Chapter 4

Author: Miles Farrow
Shawn's POV

"We've got an emergency! Two bombs have been found at Magorit Mall downtown! Everyone, get to the assembly point immediately!"

Without sparing Claire another glance, I sprinted for the equipment room. As I suited up, I caught Andy in my peripheral vision, pulling on that brand-new top-of-the-line suit.

Not only was it lightweight, but it was also lined with the best shock-absorbing material money could buy.

The old model I was wearing was heavy, suffocating, and the comms in the helmet crackled with static every now and then.

I looked away, picked up my toolkit in silence, and was the first one in the bomb disposal truck. The floor plan sent over by the command center showed two bombs in total.

One was highly complex and strapped to a load-bearing pillar in the main atrium. The other bomb was a simple device, located in the open area of the underground parking lot.

Claire studied the plan and issued her orders without the slightest hesitation. "Andy, I'll go with you to the parking lot. Pull this off, and I'll personally push for an early promotion for you.

"Shawn, you take the atrium. The civilians have already been evacuated."

The special operations team leader beside her couldn't help frowning when he heard that. "Captain Weber, the bomb in the atrium is extremely complicated. Shouldn't we send both of them to work on it together?"

"No," Claire said firmly. "Shawn is experienced. I trust him to handle the atrium. Andy needs to get some practical experience, and the one in the parking lot should be manageable for him."

As I listened to her self-righteous explanation, I put my helmet on without showing a hint of emotion.

The bomb was strapped to a load-bearing pillar in the middle of the atrium, with a tangled web of wires crisscrossing everywhere. One wrong move and it would detonate instantly.

I held my breath and carefully began inspecting it.

Sweat trickled into my eyes, but I couldn't spare a hand to wipe it away. Finally, I figured out the order in which the wires had to be cut.

Just as I was about to make the first cut, Andy's scream tore through the comms. "Captain Weber, I-I think I cut the wrong wire!"

At that exact moment, the bomb in front of me let out a piercing beep. The two devices were linked by an anti-tamper trigger, and the countdown suddenly dropped to the final three minutes.

Three minutes was nowhere near enough to defuse something this complex.

"Andy, what did you do?" the special operations team leader snarled at him.

"I don't know. My hand just slipped. Captain, I'm scared. My legs gave out, and I can't stand. Please help me…"

Claire said in a low, steady voice, "Andy, don't panic. Keep your suit sealed. I'm getting you out of there!"

At that moment, my entire world went silent. All I could hear was the ticking of the bomb.

I desperately tried to get out, but a falling steel beam knocked me to the ground.

I said through clenched teeth, "Claire, I'm down. This old bomb suit is too heavy, and with my injured wrist, I can't get myself back up…"

Claire's impatient voice came through the comms. "Shawn, now is not the time for jealousy. Andy is genuinely too terrified to even walk. You're a hardened veteran. Why are you acting so helpless now?"

She then switched to a private comms channel and spoke softly, trying to reassure me. "Once I get him out, I'll come straight back for you! We promised we'd face life and death together. Just hang on until I get back!"

Face life and death together?

Hearing those words come from her mouth was almost laughable.

"Don't bother coming back, Claire."

I spoke those final words with an unsettling calm before shutting off the comms and tracking system on my helmet.

When the countdown hit zero, a deafening explosion rang out through the mall.

Outside the cordon, Claire was doing everything she could to drag Andy to safety. The instant the blast reached her ears, she whipped around, all the color draining from her face. "Shawn!"

Shawn's POVI'd assumed Claire had just said those things in the heat of the moment after being rejected. I never expected her to actually rent a small house near the base and settle there. She got her unruly long hair back under control and made a point of running every morning, desperately trying to get back into shape. She even picked up cooking again, bringing me meals in an insulated lunch box like clockwork, three times a day.As time went by, she became a familiar face around the base, and she grew bolder.Sometimes, when she ran into someone from the support staff she knew, she'd grab them and plead obsessively, "This is for my partner, Shawn. He works himself to the bone and always forgets to eat. Please take it to him and tell him I'll always be waiting for him."Her belated devotion didn't move me at all. If anything, I found it unbearable and downright sickening.I gave the security guards strict orders not to let her anywhere near the gate.Nothing she brought was

Shawn's POVThe next day, at the commendation ceremony, Marissa personally presented me with the Medal of Valor. Then she took half a step back and patted me on the shoulder, her eyes filled with pride."Congratulations. You earned this, fair and square. You finally got what you wanted."I lowered my head and gently touched the medal on my chest, my eyes growing warm. "Dad, I did it," I thought inwardly.I didn't get this because someone took pity on me, nor did I get it by making concessions. I earned it fair and square by putting my life on the line. What I never expected was that the news coverage of the ceremony would lead Claire straight to me.That morning, as I walked to the operations building, a disheveled figure suddenly rushed out from a corner and blocked my path. "Shawn!"After a year apart, Claire was nothing like the confident, sharp-looking woman she used to be. Her eyes were bloodshot. She looked gaunt, and her voice was hoarse and barely recognizable.Whe

Third-Person POVClaire froze for a moment, then bent down and picked up the object from the ground. It was a plain silver band. The ring was a little rough around the edges. It looked hand-polished.Engraved on the inside were the tiny letters C and S. Claire and Shawn…Claire stared at the ring in her hand, her blood seemingly turning to ice in an instant. She remembered now. For a while, Shawn had always had bandages wrapped around his fingers. When she'd asked, he'd only ever said he'd nicked them during training. So Shawn had been secretly preparing to propose all along. He had carefully tucked his love and hopes into the amulet he treasured most.If she had cherished that amulet even just a little, she would have discovered what he had been trying to tell her.Claire dropped to her knees before the rubble and shut her eyes tightly. She kept banging her head against the ground like she was punishing herself, blood pouring down her face.…After the explosion that shook

Third-Person POVAt the sight of Claire's bloody hands, Andy went white with fright and stepped forward to grab her arm."Captain Weber, your hands are bleeding. Doesn't it hurt? Please don't do this to yourself. If Shawn were still here, he'd never want to see you hurting yourself like this…"At the sound of his voice, Claire's body went rigid. She slowly turned around, her eyes locking onto the bomb suit Andy was wearing. If that suit had been on Shawn… If she hadn't played favorites and had assigned the bomb suits fairly… If she hadn't been so obsessed with keeping her distance….Turning her head away, Claire quietly said, "Go."Andy didn't catch what she said and moved closer, clearly trying to show how thoughtful and considerate he was. "Captain Weber, there are ambulances outside. Let me bandage your hands for you.""I said get lost!"Claire violently shook his hand off, her furious roar startling everyone."Don't touch me!"She pointed an accusatory finger at Andy, her

Two seconds later, she let out a heart-wrenching scream. "Shawn!"Claire scrambled to her feet and shoved aside the special operations officer putting up the cordon with all her strength. She rushed straight into the rubble, where debris was still raining down around her."Captain Weber, it's not safe! The building could collapse again at any moment. You can't go in there!"Two officers reacted quickly, grabbing her tightly around the waist and desperately trying to drag her back out."Let go of me! All of you, get the hell off me!"Claire's eyes were bloodshot as she swung her fist at the officers restraining her, hitting them with astonishing force. After finally wrenching herself free, she stum
