Chapter 2

Author: Miles Farrow
Shawn's POV

Despite feeling awful from the alcohol, I forced myself to stay up all night.

By morning, I'd finally finished turning the technique I'd used during the operations into a complete technical report.

It was the bomb disposal unit's biggest technical breakthrough of the year, and I was the only one who knew how to do it.

As long as I submitted the report, I'd be eligible for the Medal of Valor.

Receiving one was also my dad's greatest unfulfilled wish before he died in the line of duty. With the report in hand, I opened the door to Claire's office.

She skimmed through it and nodded in satisfaction. But the next second, she logged into the internal network, pulled up the digital copy, and typed Andy's name into the author field right in front of mine.

I braced myself against her desk, staring at her in disbelief. "What's the meaning of this? You're making Andy the first author?"

Claire didn't even bother looking up when she said, "Andy needs this report to pass his probation. You're a veteran of the squad. Trivial things like top billing shouldn't matter to you.

"Just treat it as something you two worked on together and give the newcomer a chance to shine. That way, no one can start running their mouths."

As her sheer audacity caught me off guard, my fingers started trembling uncontrollably. "You know exactly how much this report means to me."

I stared her down, my voice going hoarse. "I've risked my life countless times over the years just to fulfill my dad's dying wish. This one report is the last thing standing between me and that medal!"

Claire's face darkened instantly, clearly mad that I'd challenged her. "There'll be plenty of chances to earn commendations in the future. Do you really have to fight over this right now? Can't you think a little bigger?"

She let out a cold laugh before typing away at the keyboard. "Fine. If you can't even accept being the second author, then I'll leave your name off."

On the screen, the name "Shawn Howell" was deleted from the author field without a shred of hesitation, leaving only Andy's name behind.

Looking at her cold, indifferent face, I swallowed every word I'd been about to say. Claire didn't know that this really was my last chance.

Once I left for the northwestern border next month, there would be no more Shawn Howell in this world.

When she sensed that something was off with me, a look of hesitation crossed Claire's eyes.

She glanced at the tightly closed blinds around the office. After making sure no one was around, she sighed and walked over to me. She reached out, trying to hug me.

"Alright, I know this isn't fair to you. I'll make it up to you tonight by getting you your favorite jackfruit—"

All the emotions I'd been bottling up for years finally exploded as I cut her off, "Claire, I don't like jackfruit. You know perfectly well whose favorite it is."

As I spoke, my eyes locked onto her wrist. She was wearing a brand-new watch, the women's model of a matching pair.

Just half an hour ago, I'd seen the men's model on Andy's wrist during the morning briefing.

I stumbled back a step, my voice trembling. "Did Andy give you that?"

Claire instinctively pulled her hand back and awkwardly explained, "At the party last night, he gave it to me in front of everyone. If I hadn't worn it, imagine how embarrassed the poor rookie would've been."

"Embarrassed?"

I laughed out of sheer rage, my eyes stinging so badly it hurt.

Before my dad died, I took Claire to see him one last time.

With trembling hands, he took off the amulet he'd kept on him and placed it on Claire's palm. "This thing has walked through fire with me for half a lifetime. I'm entrusting it to you now. I hope you'll cherish it and, above all, I hope you cherish Shawn's feelings for you."

Back then, Claire solemnly accepted it right in front of my father. But the moment she left my house, she tossed the amulet into the back of a drawer.

No matter how much I pleaded with her, she always turned me down cold. "With this many people on the team, someone's bound to notice. If they recognize this as your father's, people will start gossiping. Shawn, for everyone's sake, we need to keep our distance."

In the end, I had no choice but to sew the amulet into the lining of her jacket, promising over and over that no one would ever see it. Only then did Claire relent.

It wasn't until Andy came along that I realized her idea of maintaining a distance depended entirely on who it was.

I stared at her, forcing every word out through clenched teeth. "When Andy gives you something, you're worried about embarrassing him. But when it's something my dad left for you, you treat it like trash. Did you ever stop to think how that makes me feel?"

Claire's face hardened, and her voice rose without her even realizing it. "What on earth is wrong with you today? I'm already exhausted from dealing with everything at work every day. Can't you just be a little more understanding for once?"

The moment she finished speaking, there was a sudden knock at the door. "Captain Weber, are you busy?"

The second she heard the executive officer's voice, she sprang away from me, almost as if she'd been electrocuted, putting distance between us.

"The report's authorship is final. Don't bring personal feelings into work. You can leave now."

She straightened her collar and switched right back to her no-nonsense work face. "I'm here. Come in."

Shawn's POVI'd assumed Claire had just said those things in the heat of the moment after being rejected. I never expected her to actually rent a small house near the base and settle there. She got her unruly long hair back under control and made a point of running every morning, desperately trying to get back into shape. She even picked up cooking again, bringing me meals in an insulated lunch box like clockwork, three times a day.As time went by, she became a familiar face around the base, and she grew bolder.Sometimes, when she ran into someone from the support staff she knew, she'd grab them and plead obsessively, "This is for my partner, Shawn. He works himself to the bone and always forgets to eat. Please take it to him and tell him I'll always be waiting for him."Her belated devotion didn't move me at all. If anything, I found it unbearable and downright sickening.I gave the security guards strict orders not to let her anywhere near the gate.Nothing she brought was

Shawn's POVThe next day, at the commendation ceremony, Marissa personally presented me with the Medal of Valor. Then she took half a step back and patted me on the shoulder, her eyes filled with pride."Congratulations. You earned this, fair and square. You finally got what you wanted."I lowered my head and gently touched the medal on my chest, my eyes growing warm. "Dad, I did it," I thought inwardly.I didn't get this because someone took pity on me, nor did I get it by making concessions. I earned it fair and square by putting my life on the line. What I never expected was that the news coverage of the ceremony would lead Claire straight to me.That morning, as I walked to the operations building, a disheveled figure suddenly rushed out from a corner and blocked my path. "Shawn!"After a year apart, Claire was nothing like the confident, sharp-looking woman she used to be. Her eyes were bloodshot. She looked gaunt, and her voice was hoarse and barely recognizable.Whe

Third-Person POVClaire froze for a moment, then bent down and picked up the object from the ground. It was a plain silver band. The ring was a little rough around the edges. It looked hand-polished.Engraved on the inside were the tiny letters C and S. Claire and Shawn…Claire stared at the ring in her hand, her blood seemingly turning to ice in an instant. She remembered now. For a while, Shawn had always had bandages wrapped around his fingers. When she'd asked, he'd only ever said he'd nicked them during training. So Shawn had been secretly preparing to propose all along. He had carefully tucked his love and hopes into the amulet he treasured most.If she had cherished that amulet even just a little, she would have discovered what he had been trying to tell her.Claire dropped to her knees before the rubble and shut her eyes tightly. She kept banging her head against the ground like she was punishing herself, blood pouring down her face.…After the explosion that shook

Third-Person POVAt the sight of Claire's bloody hands, Andy went white with fright and stepped forward to grab her arm."Captain Weber, your hands are bleeding. Doesn't it hurt? Please don't do this to yourself. If Shawn were still here, he'd never want to see you hurting yourself like this…"At the sound of his voice, Claire's body went rigid. She slowly turned around, her eyes locking onto the bomb suit Andy was wearing. If that suit had been on Shawn… If she hadn't played favorites and had assigned the bomb suits fairly… If she hadn't been so obsessed with keeping her distance….Turning her head away, Claire quietly said, "Go."Andy didn't catch what she said and moved closer, clearly trying to show how thoughtful and considerate he was. "Captain Weber, there are ambulances outside. Let me bandage your hands for you.""I said get lost!"Claire violently shook his hand off, her furious roar startling everyone."Don't touch me!"She pointed an accusatory finger at Andy, her

Two seconds later, she let out a heart-wrenching scream. "Shawn!"Claire scrambled to her feet and shoved aside the special operations officer putting up the cordon with all her strength. She rushed straight into the rubble, where debris was still raining down around her."Captain Weber, it's not safe! The building could collapse again at any moment. You can't go in there!"Two officers reacted quickly, grabbing her tightly around the waist and desperately trying to drag her back out."Let go of me! All of you, get the hell off me!"Claire's eyes were bloodshot as she swung her fist at the officers restraining her, hitting them with astonishing force. After finally wrenching herself free, she stum

Shawn's POV"We've got an emergency! Two bombs have been found at Magorit Mall downtown! Everyone, get to the assembly point immediately!"Without sparing Claire another glance, I sprinted for the equipment room. As I suited up, I caught Andy in my peripheral vision, pulling on that brand-new top-of-the-line suit. Not only was it lightweight, but it was also lined with the best shock-absorbing material money could buy.The old model I was wearing was heavy, suffocating, and the comms in the helmet crackled with static every now and then.I looked away, picked up my toolkit in silence, and was the first one in the bomb disposal truck. The floor plan sent over by the command center showed two bombs in total. One was highly complex and strapped to a load-bearing pillar in the main atrium. The other bomb was a simple device, located in the open area of the underground parking lot.Claire studied the plan and issued her orders without the slightest hesitation. "Andy, I'll go with you
