Jack read the orders twice.

Then a third time.

He was sitting at the kitchen table, his phone in one hand and the official paperwork open on his laptop. Lela sat across from him, watching his expression change with every paragraph.

“Jack,” she whispered. “What does it say?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“The assignment is for twelve months.”

Lela stopped breathing for a moment.

“Twelve?”

“That's what the orders say.”

She looked down at the table.

A year.

Another year.

  • Decisions I made    The Dates on the Paper

Jack read the orders twice. Then a third time.He was sitting at the kitchen table, his phone in one hand and the official paperwork open on his laptop. Lela sat across from him, watching his expression change with every paragraph.“Jack,” she whispered. “What does it say?”He rubbed his forehead.“The assignment is for twelve months.”Lela stopped breathing for a moment.“Twelve?”“That's what the orders say.”She looked down at the table.A year.Another year.Four seasons of birthdays, holidays, milestones, and ordinary mornings without him.“What about the reporting date?”Jack scrolled farther down.“Forty-five days.”“Forty-five days?”He nodded.Lela pushed her chair back and stood.“That's barely six weeks.”“I know.”“No.” She shook her head. “That's not enough time.”“We'll get everything organized.”She turned toward the window.“I just got you back.”Jack closed the laptop.“Come here.”She didn't move.“Lela.”“I can't do this again.”He stood and approached her slowly.“

  • Decisions I made    The Call That Changed Everything

Six months had passed since Sophia and Isabella came home. The house had changed in a hundred little ways. The twins were bigger now, their tiny newborn clothes replaced with outfits that actually fit. Sophia had developed a habit of smiling whenever Jack leaned over her crib, while Isabella seemed determined to study everything around her. They were both growing, learning, and becoming two very different little personalities.Lily had embraced her role as big sister with complete enthusiasm. She read to them, sang to them, brought them stuffed animals, and occasionally informed her parents that they were not doing something correctly. She was still convinced she could teach them how to make pancakes.Jack had promised to help when they were old enough.Lela was doing well, too. Her recovery continued, although she still had days when her leg reminded her that healing wasn't something she could rush. She had made progress with her strength and mobility, and she was slowly finding her

  • Decisions I made    The Things We Learn at Home

The first thing Jack heard that morning was Lily announcing that she had an emergency. He was halfway through preparing a bottle when she appeared in the kitchen doorway, still wearing her pajamas, her hair tangled from sleep.“Daddy!”Jack turned immediately.“What happened?”“Bunny is missing.”He glanced at the stuffed rabbit tucked beneath her arm.“Lily, sweetheart…”She looked down. Then she looked back up at him.“Oh.”Jack pressed his lips together, trying not to laugh.“Is that the emergency?”“Yes.”“I'm glad we solved it.”Lily hurried toward him and wrapped her arms around his leg.“Good morning, Daddy.”He smiled and bent to kiss her forehead.“Good morning, princess.”“Where's Mommy?”“She's resting.”“Where are Sophia and Isabella?”“Sleeping.”Lily looked toward the living room.“Can I check?”“Of course. But remember, we look with our eyes and use gentle voices.”She nodded and hurried away.Jack watched her go, then looked down at the bottle in his hand.He was begin

  • Decisions I made    Three Little Girls and a Thousand Memories

The morning began with a scream. Not a cry from one of the twins. Not a call from Lily.A scream from Jack.“Lela!”She sat straight up in bed, her heart racing.“What? What's wrong?”Jack appeared in the doorway holding a tiny pink onesie in one hand and a lavender one in the other.“Which baby wears which?”Lela blinked. For a moment, she simply stared at him.“Are you serious?”“Yes.”She looked at the two outfits, then at his face.“Jack, they're both our daughters.”“I know that.”“They can wear either outfit.”He looked down at the clothes.“Oh.”Lela began laughing.Jack shook his head.“I'm trying to be organized.”“You're trying to assign clothing identities to newborns.”“It's important to know who is who.”“That's what their name bracelets are for.”He glanced toward the dresser.“Right.”She smiled and reached for him.“Come here.”He walked over and leaned down so she could kiss him.“Good morning.”“Good morning.”“Now, where are the girls?”“Your little pink one is awak

  • Decisions I made    A House Full of Little Things

The first thing Lela noticed was the silence. Not the peaceful kind of silence she'd imagined when she and Jack had talked about bringing the twins home. This was the kind that came after a long night, when the babies had finally settled, Lily was still asleep, and the entire house seemed to be holding its breath. She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. It was barely six in the morning. She had slept in pieces. An hour here, forty minutes there, and perhaps another stretch she couldn't quite remember. Every time one of the girls made a noise, she woke. Every time Jack got up, she opened her eyes to make sure he was okay. And every time the house went quiet, she found herself listening for the next sound.Motherhood had apparently turned her into a person who could hear a newborn breathe from three rooms away. She smiled to herself. Then she heard a soft voice.“Daddy?”Lela turned toward the doorway.Jack appeared with Sophia tucked securely against his chest. His hair was sticking up

  • Decisions I made    The First Morning

Lela woke to someone whispering. At first, she couldn't tell where she was. The room was dim, the curtains letting in only a thin line of morning sunlight, and her body felt as though it had been awake for days. Then she heard it again.“Come on, sweetheart. You can do this.”Jack.She turned her head toward the doorway and found him standing beside the bassinet, wearing the same T-shirt he'd worn the night before. His hair was a mess, his eyes were tired, and he held Isabella against his chest.Lela smiled faintly.“Are you giving her a pep talk?”Jack glanced over his shoulder. “Absolutely.”“Is it working?”“She's considering my argument.”Isabella made a tiny squeaking noise.“That's a no,” Lela whispered.“She's a tough negotiator.”He looked down at their daughter, gently supporting her head. Isabella's eyes were barely open, her little mouth moving as she settled against him. Jack brushed one finger along her back.“She woke up a little while ago,” he explained. “I changed her,

  • Decisions I made    Shopping

Friday morning arrived much earlier than I would have liked. My alarm went off at six, and for a few seconds I just lay there staring at the ceiling. The events of the night before slowly came back to me.Dinner with Mom and Dad.The interrogation. The shopping trip I had somehow been volunteered f

  • Decisions I made    Dinner with my parents

"Okay," Dad said as he leaned back in his chair. "Let's talk about this Jack guy."I groaned."Do we have to?""Absolutely."Mom laughed."We definitely have to."I shook my head."There's really not much to tell."Dad pointed at me."Start with what you know."I thought about it for a moment."Wel

  • Decisions I made    Thursday Night

Thursday nights were usually predictable. Chris would have another dinner meeting with clients, another networking event, or another reason he couldn't be home. Over the years, I had stopped asking questions. Sometimes the meetings were legitimate, sometimes they weren't, and sometimes I simply did

  • Decisions I made    The Start

Ten years ago, my husband and I started having problems in our marriage. At first, they were the kind of problems that many couples face—arguments about money, stress from everyday life, and disagreements about priorities. We kept telling ourselves that things would get better, that we were just go
