential files on my computer. She didn't stop until every shred of evidence was turned over to the authorities. In the end, the police breached Vitalis Origin's central database, uncovering years of evidence regarding bribed officials and manipulated clinical records. They found thousands of altered diagnoses, swapped drug lists, and identified the names of patients who suffered or died because of these actions. That evidence was irrefutable, and one by one, the corrupt executives were toppled from their positions. Vitalis Origin was dismantled entirely, its global criminal infrastr

Wanda's focus narrowed entirely on Harvey as he cowered on the floor. She wiped the blood from her lips as she slowly crouched before him. She didn't scream or demand answers; her voice was eerily steady. She reached out to stroke his terror-stricken face with a tenderness that was deeply unsettling as she whispered, "You're the one who really changed, Harvey."Harvey finally snapped. He let out a piercing scream, sobbing hysterically. "I did it all for you, Wanda! It was all Matthew's fault! He stole everything that was supposed to be mine—your love and the position as the chief of the department! I just wanted to get back what was mine! What did I do wrong, Wanda?"Wanda stood up and gazed down at him, her eyes devoid of life. "You're right. You're not the one in the wrong—I am. I'm the one who brought a monster into my life. I'm the one who can't see the difference between good and bad. I'm the one who personally killed my husband."She then raised her hand and delivered a stin

In that instant, the truth was laid bare, and a wave of fury tore through the crowd, stripping away their logic and composure. There was a momentary silence before everyone in the hall erupted into a deafening roar of outrage."Get him! Harvey is a cold-blooded monster that doesn't deserve to live!""He's the real murderer! He's the one who killed those five patients and pinned it on Dr. Sullivan!""He should rot in hell! He deserves the slowest, most painful death imaginable!"That collective rage turned into physical violence, as one of the bereaved relatives standing nearby surged past the security guards, snatched a heavy nameplate off the desk, and lunged at Harvey with it.Harvey clutched his head, shrieking. "It's all a lie! It's all Matthew's doing! He set me up before he kicked the bucket! He's trying to take me down with him!"Wanda paid no mind to the near-riot breaking out behind her. She braced herself against the podium and rose slowly with great difficulty. She the

It showed an oncology diagnostic report for Matthew Sullivan. In the diagnosis section, a few words were clearly written—Glioblastoma Multiforme, Stage 4, commonly referred to as end-stage brain cancer. In the bottom right of the report, the doctor's messy signature was accompanied by an assessment. "He has a life expectancy estimated at no more than three months." In that instant, everyone in the hall fell into a deathly silence. That diagnostic report left everyone frozen, their minds reeling. They found it hard to believe that the world-class surgeon who had once pulled a 72-hour shift and performed legendary medical miracles had been living under a death sentence the whole time.Wanda stumbled, gripping the podium to stay upright. She couldn't look away from the screen as a crushing pain seized her chest, making it impossible to breathe. She remembered pointing directly at me, accusing me of being obsessed with power. She recalled herself saying, "You truly disgust me, Matthew

It was then that streams of code raced across the screen, and the scene shifted back to the night before the operation. I was alone in the office late at night. I logged into an encrypted computer and opened a classified file labeled "Nightingale." It contained detailed accounts of dozens of medical mishaps, all of which were linked to the same batch of defective medical instruments.I took out my phone and placed an encrypted call, my voice low and trembling while saying, "I've uncovered everything. It traces back to an offshore firm called Vitalis Origin. They have a mole inside the hospital acting as one of their local operatives."They're going to sabotage tomorrow's multi-organ transplant. They plan to cause a high-profile medical catastrophe to destroy public confidence in our domestic transplant program, clearing a path for their own low-grade artificial hearts to corner the market."It was then that a composed male voice sounded from the other end of the line. "You've done

I tried to speak, trying hard to defend myself, but it was useless since no one could hear me.It was then that the scene suddenly shifted to when I had been assigned a difficult case—an eight-year-old boy named Levi Hall with a rare heart condition. There wasn't a single doctor in the entire country who was willing to perform the operation. They were terrified that a failed surgery would ruin their reputation, but that didn't stop me.I held Levi in my arms and said, "You have nothing to be afraid of, as I'm going to make your heart all better, Levi."Levi asked hesitantly, "Can I run around like the other children after the surgery?"I nodded with a smile, replying, "You'll definitely be able to do that."It was a surgery that lasted for 16 hours. I was drenched in sweat all over my back as I opened the chest, performed the surgery, and finished the sutures—each step was executed perfectly. I finally breathed a sigh of relief and let out a satisfied smile once the suturing w
