Chapter 3

Author: Miles Farrow
Shawn's POV

Martin Steele, the executive officer, opened the door and walked in.

"Captain Weber, headquarters just issued us one of the new top-of-the-line bomb suits. There's only one unit. How do you want to assign it?"

Claire glanced at me instinctively, her lips parting slightly. I spoke before she could, and both our voices rang out in the office at the same time. "Give it to Andy."

Martin was left dumbfounded, while a painfully awkward look crossed Claire's face. She cleared her throat and quickly tried to explain, "Right. Andy's the rookie. His conditioning and his nerves aren't up to par yet. Better equipment could save his life."

Martin hesitated. "But Shawn handles most of the dangerous missions. You—"

Claire cut him off before he could finish. "It's fine. Shawn's a veteran. He can handle the pressure, and he'll manage with his old one."

Martin said nothing more, simply nodding before leaving. As soon as the door shut, the tension in the office shot through the roof.

Claire pressed her lips together and looked at me, seemingly wanting to say something to smooth things over.

I gave a bitter, self-mocking smile. "No need to explain. I get it. Give the good gear to the rookie so everyone can see how selfless our captain is. We have to keep our distance, right?"

Claire's brows knitted together. She strode over, put an arm around my shoulders, and spoke in a soft voice.

"Shawn, you've just been run ragged lately. The stress is getting to you. Tell you what—I'll cancel everything else this afternoon and personally go with you to your routine psychological debriefing. You need to relax."

Bomb disposal officers were under extreme pressure for long periods, so psychological debriefing after every major operation was standard procedure.

That afternoon, I changed into loose, comfortable clothes and headed to the debriefing room alone. As soon as I reached the door, I heard Andy let out an exaggerated sigh from inside.

"Captain Weber, the amulet sewn into your jacket is just so unique. Every time I close my eyes lately, all I see is the bomb countdown. I have nightmares every night. Could you give it to me to help me calm my nerves?"

I instinctively held my breath, waiting for Claire's answer. The next second, the sound of scissors snipping came through the door.

"Take it. And if the nightmares come back, call me. No matter how late it is, I'll pick up."

I suddenly remembered our very first mission together. After barely making it out alive, I held her tight, still shaken by how close we'd come to death, and I couldn't calm down for the longest time.

Back then, Claire had pushed me away without hesitation. "What are you doing, hugging me like that? What if someone sees us? Shawn, you're too fragile."

I took a shaky breath before opening the door. Andy was fiddling with the amulet my dad had left behind.

Seeing my expression, Claire instinctively stepped to the side and shielded Andy behind her. "Shawn, why didn't you knock before coming in?"

The way she immediately went to protect Andy cut deep, and my vision was starting to blur. "Claire, that's the last thing my father ever left me! What gives you the right to hand it to him?"

Seeing me lose control, Claire stepped forward and hissed in a low voice, "Have you lost your mind?! It's just an amulet! I'll go out and get you a bunch of them later if that's what you want! Don't make a scene! Do you want the whole squad to come running over and find out about us?"

The injury on my wrist throbbed painfully as she gripped it, but even that pain was nothing compared to the agony in my heart.

Seeing her look at me with such anger was the final straw.

I slowly pried her fingers away from me and spoke calmly. "Claire, from now on, I don't want anything from you. I just want my dad's amulet back."

Claire froze at the lifeless look in my eyes. The next second, the highest-level alarm began to blare through the corridor.

Shawn's POVI'd assumed Claire had just said those things in the heat of the moment after being rejected. I never expected her to actually rent a small house near the base and settle there. She got her unruly long hair back under control and made a point of running every morning, desperately trying to get back into shape. She even picked up cooking again, bringing me meals in an insulated lunch box like clockwork, three times a day.As time went by, she became a familiar face around the base, and she grew bolder.Sometimes, when she ran into someone from the support staff she knew, she'd grab them and plead obsessively, "This is for my partner, Shawn. He works himself to the bone and always forgets to eat. Please take it to him and tell him I'll always be waiting for him."Her belated devotion didn't move me at all. If anything, I found it unbearable and downright sickening.I gave the security guards strict orders not to let her anywhere near the gate.Nothing she brought was

Shawn's POVThe next day, at the commendation ceremony, Marissa personally presented me with the Medal of Valor. Then she took half a step back and patted me on the shoulder, her eyes filled with pride."Congratulations. You earned this, fair and square. You finally got what you wanted."I lowered my head and gently touched the medal on my chest, my eyes growing warm. "Dad, I did it," I thought inwardly.I didn't get this because someone took pity on me, nor did I get it by making concessions. I earned it fair and square by putting my life on the line. What I never expected was that the news coverage of the ceremony would lead Claire straight to me.That morning, as I walked to the operations building, a disheveled figure suddenly rushed out from a corner and blocked my path. "Shawn!"After a year apart, Claire was nothing like the confident, sharp-looking woman she used to be. Her eyes were bloodshot. She looked gaunt, and her voice was hoarse and barely recognizable.Whe

Third-Person POVClaire froze for a moment, then bent down and picked up the object from the ground. It was a plain silver band. The ring was a little rough around the edges. It looked hand-polished.Engraved on the inside were the tiny letters C and S. Claire and Shawn…Claire stared at the ring in her hand, her blood seemingly turning to ice in an instant. She remembered now. For a while, Shawn had always had bandages wrapped around his fingers. When she'd asked, he'd only ever said he'd nicked them during training. So Shawn had been secretly preparing to propose all along. He had carefully tucked his love and hopes into the amulet he treasured most.If she had cherished that amulet even just a little, she would have discovered what he had been trying to tell her.Claire dropped to her knees before the rubble and shut her eyes tightly. She kept banging her head against the ground like she was punishing herself, blood pouring down her face.…After the explosion that shook

Third-Person POVAt the sight of Claire's bloody hands, Andy went white with fright and stepped forward to grab her arm."Captain Weber, your hands are bleeding. Doesn't it hurt? Please don't do this to yourself. If Shawn were still here, he'd never want to see you hurting yourself like this…"At the sound of his voice, Claire's body went rigid. She slowly turned around, her eyes locking onto the bomb suit Andy was wearing. If that suit had been on Shawn… If she hadn't played favorites and had assigned the bomb suits fairly… If she hadn't been so obsessed with keeping her distance….Turning her head away, Claire quietly said, "Go."Andy didn't catch what she said and moved closer, clearly trying to show how thoughtful and considerate he was. "Captain Weber, there are ambulances outside. Let me bandage your hands for you.""I said get lost!"Claire violently shook his hand off, her furious roar startling everyone."Don't touch me!"She pointed an accusatory finger at Andy, her

Third-Person POVUnder the sheer force of the blast, the mall, which stood more than a dozen stories tall, came crashing down.Thick smoke and clouds of dust billowed through the air.Claire stood frozen, staring at the scene, her mind completely blank.Shawn… He was still in there. Two seconds later, she let out a heart-wrenching scream. "Shawn!"Claire scrambled to her feet and shoved aside the special operations officer putting up the cordon with all her strength. She rushed straight into the rubble, where debris was still raining down around her."Captain Weber, it's not safe! The building could collapse again at any moment. You can't go in there!"Two officers reacted quickly, grabbing her tightly around the waist and desperately trying to drag her back out."Let go of me! All of you, get the hell off me!"Claire's eyes were bloodshot as she swung her fist at the officers restraining her, hitting them with astonishing force. After finally wrenching herself free, she stum

Shawn's POV"We've got an emergency! Two bombs have been found at Magorit Mall downtown! Everyone, get to the assembly point immediately!"Without sparing Claire another glance, I sprinted for the equipment room. As I suited up, I caught Andy in my peripheral vision, pulling on that brand-new top-of-the-line suit. Not only was it lightweight, but it was also lined with the best shock-absorbing material money could buy.The old model I was wearing was heavy, suffocating, and the comms in the helmet crackled with static every now and then.I looked away, picked up my toolkit in silence, and was the first one in the bomb disposal truck. The floor plan sent over by the command center showed two bombs in total. One was highly complex and strapped to a load-bearing pillar in the main atrium. The other bomb was a simple device, located in the open area of the underground parking lot.Claire studied the plan and issued her orders without the slightest hesitation. "Andy, I'll go with you
